SUMMARY:I Am An American Live
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Asian American Month\, The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts\, in collaboration with The Immigrant Story\, proudly presents I Am An American Live: Stories of Exclusion and Belonging. This powerful evening honoring identity\, resilience\, and community is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition in honor of Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Join us on Saturday\, May 16\, 2026\, for a production that promises to inspire\, connect\, and stay with you long after the curtain falls. \nAs Oregon—and the nation—approach the 250th anniversary of American independence\, The Immigrant Story brings four powerful\, deeply personal journeys from Vietnam\, China\, the Philippines\, and Burma. Some crossed oceans; others arrived as children\, clinging to their parents\, unaware of what awaited them. On this night\, they step into the spotlight to reflect\, to reckon\, and to share their truths—inviting us to listen deeply\, find common ground\, and remember that our shared humanity is stronger than our differences. \nThe evening culminates in a world premiere performance by Talilo Marfil\, 2026 Fields Artist Fellow. Created exclusively for I Am An American Live\, this original musical set traces Talilo’s own arduous journey—shaped by the streets of Portland—and the path that led him to become a powerful force uplifting and mentoring the city’s youth. \nNow in its fifth year\, this acclaimed live production brings the voices of Asian Americans to the stage in a dynamic fusion of storytelling\, music\, and performance. The result is an evening that moves the heart\, challenges assumptions\, and reminds us who we are—together. \nThis free performance is made possible through the generous support of Anne Naito-Campbell. Additional programming support is provided by the Ronald W. Naito\, MD Foundation and a grant from the Richard B. Siegel Foundation. \nBefore and after the performance\, we are delighted to welcome a select group of artists and nonprofit partners who will be sharing their work with our audience in the lobby. Joining us will be Elizabeth Mehren\, award-winning author of I Lived to Tell the World; Talilo Marfil\, this year’s Fields Fellow and featured artist; and Kim Stafford\, author and Oregon Poet Laureate. \n  \nJoin Us for a Special Pre-Event Happy Hour! \nCome early and celebrate our stories with drinks and great company. Join us at 6:00 PM in The Reser lobby for a delightful pre-event Happy Hour. Drinks and light snacks will be available for purchase. \nMeet Elizabeth Mehren\, author of I Lived to Tell the World—purchase a copy of her award-winning book and have it signed. \nConnect with our partner nonprofits sharing stories and resources about the immigrant experience. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to mingle\, learn\, and celebrate together before the main event begins. \nThe auditorium opens at 6:30 PM. \nContent Advisory:\nSome stories shared during this event include references to trauma\, drug use\, and self-harm. We encourage guests to take care while listening and to engage with the material in whatever way feels most comfortable for you. \nSeating for this performance is General Admssion. Pay what you like – $0-$25.00

SUMMARY:National Geographic Live: The Untold Story of Sharks
DESCRIPTION:Sharks have roamed the planet’s waters since before the dinosaurs\, but only recently have we begun to understand the lives of these powerful predators in the ocean. Fifty years after Jaws shocked audiences in theaters\, we open the National Geographic archives to reveal the true story of 20th-century women leading shark science and dive into cutting-edge conservation work of shark researcher and National Geographic Explorer Jess Cramp. Swim alongside her under the vibrant waters of the South Pacific to find out what it truly means to save sharks. \nDr. Jess Cramp is a shark researcher who specializes in conservation policy and engaging communities in the management of their ocean. Jess co-championed a grassroots campaign that resulted in the Cook Islands Shark Sanctuary in 2012\, an area exceeding 770\,000 square miles. She is the founder and executive director of Sharks Pacific\, a non-profit organization that conducts research\, outreach\, and advocacy throughout the Pacific Islands region. \nSponsored by U.S. Bank

SUMMARY:National Geographic Live: Wild Cats Revealed with Sandesh Kadur
DESCRIPTION:National Geographic Live brings you behind-the-scenes stories and unforgettable imagery from world-renowned photographers\, scientists\, filmmakers\, and adventurers—live on stage. \nFilmmaker and National Geographic Fellow Sandesh Kadur first encountered a wild cat in his native India as a teenager—after sitting in a tree for hours under a full moon\, a leopard walked directly under him. SUMMARY:Ari Shapiro: Thank You For Listening
DESCRIPTION:One of the most recognized and beloved American storytellers\, Ari Shapiro (NPR\, Pink Martini) returns to the stage with a new cabaret solo show. Hilarious\, moving\, and uplifting\, Thank You For Listening adapts tales from Shapiro’s best-selling memoir The Best Strangers in the World into an evening of stories and songs about the power of listening to bridge divides. \n“I’ve used the phrase Thank you for listening to mean so many things\,” Ari says\, “It’s versatile\, sort of like Shalom\, Aloha\, or Bless Your Heart.” In this show with music direction by Henry Koperski\, Ari shares behind-the-scenes stories of flying on Air Force One and reporting from war zones\, imparts lessons he learned from his fortune teller grandmother\, and recites selected excerpts from his treasured collection of hate mail – all in an exploration of the profound difference that merely listening to one another can have on the world. With songs from Billy Joel\, Paul Simon\, Taylor Swift\, Stephen Sondheim and Rufus Wainwright among many others\, audiences will leave Thank You For Listening feeling more hopeful about the world around them…and may never listen to All Things Considered in quite the same way again. \nAri Shapiro is the award-winning co-host of All Things Considered\, NPR’s landmark nightly news program. Bush administration. Some of his awards include the Silver Gavel\, an Edward R. Murrow Award\, and the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize. \nShapiro is also a frequent guest singer with the “little orchestra” Pink Martini\, from his hometown of Portland\, Oregon. He has recorded on four of the band’s albums\, singing in English\, Hebrew\, Ladino\, Spanish\, Arabic and Armenian. Since his 2009 debut with the band at the Hollywood Bowl\, he has performed in many of the world’s most storied venues\, including The Royal Albert Hall in London\, L’Olympia in Paris\, and Carnegie Hall in New York. He has shared a stage with both Chita and Rita (Rivera and Moreno)\, among other artists. In 2019\, he collaborated with Alan Cumming to create Och and Oy: A Considered Cabaret\, and they continue to tour together. At the Kennedy Center\, he has performed as a guest singer in Taylor Mac’s Holiday Sauce; as a soloist with The Washington Chorus in Igor Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex; and as a featured singer in the Washington Ballet’s original production of The Sun Also Risess.
