SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Invisibilia and 1\,000 Moons
DESCRIPTION:The Art Gallery at The Reser\nOpening Reception for Invisibilia and 1\,000 Moons\nFriday\, June 24 | 6-8 pm \nInvisibilia\nJune 22 – August 13\nSandra Honda\, Mei-ling Lee\, and Jefferson Goolsby\nExamining Asian/American identities through photographic journals\, mixed media\, multimedia and performances\, three Oregon artists\, Sandra Honda\, Mei-ling Lee\, and Jefferson Goolsby\, share insights and perceptions of historical and contemporary experiences. Weaving together personal and imagined stories of daily life\, family\, trauma\, and generational grief from mass incarceration of people of Japanese ancestry\, the works portray beautiful and haunting details of loss and displacement. Exploring how people navigate identity in an ever-shifting cultural landscape\, the creative works question beliefs\, and assumptions while offering opportunities to view the world differently. \n1\,000 Moons\nJune 22 – August 13\nEmily Jung Miller – emerging artist\nIn the months after her grandparents’ deaths from COVID\, Emily Jung Miller struggled to stay grounded\, and the understanding of time became distorted and unreal. As a connection to both grandparents\, and to the natural cycles of time\, Miller hand-formed 40 oversize sheets of paper with kelp\, sheet music\, and other materials linked to their history. Cutting the sheets to create a total of 1\,175 collaged ‘moons’\, Miller represented each full moon in her grandmother’s 94 years of life. Stringing the moons together to form a meditative corridor of time\, the installation creates a physical pathway of memories\, allowing viewers a visual and physical path or remembrance for all who have lost\, and recall how many moons we saw together.

With an adventurous spirit and a common vision of peace and understanding\, Somos Amigos encourages us to explore\, dance\, sing and laugh together\, hand-in-hand. \nAs childhood friends growing up in Denver\, Colorado\, Joe Mailander\, and Justin Lansing were always exploring the outdoors. They believe this message can motivate kids to gain a greater respect for the natural world\, their communities\, and themselves. \nThe Okee Dokee Brothers’ nationwide fan base is drawn to their witty lyrics\, strong musicianship\, and unique folk style. By appealing to the musical needs of the entire family and recognizing that kids deserve quality music\, The Okee Dokee Brothers are working full-time to advance the family music genre. \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. SUMMARY:I Am an American: Stories of Exclusion and Belonging - Live
DESCRIPTION:I Am an American: Stories of Exclusion and Belonging – Live \nIn observance of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, we at The Immigrant Story invite you to join us on May 6 for “I Am an American Live.” This event is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition\, with the aim of drawing attention to the historic xenophobia experienced by the Asian American community in Oregon and across the U.S. This history of systemic bias includes policies that have resulted in discrimination\, incarceration\, erasure\, and a recent increase in hate crimes.   \n“I Am an American” will kick off with original pan-Asian music composed for this occasion that combines sounds from Asia with Western harmonies. We have assembled eminent musicians from the Portland area who are trained in a variety of traditions. The performance will represent some of the many strands of Asian musical traditions and showcase what this community brings to America. The music is composed and arranged by Balamurali Balu\, an Indian film music composer.  \nAfter a brief intermission\, storytellers with roots from across Asia will present their lived experiences exploring what it means to belong in America\, even when being partially erased and\, at times\, excluded. These powerful stories will inform us about an important aspect of our past as a state and as a nation and offer an opportunity for reflection on our collective history. \nJoin us for an evening of stories and music from Oregonians\, about the places they built\, the traditions they brought and what it has meant to truly belong in their hometown. \nThis free event is made possible by a generous contribution by Anne Naito-Campbell. Programming has been done with the support of the City of Beaverton and in part by a grant from the Oregon Heritage Commission and Oregon Parks and Recreation.  \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. For this performance – all patrons\, regardless of age\, are required to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend events until further notice. \nThe Reser strongly recommends but does not require guests to wear masks in our building or when attending Reser Presents performances.

SUMMARY:Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana
DESCRIPTION:Internationally Renowned Artists * Flamenco and Spanish Dance \nFlamenco Vivo Carlota Santana Dance Company upholds the purity and traditions of flamenco\, while pushing the boundaries of the art form in new directions. Innovative music\, resounding cante hondo\, exotic movements—the artists’ power and passion has electrified and educated audiences throughout the nation. \nFlamenco Vivo is one of the nation’s premier flamenco and Spanish dance companies. They believe that the universal spirit of flamenco\, a multicultural art form\, has the power to build bridges between cultures and inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds. \nDe la Frontera is a new evening-length work choreographed by José Maldonado and Karen Lugo\, with an original score by Jose Luis de la Paz. De la Frontera is an investigation of life and connectedness. It asks: “What is stronger – what unites us or what separates us?” Despite the barriers we inevitably encounter from the moment we enter this world; we are driven to push beyond these obstacles and seek deeper connection. Using flamenco’s innate ability to embody and express the full range of the human condition\, Maldonado and Lugo probe our emotional boundaries by questioning their very existence. De la Frontera underscores that flamenco does not understand nor accept borders; rather it is our means of connection and expression\, giving the artist power to supersede these limitations.  Hailed by the New York Times for his “bursts of brilliance and uncommon invention\,” Maldonado is the winner of the 2019 Premio Artista Revelación at the XXIII Festival of Jerez\, an award for best up-and-coming artist. His last commission for Flamenco Vivo was heralded as “the rare flamenco group piece that doesn’t stifle the individual spirit.” \nCarlota Santana\, Artistic Director and Founder\, has been designated “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine in recognition of her commitment to creating new works and developing young artists and choreographers. She has dedicated her company to the mission of building bridges between cultures using the universal spirit of flamenco. \nThe company promotes flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage; creates quality new dance works and presents them in major theatrical venues; presents arts education programs that catalyze connections among people of different cultures; and nurtures the next generation of Spanish dance artists and educators. \nThis performance is scheduled to run 80 minutes with no intermission. \nThis event is sponsored by U.S. Bank. \n  \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. For Reser Presents performances – all patrons\, regardless of age\, are required to show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend events until further notice. \nThe Reser strongly recommends but does not require guests to wear masks in our building or when attending Reser Presents performances.

DESCRIPTION:John Scofield presented by PDX Jazz\nFeaturing Vicente Archer\, Jon Cowherd & Josh Dion\nThe PDX Jazz debut show at Patricia Reser Center for the Arts \nScofield’s muse has evolved from guitar standards to post-bop to fusion and back again. (He wears) a gilded robe as the modern messiah of “Terminator jazz.” DownBeat \nAside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar\, John Scofield is a creative artist of an even rarer sort: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent\, rock-solid aesthetic identity. \nA triple Grammy award winning artist with more than 40 recordings to his credit\, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop\, blues\, jazz-funk\, organ jazz\, acoustic chamber jazz\, electronically tinged groove music\, jam band style and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. \nAffectionately called\, Yankee Go Home\, Scofield’s latest project covers Americana / Rock hits and jazzed-out folk songs\, with a few original tunes in the roots / rock / jazz vein. “I’m reconnecting with a lot of my teenaged Rock ‘n Roll roots – naturally colored by my 50 years of Jazz practices\,” Scofield says\, “For me this is a play on we “Yankees” taking up the music of our homeland.” He’s been working on reinterpretations of music from Leonard Bernstein to Neil Young\, Buddy Holly to Stevie Wonder\, and the Grateful Dead. \nScofield is joined by a stellar band featuring Jon Cowherd (keyboardist with Brian Blade Fellowship and Cassandra Wilson among others)\, Vicente Archer (string bass with Robert Glasper\, Louis Hayes\, and Scofield Combo 66\, etc.)\, and drummer Josh Dion. \n“These guys are remarkably versatile\, just as good as it gets when it comes to interactive\, creative playing. We’re exploring rock\, funk\, country\, jazz and free music and having a fantastic time doing it. I’m excited about this collaboration.” \n…an incredibly resourceful display of devices and strategies…he just burned. The New York Times \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. SUMMARY:DakhaBrakha
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian * Unexpected * Trans-National \nHailing from Kyiv\, Ukraine\, DakhaBrakha reflects the fundamental elements of sound\, soul\, and “ethno-chaos” to create a world of unexpected new music. Accompanied by Indian\, Arabic\, African\, Russian\, and Australian traditional instrumentation\, this quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture and ethos. \n“The group mixes everything from punk-pop to traditional Ukrainian songs in cool yet beguiling textures\, often with the close harmonies usually associated with Balkan music. But it’s really the live shows that take DakhaBrakha beyond mere curiosity to utter brilliance.” — NPR \nThe name DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in Ukrainian\, and reflects their resilience and philosophy. Having experimented with Ukrainian folk music\, the band added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music to create their own unique and original style. \nFirmly rooted at the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater\, DakhaBrakha’s musical spectrum is both intimate and riotous\, plumbing the depths of traditional and contemporary roots and rhythms\, and inspiring “cultural and artistic liberation.” DakhaBrakha is a musical gift both unforgettable and rare. \n2 PERFORMANCES\nSunday\, April 17\, 2022\nMonday\, April 18\, 2022 \nEach performance is 80 minutes with no intermission. \nThe safety of our patrons\, artists\, staff\, and volunteers continues to be important to us. Therefore\, we need help to win this fight\, to protect refugees\, to get weapons\, and medical care. \nOur performance is a testament to the crime of Russian troops\, the humanitarian catastrophe they caused\, the horrific deaths of civilians in Kharkiv\, Mariupol\, Chernihiv\, Sumy\, Bucha\, Gostomel and many other parts of the country. \nAt the same time\, our performance is a hymn to our defenders and to the Ukrainian people\, who stand courageously and restrain this evil. \nWe are here today because we are musicians and artists. It is very important for us to feel support and solidarity with Ukraine. The Ukrainian people became victims of Russian aggression and heroes of resistance at the same time. Because slaves cannot defeat free people.” \nLearn more about their story. \nPlease consider donating to these trusted donation organizations: \nhttps://savelife.in.ua/ \nhttps://www.prorizne.org/ \nhttps://ukrainian.foundation/ \n  \nCOVID 19 ATTENDANCE POLICIES
