SUMMARY:Caroline Shaw and Gabriel Kahane: Hexagons
DESCRIPTION:Both Caroline Shaw and Gabriel Kahane are respected as performers and contemporary composers whose work exists at the intersection of art and social practice. Now\, the two embark on their first large-scale collaboration after working together for more than a decade. \nHexagons is a new work\, co-commissioned by the Oregon Symphony\, inspired by the magical realism of Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges’s 1939 short story\, “The Library of Babel.” In this enigmatic narrative\, Borges conjures a captivating and perplexing universe where the notion of infinity collides with the fragility of human understanding. Randomly arranged books\, each containing exactly 410 pages\, fill the Library of Babel’s infinite expanse of interlocking hexagonal rooms\, encompassing all knowledge that currently exists or may exist in the future while paradoxically offering no true enlightenment. Shaw and Kahane invite audiences to contemplate the joy\, grief\, wonder\, and bewilderment that spring from a life oversaturated in information. \nGabriel Kahane is a musician and storyteller. Highlights of this season include duo tours with fellow composer/performer Caroline Shaw in the U.S. and Europe; the premiere of an orchestral oratorio\, co- commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony and Oregon Symphony\, chronicling the aftermath of the 2020 Almeda Wildfire; a solo debut with the Orchestre National de Lyon; and his San Francisco conducting debut with Carla Kihlstedt’s Twenty-six Little Deaths. Heirloom\, a piano concerto written for his father\, Jeffrey Kahane\, will be released this fall by Nonesuch Records. Gabriel has released five albums as a singer-songwriter\, and has collaborated with artists including Phoebe Bridgers\, Sufjan Stevens\, Sylvan Esso\, the Danish String Quartet\, Anthony McGill\, and Pekka Kuusisto\, his bandmate in the duo ‘Council.’ Kahane’s writings on music\, literature\, and politics can be found at http://gabrielkahane.substack.com. He lives in Portland\, Oregon\, with his family. \nCaroline Shaw is a musician who moves among roles\, genres\, and mediums\, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed. She is the recipient of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music\, several Grammy awards\, an honorary doctorate from Yale\, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. She has worked with a range of artists including Rosalía\, Renée Fleming\, and Yo Yo Ma\, and she has contributed music to films and tv series including Fleishman is in Trouble\, Bombshell\, Yellowjackets\, Maid\, Dark\, and Beyonce’s Homecoming. Her favorite color is yellow\, and her favorite smell is rosemary. \nCommissioned by Newman Center for the Performing Arts\, San Francisco Performances\, University Musical Society\, Duke Arts\, Philharmonie de Paris\, Philharmonic Society of Orange County\, Wigmore Hall\, and the Oregon Symphony. \nOregon Symphony co-commission sponsored by Tim & Sarah Wright \nSponsored by Ronni Lacroute

SUMMARY:Portugal. The Man: A Live Recording Experience
DESCRIPTION:An Unforgettable Live Recording Experience and Benefit Concert Featuring: Grammy Award Winning Portugal. The Man. \nJoin us for an intimate evening with Grammy award winning Portugal. The Man. This one-night-only experience features a special live recording and an opportunity to come together as a community to support a vital cause\, Frances Changed My Life. All ticket sales will help drive advancements in medical research and bring hope to those affected by this condition. Join us for an extraordinary night of celebration\, community and Rock history in the making. \nABOUT PORTUGAL. THE MAN: \nOver the past decade\, Portugal. The Man has established themselves as one of rock’s most prized possessions and a live performance phenomenon; having rocked over 1\,600 shows and a storied reputation as festival favorites. \nOriginally heralding from Alaska\, the Portland-based band soared to new heights in 2017 with the release of their now RIAA certified-Platinum album\, Woodstock. The album was marked by the astounding success of their infectious single\, “Feel It Still\,” which earned the group a plethora of new accolades – including a GRAMMY for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance\,” a 7x RIAA Platinum certification\, a record setting 26-week residency at #1\, which is the longest running #1 in Alternative Radio History. \nAlongside the shine of their myriad of musical accomplishments lies the group’s long-standing passion for social justice. Throughout their career\, the band has consistently exemplified how to deeply commit to both artistry and activism. This ultimately inspired them to officially launch PTM Foundation in 2020\, focused on universal issues related to human rights\, community health\, and the environment\, with an emphasis on causes directly impacting Indigenous Peoples\, including Alaska Native Health (providing the highest quality of health services for Alaska Native people) and Seeding Sovereignty (radicalizing and disrupting colonized spaces through land\, body\, food sovereignty work and more). \nPortugal. The Man have also partnered with an array of organizations such as National Coalition Against Censorship\, The Skatepark Project (helping communities build public skate parks for youth in underserved communities)\, March for Our Lives (Gun Reform)\, Keep Oregon Well (Mental Health)\, and Protect Our Winters (Climate Change)\, to name just a few. In 2022\, the band furthered their passion for activism when they launched PTM’s NIGHT OUT initiative – supporting disabled fans requiring ADA access. \nABOUT FRANCES CHANGED MY LIFE: \nIn 2021\, John and Zoe’s daughter\, Frances Gourley was diagnosed with a one in a billion genetic disease called DHDDS. Kids with DHDDS and other rare\, neurodegenerative diseases experience the symptoms of mental and physical decline that are usually associated with diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Their debilitating effects include confusion\, seizures\, uncontrollable movements\, and even dementia in very young kids. \n70% of rare diseases are diagnosed in childhood and more than 90% of rare diseases including Frances’ are without an FDA approved treatment. This means that even with great healthcare plans\, there’s no actual treatment protocol for insurance to cover. It’s up to parents & families to seek out and independently fund research and development of treatments\, medicines\, and therapies they hope will save their kids’ lives. \nJohn and Zoe\, like many other parents of rare diseases\, are in an urgent race against the clock to help save their daughter’s life and prevent further deterioration of her mental and physical capacities while they desperately search for a cure. \nYour support will help them fund research and development of breakthrough therapies that will lead to life-saving treatments for Frances and the 150M kids around the world living with rare diseases. \nFor more info or to make a donation\, visit: https://www.franceschangedmylife.com/. \nABOUT THE MUSIC TIME FOUNDATION:    \nMusic Time began in 1992 as a family owned Record Store in Downtown Beaverton. Over the decades Music Time grew into a community cornerstone destination where people from around the world visited for an experience and connection through music. Bringing together a community with a passion for sound preservation & storytelling while inspiring the next generation of music lovers to keep the music playing for the next\, The Music Time Family is proud to present: Portugal. SUMMARY:Ari Shapiro: Thank You For Listening
DESCRIPTION:One of the most recognized and beloved American storytellers\, Ari Shapiro (NPR\, Pink Martini) returns to the stage with a new cabaret solo show. Hilarious\, moving\, and uplifting\, Thank You For Listening adapts tales from Shapiro’s best-selling memoir The Best Strangers in the World into an evening of stories and songs about the power of listening to bridge divides. \n“I’ve used the phrase Thank you for listening to mean so many things\,” Ari says\, “It’s versatile\, sort of like Shalom\, Aloha\, or Bless Your Heart.” In this show with music direction by Henry Koperski\, Ari shares behind-the-scenes stories of flying on Air Force One and reporting from war zones\, imparts lessons he learned from his fortune teller grandmother\, and recites selected excerpts from his treasured collection of hate mail – all in an exploration of the profound difference that merely listening to one another can have on the world. With songs from Billy Joel\, Paul Simon\, Taylor Swift\, Stephen Sondheim and Rufus Wainwright among many others\, audiences will leave Thank You For Listening feeling more hopeful about the world around them…and may never listen to All Things Considered in quite the same way again. \nAri Shapiro is the award-winning co-host of All Things Considered\, NPR’s landmark nightly news program. As a journalist\, he has reported from above the Arctic Circle and aboard Air Force One. He has covered wars in Iraq\, Ukraine\, and Israel\, and he has filed stories from dozens of countries and most of the 50 states. Before joining the All Things Considered host team in 2015\, he was NPR’s international correspondent based in London. He was previously NPR’s White House Correspondent during the Obama presidency; he embedded with the 2012 presidential campaign of Republican Mitt Romney; and he was NPR’s Justice Correspondent for five years during the George W. Bush administration. Some of his awards include the Silver Gavel\, an Edward R. Murrow Award\, and the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize. \nShapiro is also a frequent guest singer with the “little orchestra” Pink Martini\, from his hometown of Portland\, Oregon. He has recorded on four of the band’s albums\, singing in English\, Hebrew\, Ladino\, Spanish\, Arabic and Armenian. Since his 2009 debut with the band at the Hollywood Bowl\, he has performed in many of the world’s most storied venues\, including The Royal Albert Hall in London\, L’Olympia in Paris\, and Carnegie Hall in New York. He has shared a stage with both Chita and Rita (Rivera and Moreno)\, among other artists. In 2019\, he collaborated with Alan Cumming to create Och and Oy: A Considered Cabaret\, and they continue to tour together. At the Kennedy Center\, he has performed as a guest singer in Taylor Mac’s Holiday Sauce; as a soloist with The Washington Chorus in Igor Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex; and as a featured singer in the Washington Ballet’s original production of The Sun Also Risess. He was also featured in the American debut of the play\, Request Concert\, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In 2016 Ari debuted his original one-man cabaret show\, Homeward\, and has since performed it around the US. \nTwo performances: \nFriday\, December 20 at 2 PM\nFriday\, December 20 at 7:30 PM \n  \n \nSponsored by TriMet

SUMMARY:American Strings: An Evening with Black Belt Eagle Scout
DESCRIPTION:This land runs through Katherine Paul’s blood. And it called to her. In dreams she saw the river\, her ancestors\, and her home. When the land calls\, you listen. And KP found herself far from her ancestral lands during a time of collective trauma\, when the world was wounded and in need of healing. In 2020 she made the journey from Portland back to the Skagit River\, back to the cedar trees that stand tall and shrouded in fog\, back to the tide flats and the mountains\, back to Swinomish.  \nThis is a story of hope\, as it details the joy of returning. Katherine Paul’s journey home wasn’t made alone\, and the songs are crowded with loved ones and relatives\, like a really good party. And as the songs walk us through the land it is important we hover over the images and the beauty\, the moments that mark this album as site specific. The power of this land is woven throughout\, telling the story of narrow waterways\, brush strokes\, salmon stinta\, and above all healing.  \nNow in its seventh year\, PRAx and the College of Liberal Arts present American Strings\, a series of conversations and intimate performances with iconic musicians from the Americas whose perspectives shape our world. Prior guests have included Keb’ Mo’\, Rosanne Cash\, esperanza spalding\, and many more. \nHosted by ethnomusicologist and public historian Kelly Bosworth\, American Strings performances offer audiences the chance to hear artists play and reflect on their practice. In conversation\, artists discuss process\, biography\, and the themes of their work. Conversation is followed by musical performance. Guests typically perform unaccompanied\, but in select cases may appear with their ensembles. \nDr. Kelly Bosworth is Mary Jones and Thomas Hart Horning Assistant Professor of Public History and Ethnomusicology at Oregon State University\, where she teaches courses such as “Social Change and American Popular Music” and “Musical Worlds of the Pacific Northwest.”She works at the intersection of sound\, place\, and belonging. Her research on music/sound/noisein U.S. history delves into the diverse archives of musicmaking\, reconstructing often-silenced histories through the songs and sounds associated with place. Her PhD dissertation (Indiana University\, 2024) explored “The Music of Miracle City: Vanport\, Oregon and the Sonic Imaginaries of Multiracial Democracy.” \nVisit Black Belt Eagle Scout’s website. \nSponsored by John and Kate Stirek.

Join National Geographic Live series to get an up-close look at a world of wild cats you’ve never seen before\, all through Kadur’s captivating images and video. \nSponsored by Carol Streeter & Harold Goldstein

SUMMARY:Gangstagrass
DESCRIPTION:A true example of the belief that we are better together\, Gangstagrass combines great American traditions of bluegrass\, hip-hop\, and beyond to create a whole new musical genre that is more than the sum of its parts. \nGangstagrass is a multi-racial collective of musicians who demolish every preconception you have about country music and hip-hop music. These string pickers and MCs create a shared cultural space for dialogue and connection between folks that usually never intersect. The boundaries are gone and Gangstagrass is out there doing things nobody thought would work but when you hear it you know\, down in your soul\, that it does work. Gangstagrass is here to help us party together with an irresistible blend of America’s rural and urban music traditions. \nIntegrating banjo and fiddle with hip-hop beats and rapping may be something Gangstagrass does for the love of the music\, but it has led them to face a history of racialized genres and deeply ingrained sense of cultural incompatibility. Creating music that turns what some would consider opposite musical styles into a rollicking party that suddenly makes sense\, they found a byproduct of their disregard for traditional sense of genre was that they got people who normally would consider themselves to have nothing in common dancing to the same beat. Forget everything you thought you knew about our cultural divisions: when Gangstagrass starts playing\, those preconceptions are relegated to the dustbin of history. Banjo and fiddle seamlessly meet verbal acrobatics from skilled MCs. High lonesome harmonies flow over block-rockin’ beats. \n“There are a lot more people out there with Jay-Z and Johnny Cash on their playlists than you think\,” says Gangstagrass Mastermind Rench\, who had previously made a name for himself as an in-demand Brooklyn country and hip-hop producer and singer/songwriter. He should know – he’s toured the country and abroad with a band of bluegrass pickers and hip-hop MCs to the delight of standing-room crowds everywhere. Initially known for the Emmy-nominated theme song to the hit FX Network show “Justified”\, the band has become a formidable force in live performance\, touring extensively in the USA\, Canada\, and Europe. \nWhen the band’s fifth studio album No Time For Enemies was released in 2020\, Americana Highways proclaimed Gangstagrass “America’s Band” because they take so much of what’s amazing about this country — the ingenuity\, creativity\, the strength and struggles of such different people to forge a path into the unknown — and distill it into a message of common ground and unity across differences. The album quickly rose to #1 on the Billboard bluegrass chart\, the first time in history that hip-hop MCs achieved that top spot. \nMore recently\, between appearances on America’s Got Talent and PBS’s The Caverns Sessions that made everyone’s highlights list\, and a glowing full-page article in the New York Times print edition headlined “This Is the Music America Needs\,” the band is geared up to get us all dancing on common ground for their national and international tours and their forthcoming full-length album release in the summer of 2024. \n  \n“Gangstagrass fuses string instruments with hip-hop artists\, resulting in arguably the best argument yet for a rap and country music marriage.” —Rolling Stone \n“This Is the Music America Needs.” —The New York Times \n“Gangstagrass may blend bars and banjos\, but their music also feels a little rock n’ roll\, a little rebellious.” —Vice \n  \nSponsored by Todd & Christine Baker
