Black Repertory Theater Company with Carol Maillard\, Louise Robinson and Mie\, Sweet Honey in the Rock has evolved into an international ambassador of a cappella music. The group was founded on the missions of empowerment\, education\, and entertainment\, and has created a deep catalog of beloved socially conscious music rooted in African-American history and culture\, always aspiring to make the world a better place for all. \nA recent review on NPR proclaimed\, “The history of the group… mirrors the effort of the civil rights movement from which it sprung: to raise voices\, to empower individuals and to accomplish together what we cannot accomplish alone.” \nSweet Honey in the Rock has performed all over the world\, from the South African Embassy – as a featured performer at the 2013 National Memorial Service for Nelson Mandela\, to the White House – at the invitation of Michelle Obama to perform a special children’s concert during the first 100 days of her husband’s presidency.

SUMMARY:Pamyua
DESCRIPTION:Pamyua\, Alaska’s most famous Inuit band\, is bringing Indigenous culture and music to the forefront of entertainment. The group’s compelling performances blend traditional Inuit drum/dance melodies and songs of their ancestors with contemporary R&B and soul music\, often referred to as “tribal funk” or “Inuit soul.” The group’s performances honor and share indigenous Inuit cultural traditions and stories of their heritage through music and ceremony passed down through generations. \nPamyua showcases Inuit culture internationally through their music and dance concerts\, sharing their indigenous knowledge and history. Their unique style and sound derive from combining traditional melodies with contemporary vocalizations and instrumentation\, paired with traditional dances and the artful inclusion of symbolic\, native masks. \nFounded by brothers Phillip and Stephen Blanchett\, Pamyua includes Ossie Kairaiuak and frequent guest members. The band is proud to represent indigenous culture\, and believes music and dance create unity. Together\, each member masterfully interprets the Inuit traditions with joy and sincerity. The response to their message is tremendous and the group is a symbol of pride for Alaska’s indigenous people and all who see them perform. \nPamyua’s music and videos are now part of the Library of Congress’ permanent video archive in its American Folklife Center. The Library recently commissioned the group to provide a music video for their special “Homegrown Concert Series.” The concert video and oral history of the group are now permanently accessible to the public online to view anytime for free. \nPamyua is also busy bringing the indigenous sounds of Alaska to television. They made two special appearances performing their original music live on ABC-TV’s recent hit series “Alaska Daily\,” starring Oscar winner Hilary Swank. They scored original music and songs for multiple episodes of Nat Geo’s Emmy-winning docuseries “Life Below Zero: First Alaskans\,” and were asked by the BBC to provide more music for the popular show. The weekly series follows new Alaska Natives as they try to thrive and survive the challenges of today’s climate change in the brutal Alaskan environments\, using the techniques and methods passed down from prior generations. For more information on “Life Below Zero: First Alaskans\,” please visit the press site page. The group also performed and co-wrote the theme to the popular PBS children’s show Molly of Denali and composed original music for Discovery Channel’s Flying Wild Alaska. \nThis Fall\, Pamyua made their debut concert appearance at the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and headlined the first L.A. Global Music Festival. Currently\, they are completing their second leg of a six-state tour on behalf of Arts Midwest\, funded in part by the National Endowment of the Arts\, before more dates in Montana\, New York\, New Mexico\, and more. The group regularly works with world-class musicians from Alaska and Denmark\, and travels the world sharing their unique blend of “Inuit Soul” and cultural harmony\, captivating audiences wherever they perform. \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:Chris Thile
DESCRIPTION:MacArthur Fellow and Grammy Award-winning mandolinist\, singer\, songwriter Chris Thile\, who the Guardian calls “that rare being: an all-round musician who can settle into any style\, from bluegrass to classical\,” and NPR calls a “genre-defying musical genius\,” is a founding member of the critically acclaimed bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek. For four years\, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook\, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike\, giving the listener “one joyous arc\, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty” (New York Times). \nMost recently\, Chris recorded Laysongs\, out June 4\, 2021\, on Nonesuch. The album is his first truly solo album: just Thile\, his voice\, and his mandolin\, on new recordings of six original songs and three covers\, all of which contextualize and banter with his ideas about spirituality. Recorded in a converted upstate New York church during the pandemic\, Laysongs’ centerpiece is the three-part “Salt (in the Wounds) of the Earth\,” which was inspired by C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters. The album also features a song Thile wrote about Dionysus; a performance of the fourth movement of Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin; “God Is Alive\, Magic Is Afoot” based on Buffy Sainte-Marie’s adaptation of a Leonard Cohen poem; a cover of bluegrass legend Hazel Dickens’ “Won’t You Come and Sing for Me\,” and “Ecclesiastes 2:24\,” original instrumental loosely modeled after the Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Partita for Solo Violin in E Major. \nArts For All tickets are available. Location and quantities may vary.\nPlease contact the box office for more information. SUMMARY:Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:Sold Out!\nRhiannon Giddens has made a singular\, iconic career out of stretching her brand of folk music\, with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities\, into just about every field imaginable. A two-time GRAMMY Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and instrumentalist\, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient\, and composer of opera\, ballet\, and film\, Giddens has centered her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased\, and advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art. As Pitchfork once said\, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration”—a journey that has led to NPR naming her one of its 25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century and to American Songwriter calling her “one of the most important musical minds currently walking the planet.” \nFor her highly anticipated third solo studio album\, You’re The One\, out August 18 on Nonesuch Records\, she recruited producer Jack Splash (Kendrick Lamar\, Solange\, Alicia Keys\, Valerie June\, Tank and the Bangas) to help her bring this collection of songs that she’d written over the course of her career—her first album of all originals—to life at Criteria Recording Studios in Miami last November. Together with a band composed of Giddens’s closest musical collaborators from the past decade alongside Miami-based musicians from Splash’s own Rolodex\, and topped off with a horn section making an impressive ten- to twelve-person ensemble\, they drew from the folk music that Giddens knows so deeply and its pop descendants. \nYou’re the One features electric and upright bass\, conga\, Cajun and piano accordions\, guitars\, a Western string section\, and Miami horns\, among other instruments. “I hope that people just hear American music\,” Giddens says. “Blues\, jazz\, Cajun\, country\, gospel\, and rock—it’s all there. I like to be where it meets organically.” \nGiddens also is exploring other mediums and creative possibilities just as actively as she has American musical history. With 1858 replica minstrel banjo in hand\, she wrote the opera Omar with film composer Michael Abels (Get Out\, Us\, Nope) and\, with her partner Francesco Turrisi\, she wrote and performed the music for Black Lucy and the Bard\, which was recorded for PBS’ Great Performances; she has appeared on the ABC hit drama Nashville and throughout Ken Burns’ Country Music series\, also on PBS. Giddens has published children’s books and written and performed music for the soundtrack of Red Dead Redemption II\, one of the best-selling video games of all time. She sang for the Obamas at the White House; is a three-time NPR Tiny Desk Concert alum; and hosts her own show on PBS\, My Music with Rhiannon Giddens\, as well as the Aria Code podcast\, which is produced by New York City’s NPR affiliate station WQXR. \n \nIn the news: \n2023 Pulitzer Prize Winner in Music for Omar \nRead the Smithsonian Magazine‘s feature on Rhiannon Giddens \nRead the Time Magazine feature on Rhiannon Giddens and the Songs of Our Native Daughters project \nRecipient of a 2017 MacArthur Genius Grant \n  \nSponsored by Ronni Lacroute

SUMMARY:Finding Light
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Repertory Singers and Youth Choir join with Portland Youth Philharmonic for a profound reflection on life\, meaning\, and the search for light in the darkest of times with two stunning works for choir and orchestra. \nOregon Repertory Singers concludes their 50th season with Finding Light\, a new work for choir and orchestra by Filipino-American composer Matthew Lyon Hazzard. ORS commissioned Hazzard to write a complement to Lux Aeterna\, commonly considered the most beautiful twentieth-century work for choir and orchestra\, composed by National Medal of Arts winner and beloved Oregonian composer Morten Lauridsen. While Lauridsen’s oratorio approaches the theme of light from a religious perspective\, Hazzard’s new work is the ideal companion piece to conclude the concert\, with poems by young Chinese-American (and Portlandian!) poet Sophia Mautz about finding light in the darkest of times. Camerata from Portland Youth Philharmonic—celebrating their 100th Anniversary—is collaborating on this performance\, along with members of ORS Youth Choir—celebrating 30 years this season! It’s a season of milestones! Join us for this celebration of light\, life\, and longevity!

SUMMARY:GABRIEL KAHANE + PEKKA KUUSISTO: COUNCIL
DESCRIPTION:6:30 – 7pm | Arrive early to see prelude performances featuring Hailey Youn\, Music4Harmony String Quartet\, and the University of Oregon Graduate Sax Quartet. \nAfter nearly a decade of musical friendship\, it seems only fitting that the cult American singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane and iconic Finnish musician Pekka Kuusisto have formalized their collaboration under the moniker Council. Now\, they present an evening of intimate and sonically varied songs and chamber music\, written during several writing retreats in Northern Karelia and Portland\, Oregon. \nWith this new body of work\, Kahane and Kuusisto attempt to locate the universal in the personal and vice versa: here are stories of individual and collective grief; of nostalgia\, adolescence\, and memory-play; of the joy\, wonder\, and perplexity of fatherhood in an era of global instability. As they explore and deepen their own friendship on stage\, these two relentlessly searching artists offer a musical tapestry depicting the complexities of life in the 21st century. \nThe program is rounded out with music by\, among others\, J. S. Bach and Nico Muhly. \nGabriel Kahane—piano\, voice\, electric & acoustic guitars\, harmonium\, loops\nPekka Kuusisto—violin\, voice\, harmonium\, four-string electric violin\, loops\, electronics \nInitially named “In the Garden of the Gift\,” this collaboration is now called “Council.” \nCommissioned by San Francisco Performances\, Chamber Music Northwest\, Schubert Club / Liquid Music\, and 92Y.

SUMMARY:I Am An American Live
DESCRIPTION:I Am An American Live:  Stories of Exclusion and Belonging \nIn observance of Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month\, we at The Immigrant Story invite you to join us on May 11 for our third edition of “I Am An American Live”. This event is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition\, with the aim of drawing attention to the historic xenophobia experienced by the AANHPI community in Oregon and across the U.S. \nAt 7 pm\, the evening program\, “I Am An American”\, begins with four women from Yemen\, Myanmar\, Vietnam and Laos sharing their experiences of what it means to belong in America\, even while at times being excluded. These storytellers from a diversity of backgrounds across Asia tell stories of how our government policies have affected them as individuals. They go on to relate how these experiences in their own lives inspired them to become agents of change. \nAfter a brief intermission\, the evening moves into music with the Minidoka Swing Band—a poignant tribute to the resilience of Japanese Americans imprisoned during World War II. Their joyful sounds of big band music echo through time\, bridging the gap between past and present. Named after the Minidoka camp\, this 17-piece ensemble\, composed of both survivors and descendants\, weaves their stories into melodies that soar even above the confines of barbed wire. \nJoin us for an evening of stories and music from Oregonians\, about the places they built\, the traditions they brought\, and what it has meant to truly belong in their hometown. \nCome early to celebrate our stories with drinks and good company! Join us at 6:00 PM for a delightful Happy Hour in the Reser lobby! Drinks and light snacks will be available for purchase as you mingle with friends and enjoy the exhibits on display in the lobby. Talk with authors and local publishers of several books about the immigrant experience. Meet Elizabeth Mehren\, author of the just-published I Lived To Tell the World. Purchase your book and get your copy signed! \nAuditorium opens at 6:30 PM. \nThis free event is made possible by a generous contribution by Anne Naito-Campbell. SUMMARY:The Mother and Child Union: A Musical\, Poetic\, and Neuroscientific Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Mother and Child Union:  A Musical\, Poetic\, and Neuroscientific Journey \nDr. Larry Sherman\, narrator/host\nNaomi LaViolette\, singer-songwriter\nJulian Kuerti\, conductor\nPortland Chamber Orchestra \nProgram:\nIncluding the music of Paul Simon\, Schumann\, Ravel\, Andrew Lloyd Weber\, Bill Withers\, and more! \nIn this multi-media event\, we celebrate mothers through a combination of classical and modern music\, poetry\, and a fascinating look into all the ways that motherhood changes the brains of both mothers and children throughout their lives. The program will be narrated by author\, public speaker\, and neuroscientist Dr. Larry Sherman\, who will talk about how a mother’s brain changes during pregnancy and after birth\, the neuroscience of the bonding that occurs in the brains of mothers and children\, what happens when mothers sing to their children\, and how a mother’s brain changes with their experiences with their children over the course of their lives. These discussions will be highlighted by music that celebrates motherhood and all of its wonders and challenges. The show will also highlight all of these concepts with readings of the poetry of Ann Taylor\, Nikita Gill\, Margaret Hasse\, and Alice Walker\, as well as visual art that celebrates mothers and their children\, and illustrations that highlight the amazing changes that happen in mothers’ brains and the brains of their children as they bond and grow together. \nPCO is introducing guest conductor Julian Kuerti from Montreal\, Canada who has also arranged one of the selections on the program. In addition\, local favorite Naomi LaViolette will join the orchestra as she sings and performs some of her own music and arrangements. \nThis concert sponsored by the generous support of the Richard B. Siegel Foundation.
