They have performed throughout Oregon to promote Mexican culture and keep traditions alive by passing them down to the next generation. This 1-hour 15\, minute performance showcases dancers of all ages and levels sharing their love and passion for Mexican culture.

DESCRIPTION:Since 1999\, Taiwanese American Heritage Week\, as designated by the U.S. Congress has been celebrated nationwide during the month of May to recognize and honor the cultures\, traditions\, contributions\, and achievements of Taiwanese Americans in the United States. \nThis year\, the Taiwanese Association of Greater Portland is excited to have “Taiwan Acrobatic Troupe” perform “Taiwan Reminiscence”. \nInspired by the creative and diverse ethnic culture of Taiwan\, the performance fuses traditional acrobatics with dance\, drama\, and folk arts\, and incorporates Mandarin\, Taiwanese\, Hakka\, and Indigenous music as well as Taiwan’s diverse cultural and natural scenes\, to present the audience with the unique faces of Taiwan seen in journeys away from home\, nostalgic cities\, and energetic festivals. The program consists of two parts with a total length of 80 minutes. \nThe first part\, “Reminiscence\,” features “Away from Home\,” “Cross the Ocean\,” “Prosperous City\,” “Stars Know My Heart\,” and “Myriads of Lights\,” to display Taiwan’s cultural diversity through performances depicting Taiwanese ancestors’ spirit of diligence\, perseverance\, and the cultural diversity of different ethnic groups in Taiwan. \nThe second part\, “Charm of Taiwan\,” features “Temple Fair\,” “Bombarding Lord Handan\,” “Turning the Universe\,” and “Vibrant Energy\,” to convey Taiwan’s religious belief and vitality with Taiwanese temple fairs and families’ prayers.

DESCRIPTION:The Heart of Afghanistan project consists of Four Afghan musicians; Ahmad Fanoos on Vocals & Harmonium\, and his two sons Elham on Piano and Mehran on Violin\, with Hamid Habibzada on tabla. Together they will tell the story of Afghanistan from its pre-islamic Buddhist heritage through traditional Ghazals based on the Sufi inspired poetry of Rumi and the ‘Afghan Elvis’\, pop icon Ahmad Zahir\, of the 60s and 70s who took the music of Elvis Presley and translated it into Dari and performed it with a traditional instrument ensemble. The project blurs genres and geographies\, arriving at a transnational sound that grooves as hard as it pushes against boundaries. At the age of four she started violin lessons with Prof. Galina Turchaninova\, and in the following year\, she enrolled in the piano studio of Prof. Tatiana Zelikman. From 2011 to 2021 Michelle continued studying with both of her teachers at the two most famous Moscow music schools: the Gnessin State Musical College – piano\, and the Central Music School by the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Several days before her 6th birthday she made her solo debut performance as both violinist and pianist with the Belarusian State Chamber Orchestra in Minsk. \nMichelle has performed with orchestras in Moscow\, Minsk\, Saratov\, Yaroslavl\, Istanbul\, and Ankara (Turkey); has appeared in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory\, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow\, Pushkin Museum’s Museyon Hall in Moscow\, Palais de Beaux-Arts in Brussels\, Svetlanov’s Hall of the Moscow International House of Music\, NCPA (Mumbai\, India)\, Wiener Konzerthaus\, Severance Hall (Cleveland\, USA); and many others. \nShe is a laureate of the “Goldene Note” audition in Vienna\, the Manhattan International Competition\, the Berlin International Competition\, and the Chicago International Violin Competition. DESCRIPTION:¡Viva el amor! is a rich and vibrant tapestry of choral music from Peru\, Venezuela\, Cuba\, Argentina\, México\, and the United States\, presented by ISing Choir under the direction of Stephen Galván. ISing will provide a veritable feast for the senses with this concert\, which features a collection of Hispanic love songs as well as sacred music based on folk rhythms and melodies native to these countries. “Hanacpachap\,” a processional hymn to the Virgin Mary in the Quechua language\, was composed by an Inca student of Franciscan priest Juan Pérez de Bocanegra between 1620 and 1631\, and is the earliest work of vocal polyphony printed in the New World. “Misa Criolla” by Argentinian composer Ariel Ramírez is an invitation of love encompassing pieces traditionally sung in the Roman Catholic mass. The multicultural folk ensemble Grupo Condor will accompany the choir on both these works. Audiences will be sure to remember “Oblivion”\, based on the tango music of Astor Piazzolla\, long after leaving the concert hall\, along with the smooth and sensuous melodies of compositions such as “Al Tribunal De Tu Pecho” by Carlos Guastavino and Z. Randall Stroope’s “Amor De Mi Alma”. \nIn keeping with ISing’s mission\, the choir will be accepting separate donations (cash\, check or credit card) to support this season’s beneficiary\, Mariachi Una Voz\, a Mariachi band composed of middle and high school students. Mariachi is a beautiful art form from México\, and this program provides an opportunity for the audience to explore and enjoy part of México’s rich culture.

DESCRIPTION:Oregon’s acclaimed and beloved genre-defying chamber ensemble is traversing through time in its upcoming performance: 90s v. 90s. In this newest installment\, Portland Cello Project explores and showcases both well- and lesser-known works from the 1790s\, 1890s\, and especially the 1990s. This night won’t just smell like teen spirit; the performance will feature Beethoven and other classical and romantic heavyweights\, seamlessly crossing over to everything from Jane’s Addiction to No Doubt.  \nPatti King of The Shins joins the group as a guest vocalist for a night of musical homage that transcends the ages. Always innovative and bringing the unexpected\, PCP will usher you through time in a friendly competition of eras and soundscapes doing what they do so well: reimagining what makes all music special. Bring your best flannel (or waistcoat) and see which period wins — no matter what happens\, it will be a ton of fun. \n—- \nIn the fall of 2006\, a group of 9 cellists got on stage at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge to perform western classical music in an informal setting. \nMany of the cellists that night thought it would only happen once. \nBut slowly that one-off event became a second\, and a third\, cellists joined and left and rejoined the group again\, to perform in Portland’s most popular clubs. By 2009 the group had evolved into a nationally-recognized performing\, recording\, and educational group with a revolving cast of cellists. Cello Project (or PCP as their fans affectionately call them) were quickly appearing anywhere and everywhere in North America\, from punk rock clubs to symphony halls\, from street parties to exclusive private events. By 2010 self-described horde of cellos were spending more than a quarter of the year touring\, featuring a diverse repertoire that quickly ballooned to over 1\,000 pieces of music. \nUnder the artistic direction of Douglas Jenkins\, the group grew and evolved\, working with an all-star group of cellists in the Pacific Northwest (Skip vonKuske\, Diane Chaplin\, Nancy Ives\, Gideon Freudmann\, Kevin Jackson\, to name just a few…). The group developed a three-part philosophy that has mostly remained unchanged over the years: \nTo bring the cello places you wouldn’t normally see it (from wild dance parties\, to formal symphony halls\, to street parties\, to Millennium Park in Chicago…). \nTo perform music on the cello you wouldn’t normally associate with the instrument alongside music from the Western Classical Tradition (from Pantera to Taylor Swift to Kanye West to Elliott Smith\, alongside Bach\, Rossini\, and Saint-Saens\, to name just a few…). \nTo build bridges between different musical communities through educational\, community outreach\, and through collaboration with myriad artists\, from The Dandy Warhols to Garrison Keillor to Ural Thomas to Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) to Jolie Holland to Peter Yarrow (Peter\, Paul and Mary)\, among many others\, and cellists such as Ben Sollee\, Maya Beiser and Zoe Keating. \n“It doesn’t get much more genre-crossing than this.”—MTV \n“This indie orchestra gives classical music a jolt of energy.”—Spin Magazine \n“The PCP has come to epitomize Portland’s offbeat music scene\, one where boundaries are blurred and cellos are in abundance.” —The Strad

SUMMARY:Seffarine
DESCRIPTION:Seffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking souq in Fes\, Morocco\, birthplace of vocalist Lamiae Naki\, which is famous for the complex rhythms that ring out from the blacksmiths’ hammers\, and where her family is well known as masters continuing the tradition today. Seffarine’s music embraces and extends Morocco’s musical collision between Arabic\, Iberian and West African cultures\, forging vibrant original music deeply rooted in Naki and oud player/flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp’s backgrounds in Arab-Andalusi and flamenco music. Their companions\, who hail from Iran\, Spain and the US\, infuse the sound with textured instrumentation and inspired improvisation. Sweeping kamancheh (Persian spike-fiddle) ornamentation plays off gritty bass grooves and fiery flamenco footwork\, with Lamiae’s fluidly riveting voice at the center\, sending up sheets of cascading Andalusi melodies punctuated by the catchy hooks of North African Chaabi\, sung in her native Moroccan Arabic. \nAmong the highlights of Seffarine’s performance is passionate and percussive flamenco dance by renowned dancer Manuel Gutierrez from Córdoba\, Spain. \nSeffarine has performed at prestigious events and venues around the world\, like the Lake Tahoe World Concert\, winning over audiences from Indonesia to Spain. They have brought their musical vision and cultural knowledge to community audiences and schools\, including a recent tour of rural Montana schools on the Fort Peck Reservation. The ensemble has a strong history of support from the field: in 2017\, Seffarine was selected by the Western Arts Alliance as one of three Launchpad Artists. Their debut album\, “De Fez a Jerez” was supported by a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council\, allowing the group to work and record in Jerez\, Spain with several of the living legends of flamenco music. DESCRIPTION:I Am An American – Live\nStories of Exclusion and Belonging \nIn celebration of the diversity brought to our country by Americans of Asian ancestry\, we at The Immigrant Story invite you to join us on April 15 for “I Am An American Live.” This event is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition\, with the aim of drawing attention to the historic xenophobia experienced by the Asian American community in Oregon and across the U.S. This history of systemic bias includes policies that have resulted in discrimination\, incarceration\, erasure and a recent increase in hate crimes. \n“I Am An American” will begin with four storytellers sharing their experiences of what it means to belong in America\, even while at times being excluded. Tellers from a diversity of backgrounds from across Asia tell stories of how our government policies have affected them as individuals. They go on to relate how these experiences in their own lives inspired them to become agents of change. These powerful stories will inform us about an important aspect of our past as a nation and offer an opportunity for reflection on our collective history. \nAfter a brief intermission\, the evening will continue with original pan-Asian music composed and presented by Balamurali Balu (Bala)\, a well-known composer in the Tamil film industry\, combining traditional sounds from India\, China and Japan with Western classical orchestral harmonies. We have assembled eminent musicians from the Portland area who have worked collaboratively to create this unique concert. The performance will celebrate the rich cultures brought to the United States by multiple generations of immigrants and refugees. \nJoin us for an evening of stories and music from Oregonians\, about the places they built\, the traditions they brought and what it has meant to truly belong in their hometown. \nThis free event is made possible by a generous contribution by Anne Naito-Campbell. DESCRIPTION:Fans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can re-discover their timeless music all over again\, after a forced nearly two-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions as the group returns to their national tour. All three current members\, Mike Marvin\, Tim Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds\, who was also his musical mentor; Tim\, a close friend since boyhood\, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Buddy\, who has performed with longtime Kingston Trio member George Grove. Many of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts.  They’ll perform such timeless classics “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” and “Tom Dooley”. \nSponsored by Andy and Nancy Bryant.
