SUMMARY:I Am an American: Stories of Exclusion and Belonging - Live
DESCRIPTION:I Am an American: Stories of Exclusion and Belonging – Live \nIn observance of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, we at The Immigrant Story invite you to join us on May 6 for “I Am an American Live.” This event is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition\, with the aim of drawing attention to the historic xenophobia experienced by the Asian American community in Oregon and across the U.S. This history of systemic bias includes policies that have resulted in discrimination\, incarceration\, erasure\, and a recent increase in hate crimes.   \n“I Am an American” will kick off with original pan-Asian music composed for this occasion that combines sounds from Asia with Western harmonies. We have assembled eminent musicians from the Portland area who are trained in a variety of traditions. The performance will represent some of the many strands of Asian musical traditions and showcase what this community brings to America. The music is composed and arranged by Balamurali Balu\, an Indian film music composer.  \nAfter a brief intermission\, storytellers with roots from across Asia will present their lived experiences exploring what it means to belong in America\, even when being partially erased and\, at times\, excluded. These powerful stories will inform us about an important aspect of our past as a state and as a nation and offer an opportunity for reflection on our collective history. \nJoin us for an evening of stories and music from Oregonians\, about the places they built\, the traditions they brought and what it has meant to truly belong in their hometown. \nThis free event is made possible by a generous contribution by Anne Naito-Campbell. Programming has been done with the support of the City of Beaverton and in part by a grant from the Oregon Heritage Commission and Oregon Parks and Recreation.  \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. For this performance – all patrons\, regardless of age\, are required to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend events until further notice. \nThe Reser strongly recommends but does not require guests to wear masks in our building or when attending Reser Presents performances.

SUMMARY:Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana
DESCRIPTION:Internationally Renowned Artists * Flamenco and Spanish Dance \nFlamenco Vivo Carlota Santana Dance Company upholds the purity and traditions of flamenco\, while pushing the boundaries of the art form in new directions. Innovative music\, resounding cante hondo\, exotic movements—the artists’ power and passion has electrified and educated audiences throughout the nation. \nFlamenco Vivo is one of the nation’s premier flamenco and Spanish dance companies. They believe that the universal spirit of flamenco\, a multicultural art form\, has the power to build bridges between cultures and inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds. \nDe la Frontera is a new evening-length work choreographed by José Maldonado and Karen Lugo\, with an original score by Jose Luis de la Paz. De la Frontera is an investigation of life and connectedness. It asks: “What is stronger – what unites us or what separates us?” Despite the barriers we inevitably encounter from the moment we enter this world; we are driven to push beyond these obstacles and seek deeper connection. Using flamenco’s innate ability to embody and express the full range of the human condition\, Maldonado and Lugo probe our emotional boundaries by questioning their very existence. De la Frontera underscores that flamenco does not understand nor accept borders; rather it is our means of connection and expression\, giving the artist power to supersede these limitations.  Hailed by the New York Times for his “bursts of brilliance and uncommon invention\,” Maldonado is the winner of the 2019 Premio Artista Revelación at the XXIII Festival of Jerez\, an award for best up-and-coming artist. His last commission for Flamenco Vivo was heralded as “the rare flamenco group piece that doesn’t stifle the individual spirit.” \nCarlota Santana\, Artistic Director and Founder\, has been designated “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine in recognition of her commitment to creating new works and developing young artists and choreographers. She has dedicated her company to the mission of building bridges between cultures using the universal spirit of flamenco. \nThe company promotes flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage; creates quality new dance works and presents them in major theatrical venues; presents arts education programs that catalyze connections among people of different cultures; and nurtures the next generation of Spanish dance artists and educators. \nThis performance is scheduled to run 80 minutes with no intermission. \nThis event is sponsored by U.S. Bank. \n  \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. For Reser Presents performances – all patrons\, regardless of age\, are required to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend events until further notice. \nThe Reser strongly recommends but does not require guests to wear masks in our building or when attending Reser Presents performances.

SUMMARY:John Scofield
DESCRIPTION:John Scofield presented by PDX Jazz\nFeaturing Vicente Archer\, Jon Cowherd & Josh Dion\nThe PDX Jazz debut show at Patricia Reser Center for the Arts \nScofield’s muse has evolved from guitar standards to post-bop to fusion and back again. (He wears) a gilded robe as the modern messiah of “Terminator jazz.” DownBeat \nAside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar\, John Scofield is a creative artist of an even rarer sort: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent\, rock-solid aesthetic identity. \nA triple Grammy award winning artist with more than 40 recordings to his credit\, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop\, blues\, jazz-funk\, organ jazz\, acoustic chamber jazz\, electronically tinged groove music\, jam band style and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. \nAffectionately called\, Yankee Go Home\, Scofield’s latest project covers Americana / Rock hits and jazzed-out folk songs\, with a few original tunes in the roots / rock / jazz vein. “I’m reconnecting with a lot of my teenaged Rock ‘n Roll roots – naturally colored by my 50 years of Jazz practices\,” Scofield says\, “For me this is a play on we “Yankees” taking up the music of our homeland.” He’s been working on reinterpretations of music from Leonard Bernstein to Neil Young\, Buddy Holly to Stevie Wonder\, and the Grateful Dead. \nScofield is joined by a stellar band featuring Jon Cowherd (keyboardist with Brian Blade Fellowship and Cassandra Wilson among others)\, Vicente Archer (string bass with Robert Glasper\, Louis Hayes\, and Scofield Combo 66\, etc.)\, and drummer Josh Dion. \n“These guys are remarkably versatile\, just as good as it gets when it comes to interactive\, creative playing. We’re exploring rock\, funk\, country\, jazz and free music and having a fantastic time doing it. I’m excited about this collaboration.” \n…an incredibly resourceful display of devices and strategies…he just burned. SUMMARY:DakhaBrakha
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian * Unexpected * Trans-National \nHailing from Kyiv\, Ukraine\, DakhaBrakha reflects the fundamental elements of sound\, soul\, and “ethno-chaos” to create a world of unexpected new music. Accompanied by Indian\, Arabic\, African\, Russian\, and Australian traditional instrumentation\, this quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture and ethos. \n“The group mixes everything from punk-pop to traditional Ukrainian songs in cool yet beguiling textures\, often with the close harmonies usually associated with Balkan music. But it’s really the live shows that take DakhaBrakha beyond mere curiosity to utter brilliance.” — NPR \nThe name DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in Ukrainian\, and reflects their resilience and philosophy. Having experimented with Ukrainian folk music\, the band added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music to create their own unique and original style. \nFirmly rooted at the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater\, DakhaBrakha’s musical spectrum is both intimate and riotous\, plumbing the depths of traditional and contemporary roots and rhythms\, and inspiring “cultural and artistic liberation.” DakhaBrakha is a musical gift both unforgettable and rare. \n2 PERFORMANCES\nSunday\, April 17\, 2022\nMonday\, April 18\, 2022 \nEach performance is 80 minutes with no intermission. \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. Therefore\, we need help to win this fight\, to protect refugees\, to get weapons\, and medical care. \nOur performance is a testament to the crime of Russian troops\, the humanitarian catastrophe they caused\, the horrific deaths of civilians in Kharkiv\, Mariupol\, Chernihiv\, Sumy\, Bucha\, Gostomel and many other parts of the country. \nAt the same time\, our performance is a hymn to our defenders and to the Ukrainian people\, who stand courageously and restrain this evil. \nWe are here today because we are musicians and artists. It is very important for us to feel support and solidarity with Ukraine. The Ukrainian people became victims of Russian aggression and heroes of resistance at the same time. Because slaves cannot defeat free people.” \nLearn more about their story. \nPlease consider donating to these trusted donation organizations: \nhttps://savelife.in.ua/ \nhttps://www.prorizne.org/ \nhttps://ukrainian.foundation/ \n  \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES

SUMMARY:Oregon Symphony – Be As Water
DESCRIPTION:Inspiring * Exhilarating * Riveting \nIn this wide-ranging meditation on the liquid we can’t live without\, Handel’s irresistibly buoyant Water Music becomes a foil for five contemporary works that draw inspiration from water—three of them written by composers nominated for 2022 GRAMMY Awards—at a time when the planet is increasingly imperiled. Bookended by an electrifying percussion quartet by local favorite Andy Akiho and Nico Muhly’s 2007 masterpiece The Only Tune—a radical re-imagining of the timeless folk song “Two Sisters” featuring London-based avant-folk star Sam Amidon—this concert\, performed by the Oregon Symphony\, will offer listeners an opportunity to hear Handel’s classic through fresh ears\, while experiencing cutting-edge new works from rising stars Timo Andres\, Gabriella Smith\, and inti figgis-vizueta. \nOregon Symphony – Be As Water \nJeffrey Kahane\, Conductor\nGabriel Kahane\, Host\nTimo Andres\, Piano\nSam Amidon\, Vocals\, Banjo\, and Guitar\nMembers of the Oregon Symphony \nAndy Akiho                 Empty Your Mind \nHandel                         Water Music\, Suite 1\, \nInti Figgis-Vizueta      Mayu (The Great River) \nHandel                         Water Music\, Suite 1 \nGabriella Smith           Maré \nHandel                         Water Music\, Suite 1 \nTimo Andres               Tides and Currents \nHandel                         Water Music\, Suite 1 \nNico Muhly                  The Only Tune \n  \nMasks are required at this performance. \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES

SUMMARY:Gabriel Kahane-Magnificent Bird
DESCRIPTION:Gabriel Kahane – Magnificent Bird with the Oregon Symphony \nOregon Symphony joins Patricia Reser Center for the Arts’ Grand Opening Spring Season with the orchestral world premiere of Gabriel Kahane’s Magnificent Bird\, a new song cycle written in the final month of a year-long\, complete hiatus from the internet. At once intimate and ambitious\, Kahane’s latest work toggles between personal loss and a series of public crises that continue to roil the nation. Interspersed among this new collection of songs are selections from Book of Travelers\, Gabriel’s musical account of an 8\,980-mile train trip that he took in the aftermath of the 2016 election\, as well as the uproarious Twitterkreis\, nano-songs he began to release serially on Instagram in 2018. Equal parts raconteur\, songwriter\, and cultural critic\, Kahane promises to shepherd the audience through a cathartic evening that probes our individual and collective relationships to technology\, and the consequences that emerge from the contemporary digital regime: to our planet\, our body politic\, our dignity\, and\, perhaps most crucially\, our ability to love. \n\nProgram: \n\n\n\nGabriel Kahane\, Voice\, Piano\, and Guitars \n\n\nNorman Huynh\, Conductor \n\n\nSelections to be announced from the stage. \nGabriel Kahane’s New Album\, Magnificent Bird\, is out now on Nonesuch Records. \n\nMasks are required at this performance. \n\nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES

DESCRIPTION:Tony Award-Winner * Disney Legend * Broadway Star \nMultiple award-winning actress and singer Lea Salonga brings her unmistakable voice to The Reser. Celebrated for her powerful performances and perfect pitch\, Salonga’s big break came when she snagged the role of Kim in the megahit musical Miss Saigon\, for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Since then\, Salonga has starred in Broadway productions of Les Misérables\, Once on this Island\, Allegiance\, and more. In this special evening at The Reser\, Salonga smartly weaves together pop hits and Broadway standards\, in addition to the songs she’s made famous as the singing voice of Disney princesses Jasmine (Aladdin) and Fa Mulan (Mulan and Mulan II). \nLea Salonga claimed her theatrical crown at 18\, when she created the role of Kim in the epic musical Miss Saigon in London’s West End and\, subsequently\, on Broadway. SUMMARY:OMAR SOSA & SECKOU KEITA SUBA Trio ft. GUSTAVO OVALLES
DESCRIPTION:PDX Jazz Presents Omar Sosa & Seckou Keita Suba Trio ft. Gustavo Ovalles \nThe Atlantic Ocean separates Cuba and Senegal\, the respective birthplaces of piano virtuoso Omar Sosa and kora master Seckou Keita\, a distance diminished by their shared ancestral connection to Africa. Recorded during lockdown and released in October 2021\, Sosa and Keita’s second album SUBA is a hymn to hope\, to a new dawn of compassion and real change in a post-pandemic world\, a visceral reiteration of humanity’s perennial prayer for peace and unity. \n“Sosa and Keita deliver a work that variously ebbs\, flows and sparkles.” – Jane Cornwell\, Jazzwise \nWhen the pair met in 2012\, Seckou loved Omar for his musical spirituality\, whilst Omar saw in Seckou a rare ability to collaborate but not lose his identity. Their debut album Transparent Water (2017) was hailed as ‘beautiful\, rhapsodic… spiritual’ – Songlines and ‘…mesmerising\, evocative and sophisticated.’ – World Music Central \nCuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa is one of the most versatile jazz artists on the scene today. He fuses a wide range of jazz\, world music\, and electronic elements with his native Afro-Cuban roots to create a fresh and original urban sound – all with a Latin jazz heart. Omar Sosa’s musical trajectory has taken him from Camagüey and Havana to touring in Angola\, the Congo\, Ethiopia\, and Nicaragua in the 1980s; to a sojourn in the African-descent communities of Ecuador in the early 1990s; to an extended presence on the San Francisco Bay Area Latin jazz scene; to his current engagement with artists from France\, Cuba\, Brazil\, and several North\, West\, and East African nations. \nHis career embodies the expansive outlook of a visionary artist who has taken Monk’s uncompromising spirit to heart\, while working ceaselessly to craft and project a unique\, cosmopolitan voice. \nMr. Sosa received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian Associates in Washington\, DC in 2003 for his contribution to the development of Latin jazz in the United States. Over the years\, Omar has released 30 albums and has been nominated six times for a GRAMMY and twice for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards. In 2003 he received the Afro-Caribbean Jazz Album of the Year Award from the Jazz Journalists Association in NYC for his recording Sentir; and a nomination from the Jazz Journalists Association for Latin Jazz Album of the Year in 2005 for his recording Mulatos\, featuring Paquito D’Rivera. In 2008\, Omar Sosa was commissioned by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and the Oakland East Bay Symphony to compose a major work for symphony orchestra (From Our Mother)\, supported by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. \nThe UK-based Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita has made a name for himself as one of the foremost innovators operating in African music today. In the two decades since he landed in the UK he has established himself as the their foremost kora player and become an integral mainstay of the nation’s vibrant multicultural roots scene. Working solo\, or in collaboration with an eclectic range of musicians\, his virtuosity has consistently adorned some of this magazine’s favorite five-star albums and won him three Songlines Music Awards in the process. \nThere has also been a brace of awards at that very British institution\, the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards\, including “Folk Musician of the Year”\, an honor of which he is particularly proud\, but which he greeted with characteristic modesty. “I don’t know if I’m a folk musician\, a jazz or a world one\,” he said at the time. “Forget about categories. My music is just music to be listened to – it’s good music for the soul and no matter your feelings\, if you’re sad or happy\, it will fit in. It’s a healing process.”

SUMMARY:NASSIM
DESCRIPTION:Solo Theatre * Breaking Down Barriers * Award-Winning \nNo rehearsals. A sealed envelope. A new actor at every performance. And a few surprises. From the creator of the Off-Broadway smash White Rabbit\, Red Rabbit comes NASSIM\, an innovative new play that explores the power of language and friendship. The New York Times calls it “an affectionate play about friendship\,” and the Hollywood Reporter raves it’s “exhilarating fun\, but also touching\, moving\, and soulful.” Direct from playing to sold-out audiences around the globe\, NASSIM comes to The Reser this spring. \nFrom Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour comes an audacious theatrical experiment: each night\, a different performer joins the playwright on stage\, while the script waits unseen in a sealed box. \nTouchingly autobiographical yet powerfully universal\, NASSIM is a striking theatrical demonstration of how language can both divide and unite us. NASSIM\, toured globally\, is translated and performed in the native language of each country in which it’s performed. \nNASSIM won the Fringe First Award at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was subsequently performed in 20 countries within 200 days. In 2019\, NASSIM landed in New York City for its American premiere and an Off-Broadway run\, where it won the Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience. The five-month New York City Center run boasted over 150 renowned actors\, writers\, and creators\, including Michael Shannon\, Tracy Letts\, Kate Arrington\, Carrie Coon\, Lisa Emery\, Cory Michael Smith\, Kathy Najimy\, Michael Urie\, Phillipa Soo\, and many other stars of theater\, television\, and film. \nApril 8 featuring actor Josie Seid \nAbout Josie Seid \nJosie Seid is a local actor and playwright\, known for her roles in Into the Woods and Drowsy Chaperone at Broadway Rose\, An Octoroon and Miracle Worker at Artists Repertory Theatre\, and Brother Sister Plays at the Portland Playhouse. Josie is a member of the LineStorm Playwrights Collective and Artists Rep Playwrights group\, Squabble and Throb. Aside from her short and full-length plays\, a list including The Great God of the Dark Storm Cloud and Being Me in this Current America\, Josie wrote\, performed\, and co-directed in the acclaimed short film Forget Me Not America. In addition\, she is an international arts envoy for the United States and has performed in both Cairo and Alexandria\, Egypt\, representing the United States in the International CIFCET Theater Festival. \nApril 9 featuring actor Troy Metcalf \nAbout Troy Metcalf \nTroy Metcalf is an actor\, producer and teacher known for his reoccurring role on The Middle\, Strangers with Candy\, Baskets and his role in Rihanna’s ANTI diaRy: Room 4 music video. You will soon see him in the much-anticipated film\, Babylon\, with Brad Pitt and Olivia Wilde.  Troy Metcalf holds a BFA in Theatre Performance from South West Missouri State University and is a Graduate of New Actors Workshop where he studied under George Morrison\, Mike Nichols and Paul Sills.  Troy Metcalf – IMDb \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES

SUMMARY:Zakir Hussain\, Jayanthi Kumaresh and Kala Ramnath
DESCRIPTION:Kalakendra Presents an Evening of Indian Classical Instrumental Music TRIVENI with ZAKIR HUSSAIN\, Jayanthi Kumaresh and Kala Ramnath. \nZakir Hussain\, Kala Ramnath\, and Jayanthi Kumaresh have come together for the first time as a trio for the 2022 TRIVENI tour. Leading Indian classical exponents of their respective instruments—tabla\, violin\, and Saraswati veena—each is also renowned as a virtuoso\, collaborator\, pathbreaker\, and educator\, advancing the art of their particular instruments to remarkable levels in the context of their classical traditions and beyond. Feted and honored in India and abroad with numerous awards\, each has successfully toured all over the world with their own acclaimed solo projects. \nTriveni is the mythical site of the union of three sacred rivers in India\, and the name aptly represents the confluence of the varied musicalities which the three maestros bring to this collaboration. A hallmark of Zakir Hussain’s iconic career has been his groundbreaking work at the forefront of brilliant musical dialogues between Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) music.  With Kala Ramnath\, an innovative representative of North Indian raga tradition\, Jayanthi Kumaresh\, the leading exponent of the ancient South Indian veena\, and Zakir Hussain seamlessly stitching North and South Indian rhythm traditions to provide a bridge for veena and violin to meet\, TRIVENI promises to be a fluent\, joyous and entirely original musical conversation\, a sonic experience of the highest order. \nAssigned seating.
