SUMMARY:UNCOVERED Voices
DESCRIPTION:Exceptional musical partnerships from critically acclaimed albums headline this program. Artistic Director Gloria Chien and heralded clarinetist Anthony McGill are longtime recital partners\, and the exhilarating F Minor sonata was part of their recording of the Brahms clarinet sonatas. McGill joins the Catalyst Quartet in the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor quintet that is part of UNCOVERED—the Catalyst’s multi-volume spotlight on previously overlooked Black composers. Sensational pianist and composer Stewart Goodyear\, and beloved Portland flutist Amelia Lukas also introduce us to spectacular music from Deena Grossman\, Tania Léon\, and one of Goodyear’s own solo piano works.PRELUDE \nPERFORMANCES:\n7 pm | with Cognizart’s Young Artists Debut! Winners in The Reser lobby \nClick here to learn more about the artists and the program. \nThis performance is part of Chamber Music Northwest’s 2023 Summer Festival.

SUMMARY:Viennese Revolutionaries
DESCRIPTION:Vienna\, one of the European musical capitals of the 18th to 20th centuries\, was the home for some of the most important composers in history. At the heart of the First Viennese School of composition was the iconic Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, and two of his divinely beautiful works bookend this program that feature Artistic Directors Gloria Chien and Soovin Kim. The revolutionary Second Viennese School is represented by Anton Webern’s hair-raising quintet transcription of Arnold Schoenberg’s first Chamber Symphony\, played by the “Pierrot ensemble” Third Sound—a dynamic instrumental combination of violin\, cello\, flute\, clarinet\, and piano that sounds like a small orchestra. \nPRELUDE PERFORMANCES:\n7 pm | with Bridging Voices in The Reser lobby \nClick here for artists and program information. \nThis performance is part of Chamber Music Northwest’s 2023 Summer Festival.

SUMMARY:Walking With Giants
DESCRIPTION:Walking With Giants\nA world premiere by composer Nicole Buetti \nPopular local ensemble Big Horn Brass approaches their 40th anniversary under the artistic direction of founder Andrew Harris by commissioning and premiering this work by exciting Portland composer Nicole Buetti! Inspired by the grandeur\, dignity & modern peril of the elephant\, Ms. Buetti’s colorful and evocative use of brass and percussion will be enhanced by stirring video footage of these remarkable animals. Don’t miss this exciting & unique event\, sure to leave a vivid impression. \nThis fall concert\, conducted by David Bryan\, will feature two other original compositions. A Musical Guide to the Big Horn Brass\, by our longtime friend and associate Philip Neuman\, is an enchanting and good-humored work presenting all of the instruments in our ensemble with music and narration. The Risk of Birth is by composer and choral conductor Stephen Galván\, a piece originally for chorus and now adapted for brass by the composer at the request of Andrew Harris. \nThis characteristically varied program will also include arrangements of well-known music by Debussy\, Johann Strauss Sr.\, Leonard Bernstein and others\, all arranged by local friends of Big Horn Brass. This promises to be an uplifting\, thought-provoking and inspiring musical afternoon – come experience it with us!

SUMMARY:Al Stewart with The Empty Pockets
DESCRIPTION:Al Stewart with his Band The Empty Pockets \nAfter Al’s US tour in 2019 with his band The Empty Pockets\, he spent most of 2020 and 2021 sidelined due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But in 2022\, he came back full force with a string of sold-out shows in the United States and the United Kingdom\, and he even made his debut in Israel. In 2023\, he’ll continue his trek with several shows throughout the United States. He will be playing his old favorites\, like Year Of The Cat\, Time Passages\, On the Border\, Nostradamus\, and Roads To Moscow\, along with selections from his deep catalog. \nThe Scottish-born singer-songwriter has released nearly 20 introspective and lyrically powerful records featuring brilliant backing musicians (Jimmy Page\, Phil Collins\, Richard Thompson\, Peter White\, etc.). His biggest platinum successes\, “Year Of The Cat” and “Time Passages”\, were released in 1976 & 1978 respectively. He’s had several top 20 singles\, including the above-mentioned titles\, as well as “On the Border” and “Song On The Radio”. \nIn Al’s own Words: “I’m just a folk singer that is interested in history and wine that got lucky with some hit records! It’s as simple as that really. I was always a huge music fan and originally\, I had wanted to be Brian Jones and then Bob Dylan\, but those two jobs were already taken. And in many ways\, I’m still pretty much the same troubadour that I was back in 1965. I still get a kick out of hearing the Zombies\, Hendrix or They Might be Giants on the radio.”
