SUMMARY:Walking With Giants
DESCRIPTION:Walking With Giants\nA world premiere by composer Nicole Buetti \nPopular local ensemble Big Horn Brass approaches their 40th anniversary under the artistic direction of founder Andrew Harris by commissioning and premiering this work by exciting Portland composer Nicole Buetti! Inspired by the grandeur\, dignity & modern peril of the elephant\, Ms. Buetti’s colorful and evocative use of brass and percussion will be enhanced by stirring video footage of these remarkable animals. Don’t miss this exciting & unique event\, sure to leave a vivid impression. \nThis fall concert\, conducted by David Bryan\, will feature two other original compositions. A Musical Guide to the Big Horn Brass\, by our longtime friend and associate Philip Neuman\, is an enchanting and good-humored work presenting all of the instruments in our ensemble with music and narration. The Risk of Birth is by composer and choral conductor Stephen Galván\, a piece originally for chorus and now adapted for brass by the composer at the request of Andrew Harris. \nThis characteristically varied program will also include arrangements of well-known music by Debussy\, Johann Strauss Sr.\, Leonard Bernstein and others\, all arranged by local friends of Big Horn Brass. This promises to be an uplifting\, thought-provoking and inspiring musical afternoon – come experience it with us!

SUMMARY:Al Stewart with The Empty Pockets
DESCRIPTION:Al Stewart with his Band The Empty Pockets \nAfter Al’s US tour in 2019 with his band The Empty Pockets\, he spent most of 2020 and 2021 sidelined due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But in 2022\, he came back full force with a string of sold-out shows in the United States and the United Kingdom\, and he even made his debut in Israel. In 2023\, he’ll continue his trek with several shows throughout the United States. He will be playing his old favorites\, like Year Of The Cat\, Time Passages\, On the Border\, Nostradamus\, and Roads To Moscow\, along with selections from his deep catalog. \nThe Scottish-born singer-songwriter has released nearly 20 introspective and lyrically powerful records featuring brilliant backing musicians (Jimmy Page\, Phil Collins\, Richard Thompson\, Peter White\, etc.). His biggest platinum successes\, “Year Of The Cat” and “Time Passages”\, were released in 1976 & 1978 respectively. He’s had several top 20 singles\, including the above-mentioned titles\, as well as “On the Border” and “Song On The Radio”. \nIn Al’s own Words: “I’m just a folk singer that is interested in history and wine that got lucky with some hit records! It’s as simple as that really. I was always a huge music fan and originally\, I had wanted to be Brian Jones and then Bob Dylan\, but those two jobs were already taken. And in many ways\, I’m still pretty much the same troubadour that I was back in 1965. I still get a kick out of hearing the Zombies\, Hendrix or They Might be Giants on the radio.”

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Malia Jensen
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk: Malia Jensen\nThursday\, September 21\n6:30 – 8:00 pm \nMalia Jensen’s public-facing sculpture\, Endless Pigeons\, provides an urbane and humorous conversation on the sacred nature of both monuments and modern art. The subject may appear to be the humble pigeon\, common to cities worldwide\, but as suggested by the artist\, “the real subject is the act of observation itself.” During her artist talk\, Jensen will share her 10-year dream\, and the satirical\, witty concepts behind the process\, and the making of Endless Pigeons. \nPhoto by Mario Gallucci

SUMMARY:Love in Exile: Arooj Aftab\, Vijay Iyer\, & Shahzad Ismaily
DESCRIPTION:Love in Exile is the trio of Arooj Aftab\, Vijay Iyer\, and Shahzad Ismaily — three of the most innovative composers and music-makers of today. Together\, they create lush\, haunting soundscapes of meditation and yearning\, weaving bass\, piano\, and vocals into a breathtakingly unified sound. Arooj Aftab describes the project as “about self-exile\, and the search for freedom and identity\, and finding it through love and music.” \nIndividually\, the artists’ accolades are substantial: Vocalist Arooj Aftab\, the first Pakistani to win a GRAMMY Award\, wows audiences worldwide with her mesmerizing live shows and otherworldly voice; MacArthur Genius and GRAMMY nominee Vijay Iyer is one of today’s most influential pianists; and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily’s sensitivity and technical acumen have made him a legend among musicians like the late Lou Reed\, for whom he was a session player. Each artist in the trio uses their distinct backgrounds and vast histories of collaboration as a starting point\, forging a singular voice. \nAs Love in Exile\, the three musicians bring a one-of-a-kind performance — defined by a sense of timeless beauty and sudden surprise — to The Reser for the first time. \n“Aftab\, Iyer\, and Ismaily reveal the beauty in quietude.” —The Guardian \nPitchfork: Love in Exile: Arooj Aftab / Vijah Iyer / Shahzad Usmaily \nSponsored by The Reser Family Foundation

SUMMARY:Tiempo Libre
DESCRIPTION:The three-time Grammy-nominated Afro-Caribbean music group Tiempo Libre is one of the hottest Latin bands today. Equally at home in concert halls\, jazz clubs\, festival stages\, and dance venues\, Tiempo Libre is celebrated for their sophisticated tropical music featuring an irresistible\, exhilarating mix of jazz harmonies\, contemporary sonorities\, and seductive Latin rhythms. Since the group’s formation in Miami in 2001\, its members have been on a mission to share their Afro-Caribbean heritage with as wide an audience as possible\, reinterpreting and reinvigorating music born from the fusion of their musical origins and new American experience. \nAs teenagers in Cuba\, Tiempo Libre’s members studied classical music by day at Havana’s rigorous Russian-style conservatory La ENA.  At night they met up to play the traditional music of their island. After emigrating to the United States\, the men formed Tiempo Libre\, a band that has become known around the world for its sophisticated\, dance-inducing concerts of a Cuban style of music called timba – a joyful combination of Latin jazz\, traditional Cuban “son\,” and other musical elements. Since their inception\, they have garnered three Grammy nominations\, the most recent for their album Bach in Havana\, which melds classical tunes by Johann Sebastian Bach with the soul-stirring rhythms of salsa\, merengue\, and cha-cha. \nAs part of The Reser’s Opening Night Celebration\, we are hosting an Opening Night Party with Tiempo Libre. \nThese tickets are limited\, and we anticipate them going quickly. If you would like to attend\, please purchase the Event and Performance ticket when checking out. \nThe Event and Performance ticket price (show ticket + $75) includes the 6 pm Opening Night Party in The Lab prior to the Tiempo Libre performance\, including heavy hors d’oeuvres\, beverages\, and a special meet and greet with the band. \n  \n \nSponsored by Oregon State University Foundation \nOpening Night Party Sponsored by Tom & Char Holland

SUMMARY:Mishka Rushdie Momen
DESCRIPTION:British pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen\, a rising star known for her refined and expressive playing\, will make her Portland debut in recitals presented by Portland Piano International (PPI). \nLauded as “one of the most thoughtful and sensitive of British pianists” (The Times) whose performances are “full of vim and vigour throughout” (BBC Music Magazine)\, Rushdie Momen has performed on major recital stages throughout North America and Europe — including Wigmore Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, the Lucerne Festival\, Leeds International Piano Series\, and the Oxford Piano Festival. With a focus on works spanning the Renaissance to today\, her programs often juxtapose repertoire from Gibbons and Rameau with audience favorites by Beethoven\, Schubert\, and Schumann\, and newly commissioned works from Nico Muhly\, Vijay Iyer\, and Héloïse Werner. \nAs a concerto soloist\, Rushdie Momen’s recent engagements have included performances with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra\, Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss\, Orchestre National d’Ile de France\, and the Britten Sinfonia. Equally at home as a chamber musician\, she frequently collaborates with Steven Isserlis\, Guy Johnston\, Zlatomir Fung\, Joshua Bell\, Midori\, Stephen Waarts\, Timothy Ridout\, and Anthony Marwood. \nRushdie Momen released her critically acclaimed debut solo recording\, Variations\, in 2019 on SOMM Recordings\, featuring performances of works by Robert and Clara Schumann\, Brahms\, and Mendelssohn that Fanfare magazine praised as “beautifully poetic.” Rushdie Momen was selected by the arts critics of The Times as their chosen nominee in the field of classical music for the 2021 Breakthrough Award given by Sky Arts and The South Bank Show. \nWILLIAM BYRD\nThe Bells \nLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN\nSonata No. 6 in F Major\, op. 10\, no. 2 \nWILLIAM BYRD\nWill Yow Walke the Woods soe Wylde \nFELIX MENDELSSOHN\nVariations sérieuses\, op. 54 \nWILLIAM BYRD\nPavana Lachrymae\, after Flow My Tears by John Dowland \n— Intermission — \nORLANDO GIBBONS\nLord Salisbury’s Pavan and Galliard \nSERGEI PROKOFIEV\nSelections from Visions fugitives\, op. 22 \nFRANZ SCHUBERT\nSonata in C Minor\, D. 958 \nPORTLAND PIANO INTERNATIONAL has presented more than 180 artists in recital and through outreach activities. Some of the greatest pianists in the world of music have played for Portland audiences because of this organization. While pianists have many opportunities to play the concerto repertoire\, this is one of only a handful of recital series that remains devoted to the solo piano recital. Portland Piano International is a vital part of Portland’s quality cultural life and it has consistently garnered praise from both the local and national media\, heralded a “consistently brilliant Piano Recital Series” (Willamette Week) and “one of this city’s musical treasures” (The Oregonian).

DESCRIPTION:The Lobby opens at 6:30 pm.\nThe theater doors open at 7:30 pm.\nAll Ages are welcome. \nBack by overwhelming popular demand!  After a sold-out appearance at The Old Church in March\, it became evident that Sona would need to return to Portland again in 2023. Please join Soul’d Out Productions and The Reser in welcoming her back. \n“Sona Jobarteh is Africa’s first female griot kora virtuoso\, and also a fine singer and composer\, blending traditional music\, blues and Afropop to impressive effect”\n–Robin Denselow\, The Guardian \nPreserving her musical past\, Sona Jobarteh innovates to support a more humanitarian future. The spirit of Sona Jobarteh’s musical work stands on the mighty shoulders of The West African Griot Tradition; she is a living archive of the Gambian people. Her singing and Kora playing while fronting her band\, spring directly from this tradition. The extent of her recognition today is evidenced by more than 23 million+ viewers on YouTube and considerable numbers on other digital platforms. \nSona Jobarteh has performed to crowds from the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to Symphony Space in New York\, and she’s sold out the Barbican in London\, Cologne’s Philharmonie\, and the Seine Musicale in Paris. These performances are under-pinned by her skills as a composer arising from early days at London’s RCM and Purcell School of Music. \nSona Jobarteh scored the film Motherland in 2010 & in 2022 the Hollywood blockbuster Beast\, starring Idris Elba.  She co-wrote a track on LL Cool J’s latest with Q Tip\, and filmed several of her live shows for CBS’ 60 minutes. \nSona’s dedication to spreading powerful humanitarian messages through her songs and her stage performances makes her much more than a musician; she is active in social change and leads by her own example. Sona single handedly set up The Gambia Academy\, a pioneering institution dedicated to achieving educational reform across the continent of Africa. This Academy is the first of its kind to deliver a mainstream academic curriculum at a high level\, whilst also bringing the culture\, traditions and history that belong to its students\, to the front and centre of their everyday education. These efforts have gained her invitations to deliver speeches at high profile events around the world – including summits for the UN\, the World Trade Organization and UNICEF.

SUMMARY:ANNELIES: THE VOICE OF ANNE FRANK
DESCRIPTION:Student tickets $5\, to purchase please contact The Reser Box Office – boxoffice@thereser.org\,(971) 501-7722.\nAdd 8 or more tickets to your cart for a 20% group discount on Standard tickets. \n  \n\nCo-sponsored by the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education with support from Congregation Beth Israel\n  \nJames Whitbourn’s “Annelies” brings to life the diary written by Anne Frank and has been described as “woundingly beautiful” (The Daily Telegraph). Set to music in 2005 by the British composer\, it takes the teenager’s remarkable and penetrating observations\, written whilst hiding in an Amsterdam attic\, as the basis of its extraordinary and moving libretto. He reflects sounds of the Westerkerk bells and tunes heard on the radio in the Annexe\, along with representations of Anne Frank’s Jewish and German heritage\, details that add to a score “whose respectful understatement is its greatest strength” (The Times).\n\nAnne’s insights into the fears\, hopes\, courage and strength experienced as a young Jewish girl in hiding have been ordered into a sequence which tells the story of a whole people who suffered throughout the holocaust\, a period which eventually claimed the life of Anne\, and six of the seven others with her in hiding\, along with six million other Jews. \nFrom the windows\, Anne looked up to the beauty of the sky\, and downwards to the brutality meted out by the Nazis. The contrasting sights inspired some of the most profound and memorable thoughts in an extraordinary diary\, read by millions of people throughout the world. The libretto is compiled and translated by Melanie Challenger from Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl.” \nThis dramatic work is set for chorus\, soprano soloists and four solo instrumentalists: clarinet\, violin\, cello and piano. \nCurrently celebrating its 55th season\, CAE is Portland’s choir\, both geographically and in spirit. We uphold our tradition of choral excellence\, sharing a passion for our art while having a little fun along the way. As one of the region’s premiere choral ensembles\, we continue our tradition of building community\, educating\, enriching\, and entertaining our audiences with exceptional performances of unique and diverse programming performed at the highest artistic level. We are singers who represent a variety of professional occupations and diverse singing experiences\, but we have all joined for a simple reason – passion – for music\, for our fellow singers and for our audiences. Through artistic excellence and creative collaboration\, we are committed to creating inspiring concert experiences.

SUMMARY:Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Repertory Singers opens its 50th Anniversary Season with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s world-famous All-Night Vigil. Considered “among the most beautiful of all works for unaccompanied chorus” and “the greatest musical achievement of the Orthodox Church”\, this work holds a special place in Oregon Repertory Singers history. After its premiere in 1915\, All-Night Vigil vanished almost completely during the Communist Revolution. Oregon Repertory Singers was amongst the first American choirs to perform the piece after the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s and the ensemble has performed it four times since. It is the ideal piece to celebrate the beginning of this historic 50th Anniversary Season. \nWhile Rachmaninoff is best known for his piano concertos and symphonies\, he considered this to be one of his finest works. In fact\, he requested the fifth movement (which features both an exquisite tenor solo and the lowest bass notes in the standard repertoire) be sung at his funeral. Oregon Repertory Singers is thrilled to be joined by tenor soloist Brendan Touhy and bass Eric Alatorre from Chanticleer for these performances. \n*Immediately following the October 21 concert\, there will be a private reception for GEM (Give Every Month) Supporters in The Lab at The Reser. Learn more about our GEM program here.

SUMMARY:Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret w/ Alan Cumming and Ari Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:We have added a second performance of Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret on Sunday\, November 5 at 7 pm. \nAlan Cumming (Cabaret\, The Good Wife) and Ari Shapiro (NPR’s All Things Considered\, Pink Martini)  both transport audiences to other worlds through their stories. Now\, they’re joining forces in SONG. Witness the exclusive debut of their new evening of tunes and tall tales titled “Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret”. Musical direction by Henry Koperski. \n“A friend of Ari Shapiro’s once told him\, unlike a musical revue\, a cabaret is visceral. It comes alive. It needs to evolve\, to go somewhere unpredictable and take the audience along for the ride…Perhaps after a pandemic-induced hiatus\, it’s a precious opportunity to spend time in a room laughing with strangers.” — Cristela Guerra\, WBUR \nIn a statement\, Cumming said\, “I’ve got to know Ari over the last few years\, both socially and when he interviewed me for a couple of events. The last time was an evening in D.C.\, and by the end of it I realized our chemistry and the unusual combo of us\, as well as the fact that Ari has an amazing voice\, would make for a really great cabaret show. And kapow! We’re doing it! What I love most is it’s fresh and ever-changing.” \nShapiro added\, “When Alan first suggested that we create a show together\, I didn’t quite believe him. Then as we started to dig in to this collaboration\, I realized how much our professional lives actually complement each other. We’re both storytellers who try to help audiences better understand themselves and the world around them. SUMMARY:Jad Abumrad: How to Talk to a Human
DESCRIPTION:How to Talk to a Human \nIn this innovative and timely talk\, Abumrad explores the art of conversation. For the last year\, he’s been deep diving into the art of interviewing.  Not just how journalists in his industry do it\, but how do therapists do it?  Salespeople?  Hostage negotiators?  Social workers?  What are the techniques we can all steal and use in our own lives when having difficult conversations with fellow humans? He’ll share insights\, play clips and even lead the audience through a few interactive games. \nMacArthur Fellow & creator of Public Radio’s Radiolab \nJad Abumrad is the creator and former host of Radiolab\, a public radio program broadcast on nearly 600 stations across the nation and downloaded more than 12 million times a month as a podcast. Abumrad hosts Everything. Together. Radio on Apple Music Hits. Each episode offers a kaleidoscopic mix of uptempo\, electro\, dance\, funk\, hip-hop\, experimental noise\, soul\, and everything in between. \nAbumrad employs his dual backgrounds as composer and journalist to create what’s been called “a new aesthetic” in broadcast journalism. He orchestrates dialogue\, music\, interviews and sounds into compelling documentaries that draw listeners into investigations of otherwise intimidating topics\, such as the nature of numbers\, the evolution of altruism\, or the legal foundation for the war on terror. \nHe’s won three George Foster Peabody Awards\, and in 2011 Abumrad was honored as a MacArthur Fellow (also known as the Genius Grant).  The MacArthur Foundation website says:  “Abumrad is inspiring boundless curiosity within a new generation of listeners and experimenting with sound to find ever more effective and entertaining ways to explain ideas and tell a story.” \nJad also created and hosted three seasons of More Perfect\, a series about untold stories of the Supreme Court\, which The New York Times called “…possibly the most mesmerizing podcast.”  And in 2019\, Jad Abumrad created Dolly Parton’s America (along with osm Audio’s Shima Oliaee) a Peabody Award-winning 9-part series that explores a divided America through the life and music of one its greatest icons.   Alongside his radio work\, Abumrad continues to work as a composer and remixer and is currently hosting a radio show on Apple Music. In April 2022 Jad began a joint appointment at Vanderbilt University as a Distinguished Research Professor of Cinema and Media Arts and of Communication of Science and Technology at the College of Arts and Science\, and he will have an advisory role with Vanderbilt’s Communications and Marketing team. \nSponsored by The Reser Family Foundation \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:Nella
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the 2019 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist\, Nella brings her powerhouse voice and undeniable presence to The Reser for a special concert. Merging the folkloric roots of her native Venezuela with the sounds of her generation and influences from Spain’s Andalusia region\, Nella carries her songs around like essential supplies in a backpack and sings them with her soul. \nVenezuelan singer Nella has quickly become acclaimed for her powerhouse voice and her undeniable stage presence. Called a “genre-bending singer/songwriter with bell-toned vocals” by Billboard\, Nella merges the folklore roots of Venezuela\, modern production\, and Andalusian inspirations to create a sound that resonates across the globe. \nAfter skyrocketing to international renown with her debut album Voy (I Go) and earning the 2019 Latin GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist\, Nella’s latest album\, Doce Margaritas (Twelve Daisies)\, finds her reuniting with acclaimed Spanish producer and songwriter Javier Limón. The album explores independence\, desolation\, and finding a sense of self\, with Nella’s ethereal vocals set against a beguiling mix of pop\, jazz\, Spanish flamenco and tropical clave rhythms. \n“Don’t let her flamenco-tinged pop/jazz fool you; 27-year-old Marianella Rojas hails from Isla Margarita\, Venezuela. But the genre-bending singer/songwriter with bell-toned vocals revels in taking her music in many directions.” — Billboard \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:Brad Mehldau Trio
DESCRIPTION:One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano\, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path\, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration\, classical romanticism and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader to major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny\, Renee Fleming\, and Joshua Redman\, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms\, in both trio (with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums) and solo settings\, has seen brilliant re-workings of songs by contemporary songwriters like The Beatles\, Cole Porter\, Radiohead\, Paul Simon\, Gershwin and Nick Drake; alongside the ever evolving breath of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training\, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times). \n

SUMMARY:Issho Rhythm Connection
DESCRIPTION:Issho: Rhythm Connection is Portland Taiko’s first major theater production since 2019. After spending much of the last three years in virtual rehearsals and outdoor performances\, the members of Portland Taiko felt a need to reconnect: to each other\, to friends and family\, to longtime supporters and the greater community. \n“Issho\,” meaning “together” in Japanese\, represents a powerful return to the indoor stage. The performance will explore the connections possible with taiko – linking each performer with each other\, with their instruments and with everyone their sound reaches. \nThe performance will include pieces not performed in many years in addition to fan favorites. The world–class Patricia Reser Center of the Arts is the perfect space to present this wide range of compositions\, from intricate numbers featuring just two drummers\, to beautiful combinations of taiko with violin and flute\, to thunderous full ensemble pieces. \nPortland Taiko blends the tradition of Japanese taiko drumming with a sense of Asian American identity\, creativity and empowerment. The group has headlined at arts festivals and concert halls and performed at hundreds of schools and community events. In recent months\, Portland Taiko has performed at Oregon Rises Above Hate\, Portland’s Refuge Day Walk\, the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Memorial Service and the Rose Festival Starlight Parade. \nFor those who have never seen taiko before\, Issho will be an excellent introduction. Those already familiar with taiko can look forward to intricate rhythms\, exciting choreography and abundant energy and enthusiasm from the crowd and performers. \nPhoto by: Mark Shigenaga
