SUMMARY:The Law of Mosaics - A Musical Montage Across Four Centuries
DESCRIPTION:The Law of Mosaics with the Oregon Symphony brings together four centuries of music and considers the ways in which artists\, by engaging with each other across time\, help us to better understand ourselves\, and the world. Framing the program is a “classical symphony\,” stitched together from the work of four composers from the past: C.P.E. Bach\, Ludwig van Beethoven\, W.A. Mozart\, and Louise Farrenc. Interspersed between each movement are four pieces from some of the most imaginative composers of our time which explore a musical collage in a variety of ways\, mining memory\, madcap humor\, and ghostly nostalgia. \nTed HEARNE: “Palindrome for Andrew Norman” from The Law of Mosaics\nC.P.E. BACH: First movement from Symphony in D Major\, Wq. 183/1\nJessie MONTGOMERY: Records from A Vanishing City\nBEETHOVEN: Finale from Symphony No. 7 in A Major\nLIGETI: Poème symphonique (“Symphonic Poem”)\nMOZART: Second movement from Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major\nAndrew NORMAN: Try\nFARRENC: Finale from Symphony No. 2 in D Major \nDeanna Tham\, Conductor\nOregon Symphony\nGabriel Kahane\, Curator and Host

SUMMARY:¡Viva el amor!
DESCRIPTION:¡Viva el amor! is a rich and vibrant tapestry of choral music from Peru\, Venezuela\, Cuba\, Argentina\, México\, and the United States\, presented by ISing Choir under the direction of Stephen Galván. ISing will provide a veritable feast for the senses with this concert\, which features a collection of Hispanic love songs as well as sacred music based on folk rhythms and melodies native to these countries. “Hanacpachap\,” a processional hymn to the Virgin Mary in the Quechua language\, was composed by an Inca student of Franciscan priest Juan Pérez de Bocanegra between 1620 and 1631\, and is the earliest work of vocal polyphony printed in the New World. “Misa Criolla” by Argentinian composer Ariel Ramírez is an invitation of love encompassing pieces traditionally sung in the Roman Catholic mass. The multicultural folk ensemble Grupo Condor will accompany the choir on both these works. Audiences will be sure to remember “Oblivion”\, based on the tango music of Astor Piazzolla\, long after leaving the concert hall\, along with the smooth and sensuous melodies of compositions such as “Al Tribunal De Tu Pecho” by Carlos Guastavino and Z. Randall Stroope’s “Amor De Mi Alma”. \nIn keeping with ISing’s mission\, the choir will be accepting separate donations (cash\, check or credit card) to support this season’s beneficiary\, Mariachi Una Voz\, a Mariachi band composed of middle and high school students. Mariachi is a beautiful art form from México\, and this program provides an opportunity for the audience to explore and enjoy part of México’s rich culture.

Nontombi Naomi Tutu\, the third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu\, has led a career shaped by the complexities and challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa —framing her life as an activist for human rights. With his innovative use of digital effects and looping\, Kye weaves together diverse textures\, catchy melodies\, and rich\, sweet vocals to create songs that groove\, uplift\, and empower listeners: “A single violinist…one mesmerizing symphony” (Sacramento Bee). \nAfter studying music and culture at Yale University\, Kye left a career as a high school educator to pursue music full-time. Following the release of his acclaimed 2015 EP\, Joseph in the Well\, Kye toured the United States with performances opening for world-renown cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Senator Bernie Sanders\, along with a nationally broadcast performance on NPR’s Science Friday. He has been a keynote speaker for Multicultural Week at the Urban School of SF and worked with the United Methodist Church’s General Commission on Religion and Race. \nPrevious collaborations include the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra\, the Sacramento Ballet\, Alvin Ailey Composer/Percussionist William Catanzaro\, and LA hip-hop artist Jason Chu. Kye has performed in venues like Benaroya Hall (Seattle)\, Community Center Theater (TEDx Sacramento)\, the Legislative Back-To-Session Bash (California)\, NAMM MainStage (Anaheim)\, the Baryshnikov Arts Center (NYC)\, and the White House. Kye is a Fishman and Neunaber Audio Effects sponsored artist\, and has studied violin with Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi\, John Kim\, and Jim Mihara. \n“Kye’s music discharged a world of emotions within me…delivering a comforting divine message.” Pauline France\, Guitar World.  \n“lovely and nimble…a la Andrew Bird” – Dave Christensen\, Oregon Public Broadcasting  \n“Anyone in the audience who hadn’t heard of Joe Kye before will certainly remember him now: his solo set’s lush violin loops left everyone in awe.” – Sacramento News & Review  \n“Weeping violins\, bouncy rhythms\, ambient sounds\, and the occasional featured rap verse…melding of musical styles Kye is so loved for.” – Julia Coakley\, WPTS  \n“A single violinist…one mesmerizing symphony.” – Sacramento Bee  \nAustin Antoine is a performance artist that blends music and poetry. All of his passions effortlessly mix with abilities that span from singing soulful solos to conquering an opposing rapper in a contest of improvised wit. His work can be seen with NBA 2k\, Viacom CBS\, Sofar Sounds\, Guinness Book of World Records\, and Buzzfeed. \nHe also stars in the 2021 film “Summertime“\, directed by Carlos López Estrada. \nHis latest EP The Rest is History is now available on all streaming platforms. \nPerformance run time: 45/20/45 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Marian Masterworks
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Chorale\, Marian Masterworks \nThe Oregon Chorale’s debut at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts features the hauntingly emotional music of two of Central Europe’s most renowned modern composers. Henryk Górecki’s Marian Songs (Pieśni Maryjne)\, op. 54 features five a cappella movements comprised of musical prayers to different aspects of the Virgin Mary\, the patron saint of Poland. Gorecki incorporates Polish folk and sacred music into a gorgeous\, flowing\, and seemingly simplistic style shaped by modernist elements. Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Passion and Resurrection uses texts drawn from Catholic\, Protestant\, and Byzantine liturgy brought to life through powerfully emotional music. Our guest artist\, soprano Arwen Myers lends her stunning talent to this captivating masterpiece accompanied by a professional string orchestra. \nSaturday\, June 3\, 2023\, @ 7:00 pm \nSunday\, June 4\, 2023\, @ 3:00 pm \nRuntimes: 30/15/30

DESCRIPTION:Vienna\, one of the European musical capitals of the 18th to 20th centuries\, was the home for some of the most important composers in history. At the heart of the First Viennese School of composition was the iconic Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, and two of his divinely beautiful works bookend this program that feature Artistic Directors Gloria Chien and Soovin Kim. The revolutionary Second Viennese School is represented by Anton Webern’s hair-raising quintet transcription of Arnold Schoenberg’s first Chamber Symphony\, played by the “Pierrot ensemble” Third Sound—a dynamic instrumental combination of violin\, cello\, flute\, clarinet\, and piano that sounds like a small orchestra. \nPRELUDE PERFORMANCES:\n7 pm | with Bridging Voices in The Reser lobby \nClick here for artists and program information. \nThis performance is part of Chamber Music Northwest’s 2023 Summer Festival.
