SUMMARY:I Am An American Live: Stories of Exclusion and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:In observance of Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month\, we at The Immigrant Story invite you to join us on May 24 for our fourth edition of “I Am An American Live.” This event is part of the programming by the Oregon Rises Above Hate coalition\, with the aim of drawing attention to the historic xenophobia experienced by the AANHPI community in Oregon and across the U.S. \nAt 7 pm\, the evening program\, “I Am An American Live\,” begins with four storytellers from Vietnam\, Nepal\, Malaysia and Afghanistan sharing their experiences of what it means to belong in America\, even while at times being excluded. These storytellers\, from diverse backgrounds across Asia\, reveal how their lived experiences empowered them to drive change for themselves and their communities. \nFollowing a brief intermission\, the evening will continue with a melodious vocal performance by Shivani Joshi. She’ll treat us to a soulful performance of traditional Ghazals and Qawwalis from South Asia. Joining Joshi will be a talented ensemble of eight musicians\, each with their own unique expertise\, blending Sufi sounds with Western harmonies. This remarkable fusion is the result of a collaborative effort between Shivani Joshi (vocals)\, Joseph Harchanko (strings)\, and Fiaindratovo (Mimy) Manavihare (percussion). Together\, they’ll create an unforgettable experience. \nJoin us for an evening of stories and music from Oregonians\, about the places they built\, the traditions they brought\, and what it has meant to belong in their hometown. \nJoin us for a Special Pre-Event Happy Hour! \nCome early and celebrate our stories with drinks and great company! Join us at 6:00 pm in The Reser lobby for a delightful Happy Hour. Drinks and light snacks will be available for purchase. \n\nMeet Elizabeth Mehren\, author of I Lived to Tell the World—purchase a copy of her book and get it signed!\nConnect with authors and local publishers sharing stories about the immigrant experience.\nCommemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War with art\, information tables\, and special events.\n\n  \nDon’t miss this chance to mingle\, learn\, and celebrate before the main event begins. \nThis free event is made possible by a generous contribution by Anne Naito-Campbell. Additional funds for Programming have been provided by the City of Beaverton. \nThis project is supported in part by a grant from the Oregon Heritage Commission\, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Additional funding has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oregon Cultural Development Grant.

SUMMARY:Forest Grove Mariachi Tradición 10th Anniversary Celebration feat. Las Cafeteras
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening as we celebrate Mariachi Tradición’s 10th Anniversary—a decade of music\, culture\, and community. Additionally\, the group has been featured as performers at the Portland Jazz Festival\, the Pickathon Festival\, as well as the  Festiba Mariachi Festival and the Tucson International Mariachi Conference. \nTo mark this special anniversary milestone\, we are thrilled to welcome the incredible Las Cafeteras—an East-LA band that has toured the world with their unique blend of traditional folk\, Afro-Mexican rhythms & cumbia\, all inspired by their immersion in Son jarocho & zapateado dance. The evening will also feature collaborations with Ballet Folklorico Mexico en la Piel Academia\, students from the FGSD mariachi program and FGMT alumni. SUMMARY:It’s Our Time
DESCRIPTION:In its inaugural concert\, the Portland Sage Singers presents an evening of music and stories extolling the simple\, and not so simple\, joys of elderhood. The concert opens with Stephen Sondheim’s powerful anthem\, “Our Time” from Merrily We Roll Along. From there\, the chorus of singers aged 55 and above\, whisks the audience on a journey of shared emotions as varied as the music that ranges from J.S. Bach to Whitney Houston. \nIf laughter is the best medicine\, there will be lots of medicine including a new commissioned piece from Los Angeles composer Dave Volpe. The piece titled “Organ Recital\,” shares the maladies reserved for folks of a certain age. “Senior Psalm” by composer Daniel Gawthrop will also have its world premiere. \nSongs of empowerment include Iconic singer/songwriter Holly Near’s powerful “I Ain’t Afraid” and Labi Siffre’s “Something Inside So Strong.” \nThe chorus sings about coming out about our love in the stunning love song\, “Secret Love” from Calamity Jane and the stunning “in Whatever Time We Have” from Stephen Schwartz’ Children of Eden. The evening ends proudly proclaiming “We Are Survivors” in a rousing finale by Broadway composer Andrew Lippa from Unbreakable. There will be many surprises along the way. The message from Portland Sage Singers is clear. It’s not just “Our Time\,” but high time Portland had a chorus consisting of Q+ Elders and Allies. It will be an auspicious debut. \n80 minutes\, no intermission.\nArtistic Director Dr. Timothy Seelig
