SUMMARY:BLACK MATTER Closing Celebration
DESCRIPTION:BLACK MATTER Closing Celebration & Social Practice Performance Featuring Master Artist Michael Bernard Stevenson Jr. \nFirst Friday\, November 7\, 2025 | 6:00 – 9:00 pm (performance at 6:30) | Art Gallery \nFree and open to the public \nIf you’ve been inspired by the work you’ve seen in the exhibition\, join us in sending it off with some love by meeting the artists at our closing celebration and participating in a unique performance. Master Artist Michael Bernard Stevenson Jr. Stevenson activates the Urban Shaman—an imagined and embodied ancestral self—in direct with capitalism’s totem: the Charging Bull on Wall Street. Through ritualized struggle\, Stevenson exposes the friction between creative agency and economic oppression. This performative act of resistance becomes both a reclamation of denied heritage and a challenge to systemic commodification. SUMMARY:Liberace and Liza: The Cedar Hills Have Eyes (A Tribute)
DESCRIPTION:For the first time ever\, David Saffert and Jillian Snow bring their eerily accurate portrayals of Liberace and Liza Minnelli to The Reser—just in time for Halloween\, because nothing says “spooky” quite like sequins\, jazz hands\, and unresolved mother issues. \nIn a show nobody asked for (but everyone will be glad exists)\, these two musical creeps channel the spirits of showbiz legends who famously never performed together—possibly for reasons of cosmic self-preservation. \nExpect piano pyrotechnics\, vocals with zero regard for restraint\, and costume changes that may induce mild motion sickness. It’s cabaret meets séance\, and yes\, we’re hoping for a fog machine. We love fog machines. \nCome for the nostalgia. Stay for the sheer audacity. \nThis Halloween\, Liberace and Liza take The Reser by storm in “Liberace & Liza: The Cedar Hills Have Eyes (A Tribute).” \nWe lock the doors. You’ve been warned. \nSponsored by The Reser Family Foundation \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRjIA6DgbDI

SUMMARY:First Friday Art Walk & The Giving Tree Was Black Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join The Reser for an engaging and participatory performance during First Friday. Featuring the sculptural and performative works of Sadé DuBoise\, guests will enjoy sharing the story of The Giving Tree Was Black. Reimagining a familiar story through the lens of Black motherhood and generational endurance\, Sadé DuBoise stands in silence\, her body becoming a living form—rooted and adorned with paper charms\, seed pouches\, and crochet fragments. Viewers of all ages are invited to approach and gently remove these offerings from her form. Expanding DuBoise’s self-portraiture into a ritual of reclamation and reciprocity\, centering the labor of Black women who have long been asked to give everything. Here\, the tree gives—but on her own terms. \nEach seed pouch contains wildflower seeds and instructions to scatter in barren places\, extending this moment of care into the world beyond the Gallery. Alongside the performance\, a branch shelf with a wooden bowl remains as a space for continued interaction. Individuals are invited to write reflections—on grief\, growth\, or personal offerings—and place them in the bowl\, completing a quiet cycle of exchange. \nFirst Friday October 3\, 2025 | 6:00 – 9:00 pm (performance at 6:45) | Art Gallery\nFree and open to the public\, no ticket required. \nLearn more about Black Matter. \nPhoto Credit: Sadé Duboise

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Demo: Helen Liu
DESCRIPTION:Helen Liu (she/her) will speak about her large new works on paper in Chinese ink and homegrown indigo. She will also talk about the growing and harvesting of Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) and the pigment extraction process. Attendees will get to enjoy seeds that Liu will share with gardeners interested in growing their own indigo! \nFREE & Open to the public with a reserved ticket. This event takes place in The Lab. \nLearn more about Infinite Possibilities. \nImage: detail of Deconstructed Calligraphy by Helen Liu \nHelen Liu Bio: \nHelen Liu (she/her) was born in Taiwan and raised on a chicken farm in the southern part of the island. Since leaving the country in the early 70’s with her parents\, she lived in Jakarta and Bangkok and eventually came to study at the University of Oregon. After receiving her BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in painting and graphic design\, Helen worked in advertising firms in Portland and Eugene. Later\, after her daughter was born\, she worked from home and began to explore her own art. \nOver time\, Helen Hui-Ling Liu\, the immigrant from Taiwan\, became a naturalized citizen of the United States\, a world citizen\, a gardener\, and a strong advocate for composting. She grew increasingly concerned about the state the environment. In 2014 American Luminosity was the first large-scale work using her own household plastic waste and non-recyclable bags from local coSee shops. Several large works followed with the biggest one measuring 40ft x 12ft. Plastic Waste to Art Quilt (2021) was funded in part by the Springfield Arts Commission and displayed at the Academy of Arts and Academics in downtown Springfield during Earth Day week. \nTrips to Japan in 2019-2020 opened Helen’s eyes to natural indigo and the long Japanese tradition of working with this blue dye. Beginning in 2021\, she started growing Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria)\, learning how to harvest and extract the pigment. She feels humbled by this magical plant and the ancient peoples around the world who worked with it\, weaving and making textiles that survived the millennia. Helen’s art practice was changed by Persicaria tinctoria and the wondrous color that it yields. Today\, she continues to grow this beautiful ancient plant\, producing a wondrous blue pigment that she uses in her art.

She has a bachelor’s in architecture degree from Mumbai\, India and a master’s in urban design degree from Pratt Institute\, New York. She has been working as an Artist since 2018 and has sold and shipped hundreds of artworks worldwide. Raised in India\, Menka has strong ties to her culture which she tries to showcase in her works. She primarily works with alcohol inks\, gouache and embroidery on handmade paper. She also makes her own custom float frame and fine art prints in her home studio. \nIn May 2022\, she was a part of a group show in Alberta Street Gallery highlighting the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. In April 2023\, she had her first solo show at Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland\, Oregon where she exhibited 9 botanical mixed media works. The theme was to document the spring lowers that were blooming in the garden at the moment\, and she made small maps to go with each painting to make the exhibit more interactive. In Fall 2023\, two of her artworks were selected to be a part of City of Portland’s ‘Visual Chronicle of Portland’ Collection. \nShe loves a good composition in everything – whether in paper\, in spaces or in imagination and she tries to encase that in her very colorful depictions of birds\, plants\, sea life\, and landscapes. \n  \nSandra Honda Bio: \nSandra Honda (she/her) is a Japanese American visual artist and writer based on Kalapuyan land now known as Eugene\, Oregon. She works to elevate less heard voices and stories by invoking historical\, contemporary and social narratives. In 2018\, she left her career as a speechwriter and scientist to redirect her focus toward using art and writing to interrogate what it means to be Asian and American in today’s America. Informed by the Japanese American experience of ethnically-based mass incarceration during World War II\, her drawings\, paintings\, digital works\, assemblages\, and installations draw a historical throughline of anti-Asian activities in the U.S. from the 1800s to today. In 2022\, she initiated a social practice focused on climate change in which she broadened her toolkit to include sculpture. This climate change-related work draws on her career addressing climate\, ocean and science policy through her speechwriting work. \nShe often collaborates with Taiwanese composer and sound designer Mei-ling Lee to create interactive installations enriched by sound and lighting environments. Since moving to Eugene in 2018\, Honda has exhibited (selected) in the Mayor’s Art Show (Eugene\, 2020)\, Arts Northwest Biennial (Roseburg\, 2021)\, Eugene’s Windowfront Exhibition (2022)\, Maude Kerns Art Center (Eugene\, 2022)\, The Reser Center for the Arts (Beaverton\, 2022)\, the University of Oregon Adele McMillan Gallery (EMU\, 2023) and Walters Cultural Arts Center (Hillsboro\, 2023). She is a recipient of grants from the Oregon Arts Commission (2022) and Lane County Cultural Commission (2024). She was the first artist selected for two consecutive years of residency at Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts and Agriculture (2022\, 2023). \nHonda was born and raised in Chicago\, Illinois\, where her family relocated after their incarceration in America’s concentration camps (Pinedale\, Tule Lake\, and Minidoka) during World War II.
