SUMMARY:Danza Azteca Huitzilopochtli
DESCRIPTION:This family matinee features music\, ritual dance\, and colorful regalia from Aztec traditions. \nFrom Mexico\, to Utah\, to California and all throughout the Northwest\, Aztec Dance Captain Jose Carlos leads his family and Woodburn community in the Azteca arts. The danza azteca group\, Huitilocphtli (translated from Nahuatl:“Hummingbird to the left” or “Strength of your will”) shares ancient stories left by their indigenous Mexican ancestors. Dancers spin\, crouch and jump\, shaking their ayoyote rattles to a rhythm and tempo set by the huehuetl drums. Their tall\, giant feathers sway with each movement\, pointing towards the Creator in the sky. \nEach danza is a story of gratitude: do not forget we are made of water\, earth\, air and fire. Each danza is a battle: a test of your discipline and courage\, an incarnation of Tezcatlipoca who teaches the story of your worst enemy: your own fears and self.  In a beautiful fusion of feathers\, beaded regalia\, movement and pre-hispanic music\, the danza azteca takes you on a journey 1\,000 years back to indigenous Mexico. \nSponsored by Jodi Walder

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Rider: Chalk and Soot
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn Rider and Ariadne Greif (soprano) \nCelebrating two decades together\, this is Brooklyn Rider’s homage to their namesake\, “Der Blaue Reiter\,” a pioneering pre-WWI artistic collective that counted among its members Arnold Schoenberg and Wassily Kandinsky. Colin Jacobsen’s song cycle\, Chalk and Soot\, built upon Kandinsky’s Dada-inspired text\, is paired with Schoenberg’s daring Second String Quartet\, both featuring the mesmerizing American singer\, Ariadne Greif. And in a second installment of 2014’s highly celebrated Brooklyn Rider Almanac\, four newly commissioned works – co-commissioned by The Reser – complete the experience with works by: Clarice Assad\, Gabriel Kahane\, Giovanni Solima and Tyshawn Sorey. \nAriadne Greif\, praised for her “luminous\, expressive voice”\, “searing top notes”\, and “dusky Depths” (NYTimes)\, enjoyed a casual child career as a “boy” soprano at the LA Opera\, eventually making an adult debut singing Lutoslawski’s Chantefleurs et Chantefables with the American Symphony Orchestra. She starred in operas ranging from Donizetti’s Elixir of Love with The Orlando Philharmonic\, to Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias at the Aldeburgh Festival\, and Atthis\, by G.F. Haas\, which the NY Times called “one of the most searingly painful and revealing operatic performances in recent times.” \nShe performed with William Kentridge in the Oslo Opera House\, The Luxembourg Philharmonic\, Berkeley Cal Performances\, and Performa in his production of the Dada masterpiece Ursonate\, created two projects of her own called Bird Party and Eleven Wild Geese commissioned by The Ultima Festival in Norway\, and a film of We Need To Talk\, a monodrama by Caroline Shaw and Anne Carson for Opera Philadelphia. Collaborations include JACK Quartet\, Gabe Kahane\, Sofia Jernberg\, Pekka Kuusisto\, The Knights\, over three hundred concerts on tour with Ensemble Mélange\, at The Ojai Festival\, Park Avenue Armory\, Carnegie Hall\, Sydney Chamber Opera\, The Sarasota Opera House\, and The Meidan Festival in Helsinki. Recent highlights include Alyssa Weinberg’s monodrama Isola with Long Beach Opera\, singing and dancing as Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls with Opera Saratoga\, and The Fall of Rome with AMOC\, and new albums with Raven Chacon and Kate Soper. Ariadne has premiered upwards of thirty new operas and more than a hundred new chamber works. \nWith their gripping performance style and unquenchable appetite for musical adventure\, Brooklyn Rider has carved a singular space in the world of string quartets over their fifteen-year history. Defining the string quartet as a medium with deep historic roots and endless possibility for invention\, they find equal inspiration in musical languages ranging from late Beethoven to Persian classical music to American roots music to the endlessly varied voices of living composers. \nProgram:\nBrooklyn Rider & Ariadne Greif\nChalk and Soot \nFour Quartets – Giovanni Sollima \nUntitled – Tyshawn Sorey \nAmerican Studies – Gabriel Kahane \nString Quartet No 2* – Arnold Schoenberg \nIntermission \nChalk and Soot* – Colin Jacobsen \n*with Ariadne Greif\, soprano \nSponsored by Ronni Lacroute

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Demo: Sandra Honda & Tien-chu Loh
DESCRIPTION:FREE and open to the public with reserved ticket. \nEmbodying Paper: Artistic Process and Identity by Sandra Honda (she/her) \nHear from the artist herself as Sandra Honda explores the use of paper as substrate and medium to dig into her Japanese American identity. Honda discusses the conceptual journey that led her to creating “Love Heals”\, which appears in Infinite Possibilities. \nWet-mounting Demonstration by Tien-chu Loh (he/him) \nWanting to find alternative ways to display drawings or paintings? Infinite Possibilities artist\, Tien-chu Loh will demonstrate a wet-mounting technique using Xuan paper\, a type of paper originating in ancient China. Wet-mounting is the traditional process of gluing a backing to a painting. This practice dates to the Han Dynasty (202 BC to 220 AD) where paper fibers relax when wet\, and shrink and tighten when dried. Join Loh as he brings into focus the vital and necessary step for properly framing and presenting Xuan paper works. \n  \nLearn more about Infinite Possibilities. \nImage: detail of Rapture Birdsongs by Sandra Honda\n  \n\n  \nSandra Honda Bio: \nSandra Honda (she/her) is a Japanese American visual artist and writer based on Kalapuyan land now known as Eugene\, Oregon. She works to elevate less heard voices and stories by invoking historical\, contemporary and social narratives. In 2018\, she left her career as a speechwriter and scientist to redirect her focus toward using art and writing to interrogate what it means to be Asian and American in today’s America. Informed by the Japanese American experience of ethnically-based mass incarceration during World War II\, her drawings\, paintings\, digital works\, assemblages\, and installations draw a historical throughline of anti-Asian activities in the U.S. from the 1800s to today. In 2022\, she initiated a social practice focused on climate change in which she broadened her toolkit to include sculpture. This climate change-related work draws on her career addressing climate\, ocean and science policy through her speechwriting work. \nShe often collaborates with Taiwanese composer and sound designer Mei-ling Lee to create interactive installations enriched by sound and lighting environments. Since moving to Eugene in 2018\, Honda has exhibited (selected) in the Mayor’s Art Show (Eugene\, 2020)\, Arts Northwest Biennial (Roseburg\, 2021)\, Eugene’s Windowfront Exhibition (2022)\, Maude Kerns Art Center (Eugene\, 2022)\, The Reser Center for the Arts (Beaverton\, 2022)\, the University of Oregon Adele McMillan Gallery (EMU\, 2023) and Walters Cultural Arts Center (Hillsboro\, 2023). She is a recipient of grants from the Oregon Arts Commission (2022) and Lane County Cultural Commission (2024). She was the first artist selected for two consecutive years of residency at Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts and Agriculture (2022\, 2023). \nHonda was born and raised in Chicago\, Illinois\, where her family relocated after their incarceration in America’s concentration camps (Pinedale\, Tule Lake\, and Minidoka) during World War II. \n  \nTien-chu Loh Bio: \nTien-chu (he/him) is a retired pharmacist whose hobbies include Chinese Brush Calligraphy and Chinese Brush Painting. Painting is his Prozac. He paints in the Xieyi genre and exclusively on various kinds of Xuan paper. He often expands his style beyond the classical interpretation of Chinese brush painting. He paints in the spirit of an old Chinese saying\, “There should be poetry in a painting\, and poetry should be like a painting.” His works have appeared in juried shows around town and in places like Pendleton\, Roseburg and online shows in California. Some of his works have found a home at George Fox University and the City of Hillsboro Public Art Archive.

SUMMARY:American Strings: An Evening with Yasmin Williams
DESCRIPTION:Yasmin Williams is an innovative guitarist and composer known for her unique compositional approach and expansive instrumental style. Her latest album Acadia\, released on Nonesuch Records\, showcases her evolution from solo performer to collaborative artist\, featuring partnerships with notable musicians like Aoife O’Donovan and Immanuel Wilkins. \nWilliams’ distinctive creative process involves “ruminating” on single notes until compositions naturally emerge. Beyond traditional fingerpicked guitar\, she demonstrates mastery of multiple instruments including kora\, harp guitar\, banjo\, and electric guitar. Her music\, while rooted in folk traditions\, transcends conventional structures to incorporate elements of progressive rock and experimental composition. \nNow in its seventh year\, PRAx and the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University present American Strings\, a series of conversations and intimate performances with iconic musicians from the Americas whose perspectives shape our world. Prior guests have included Keb’ Mo’\, Rosanne Cash\, esperanza spalding\, and many more. \nHosted by ethnomusicologist and public historian Kelly Bosworth\, American Strings performances offer audiences the chance to hear artists play and reflect on their practice. In conversation\, artists discuss process\, biography\, and the themes of their work. Conversation is followed by musical performance. Guests typically perform unaccompanied\, but in select cases may appear with their ensembles. \nDr. Kelly Bosworth is Mary Jones and Thomas Hart Horning Assistant Professor of Public History and Ethnomusicology at Oregon State University\, where she teaches courses such as “Social Change and American Popular Music” and “Musical Worlds of the Pacific Northwest.”She works at the intersection of sound\, place\, and belonging. Her research on music/sound/noisein U.S. history delves into the diverse archives of musicmaking\, reconstructing often-silenced histories through the songs and sounds associated with place. Her PhD dissertation (Indiana University\, 2024) explored “The Music of Miracle City: Vanport\, Oregon and the Sonic Imaginaries of Multiracial Democracy.”

SUMMARY:Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana: Quinto Element
DESCRIPTION:Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana presents Quinto Elemento (Fifth Element)\, a new work by internationally acclaimed flamenco dancer-choreographer Patricia Guerrero set to an original score of live music by Francis Gómez. Guerrero will explore the fifth element of the earth: ether\, that which we do not see yet is ever-present. The essence that makes up the space around us. Hailed as a master of tradition who dares to deconstruct the art form\, Guerrero draws on her deep knowledge of traditional flamenco but pushes past the restriction of its rules. In doing so\, she seeks to extract the essence of flamenco itself\, its invisible fifth element\, and make it tangible to audiences. \nQUINTO ELEMENTO will be characterized by a strange and peculiar beauty\, as Guerrero operates beyond what is considered aesthetically correct in an art form that highly values exactitude. Guerrero instead embraces chaos through choreography\, building from flamenco’s expressive movement language while venturing beyond its current aesthetic bounds. \nSponsored by Reser Family Foundation

SUMMARY:Johannes Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem
DESCRIPTION:The 150 musicians of Portland Choir & Orchestra have been delighting audiences with inspiring choral and orchestral music for 20 years. Thousands attend PCO’s wide variety of concert programs including the Celebration of Christmas\, masterworks for choir and orchestra based on sacred texts\, and patriotic and pops-style concerts that celebrate humankind’s rich heritage of family\, music\, faith\, and liberty. \nPCO has performed the National Anthem at Trail Blazer games and has performed with the Newport Symphony Orchestra\, the Willamette Falls Symphony\, and with national stars like Grammy-nominated violinist Jenny Oaks Baker\, Tabernacle Choir Organist Clay Christiansen\, and Broadway actor Dallyn Vail Bayles. Local celebrities such as Bill Schonely\, Ray Summers\, and Edmund Stone have also collaborated with PCO. \nEnjoying a reputation of offering some of the finest\, most uplifting choral and orchestral concerts in the greater Portland area\, PCO is led by Artistic Director\, Dr. David Thomas and Dr. Edward Higgins\, Orchestra Director. \nThe Brahms’ Requiem\, as it is commonly known\, dominates the requiem category and is Johannes Brahms’ most celebrated work. It is a large-scale masterpiece for chorus\, orchestra\, and soloists in seven movements and will feature guest artists Stacey Murdock as baritone and Madison Barton-Holloway as soprano. Instead of the traditional Latin text recited at funerals and used by composers for centuries\, Brahms chose words that offer consolation for the living. He set psalms and other passages from the Bible leaving out all forms of dogma. It became an enormous success and changed his life. \nSponsored by: Paul Hart in loving tribute of his late wife\, Jan Jacobsen\, local artist. \nTWO PERFORMANCES\nApril 26\, 2025 at 2 PM\nApril 26\, 2025 at 7 PM

SUMMARY:Old Wine in New Bottles
DESCRIPTION:Old Wine in New Bottles explores the evolution of musical traditions\, much like the progression of Old and New World wine styles. This program celebrates how cherished classics are reinterpreted\, creating fresh experiences that honor their roots while embracing innovation. \nThe evening begins with Gordon Jacob’s Old Wine in New Bottles\, a playful reimagining of traditional English folk melodies\, blending historical charm with modern orchestration. Johann Strauss’s Wein\, Weib\, und Gesang (Wine\, Women\, and Song)\, in a lively wind ensemble arrangement by Douglas Rossi\, follows\, evoking the grandeur and elegance of Old World Viennese tradition. The first half closes with Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Bacchanale\, a swirling\, seductive musical scene from the opera Samson et Dalila. \nThe second half opens with Holst’s First Suite in E-flat\, a masterpiece of British band music that draws from the rich traditions of orchestral writing. Dello Joio’s Variants on a Medieval Tune transforms a 13th-century melody into a kaleidoscope of styles\, bridging past and present. Julie Giroux’s Fantasy in French adds a dash of modern color\, infused with French charm. The program concludes with Dvořák’s Finale from New World Symphony\, a work inspired by his journey to America\, where Old World symphonic traditions meet New World influences\, much like the evolution of wine-making across continents. \n“Old Wine in New Bottles” invites listeners to savor a journey through musical evolution\, toasting the fusion of history and innovation that keeps traditions alive and vibrant.

SUMMARY:First Friday Demo & Children's Day Installation: Menka Desai-Crawford & Sandra Honda
DESCRIPTION:FREE & Open to the public (no tickets necessary) \nMenka Desai-Crawford (she/her) will be demonstrating how she embroiders on handmade paper with threads and beads to create depth in a painting. Desai-Crawford will also have her bead and threads collection\, tools\, and some of her finished artworks for everyone to enjoy. \nInteractive Installation \nCelebrate Children’s Day with us on First Friday in May! Every year\, this Japanese holiday brings wishes of health and happiness to all children. Come add a tealight to help us grow the word “love” one light at a time on the festive Love Over Hate: For Our Children floorcloth! Make and take home a print of a koi (carp)\, Japanese doll\, special sweet or another symbol of the holiday. \nLove Over Hate: For Our Children is an interactive floor installation developed by Japanese American artist Sandra Honda (she/her) in collaboration with Eugene Printmakers\, a nonprofit\, community-oriented arts organization committed to providing education and opportunities in printmaking\, letterpress\, and book arts. The work brings attention to intention in choosing love over hate in our daily lives. \nLearn more about Infinite Possibilities. \nImage: detail of Lavender Fields by Menka Desai-Crawford\n  \n\n  \nMenka Desai-Crawford Bio: \nMenka Desai-Crawford (she/her) is an Architect turned full-time Artist\, currently living in Portland\, Oregon and the face behind a small art business called Mantis Shrimp Monocles. She has a bachelor’s in architecture degree from Mumbai\, India and a master’s in urban design degree from Pratt Institute\, New York. She has been working as an Artist since 2018 and has sold and shipped hundreds of artworks worldwide. Raised in India\, Menka has strong ties to her culture which she tries to showcase in her works. She primarily works with alcohol inks\, gouache and embroidery on handmade paper. She also makes her own custom float frame and fine art prints in her home studio. \nIn May 2022\, she was a part of a group show in Alberta Street Gallery highlighting the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. In April 2023\, she had her first solo show at Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland\, Oregon where she exhibited 9 botanical mixed media works. The theme was to document the spring lowers that were blooming in the garden at the moment\, and she made small maps to go with each painting to make the exhibit more interactive. In Fall 2023\, two of her artworks were selected to be a part of City of Portland’s ‘Visual Chronicle of Portland’ Collection. \nShe loves a good composition in everything – whether in paper\, in spaces or in imagination and she tries to encase that in her very colorful depictions of birds\, plants\, sea life\, and landscapes. \n  \nSandra Honda Bio: \nSandra Honda (she/her) is a Japanese American visual artist and writer based on Kalapuyan land now known as Eugene\, Oregon.

SUMMARY:Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Sleeping Beauty is a beautiful ballet about the power of love\, dreams\, and exploration\, which has been delighting audiences on the world’s stages for more than 100 years. The three-act ballet extravaganza is based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale of the same name. \nAll of the finest elements were thought of in this production down to the smallest detail\, from the general atmosphere of the French court of King Louis XIV to the enchanting music and exquisite classical choreography. The ballet is full of a variety of dances\, variations of soloists\, sensual duets\, and spectacular scenes with the corps de ballet. A special treat is given by the amazing\, colorful dances of the fairies: The Lilac Fairy and fairies of Tenderness\, Liveliness\, Generosity\, Courage\, and Serenity\, who\, according to the storyline\, endow the newborn girl with their gifts. This performance became a serious event in the history of musical and choreographic art in the end of the 19th century. Since then\, the classical ballet has been a treasure in the repertoire of almost all major theaters of the world. \n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Demo: Helen Liu
DESCRIPTION:Helen Liu (she/her) will speak about her large new works on paper in Chinese ink and homegrown indigo. She will also talk about the growing and harvesting of Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) and the pigment extraction process. Attendees will get to enjoy seeds that Liu will share with gardeners interested in growing their own indigo! \nFREE & Open to the public with a reserved ticket. This event takes place in The Lab. \nLearn more about Infinite Possibilities. \nImage: detail of Deconstructed Calligraphy by Helen Liu \nHelen Liu Bio: \nHelen Liu (she/her) was born in Taiwan and raised on a chicken farm in the southern part of the island. Since leaving the country in the early 70’s with her parents\, she lived in Jakarta and Bangkok and eventually came to study at the University of Oregon. After receiving her BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in painting and graphic design\, Helen worked in advertising firms in Portland and Eugene. Later\, after her daughter was born\, she worked from home and began to explore her own art. \nOver time\, Helen Hui-Ling Liu\, the immigrant from Taiwan\, became a naturalized citizen of the United States\, a world citizen\, a gardener\, and a strong advocate for composting. She grew increasingly concerned about the state the environment. In 2014 American Luminosity was the first large-scale work using her own household plastic waste and non-recyclable bags from local coSee shops. Several large works followed with the biggest one measuring 40ft x 12ft. Plastic Waste to Art Quilt (2021) was funded in part by the Springfield Arts Commission and displayed at the Academy of Arts and Academics in downtown Springfield during Earth Day week. \nTrips to Japan in 2019-2020 opened Helen’s eyes to natural indigo and the long Japanese tradition of working with this blue dye. Beginning in 2021\, she started growing Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria)\, learning how to harvest and extract the pigment. She feels humbled by this magical plant and the ancient peoples around the world who worked with it\, weaving and making textiles that survived the millennia. Helen’s art practice was changed by Persicaria tinctoria and the wondrous color that it yields. Today\, she continues to grow this beautiful ancient plant\, producing a wondrous blue pigment that she uses in her art.
