SUMMARY:Tetiana Shafran\, Piano
DESCRIPTION:“Courage\, ardor\, lasting impressions” \n  \nDescribed as a “rare combination of clarity and power” (AllMusic Guide)\, Tetiana Shafran has won over 20 international competitions and gained the accolades of the classical music world. The young Ukrainian star will make her PPI debut\, showcasing her sublime gift through a program that weaves together fervor and legacy. \nA melancholic prelude by Scriabin will inaugurate the evening\, followed by Busoni’s Variations and Fugue on Chopin’s C Minor Prelude. Soon after\, Shafran will sway her listeners to tears with Mykola Lysenko’s mournful Elegie. Following these intimate pieces are nods to virtuosity with Liszt’s Ballade No. 2 and his arrangement of Paganini’s epochal “La campanella.” Musicality will ripple from Shafran’s fingers as she brings the lush Sonatine by Ravel and impassioned crowd favorite Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty suite to life. \nSCRIABIN\nPrelude and Nocturne for the left hand\, op. 9 \nFERRUCIO BUSONI\nVariations and Fugue on Chopin’s Prelude in C minor \nMYKOLA LYSENKO\nElegy \nLISZT\nBallade No. 2 \nNICCOLÒ PAGANINI\, arr. SUMMARY:Opening Night: Squirrel Nut Zippers
DESCRIPTION:The Squirrel Nut Zippers Present Jazz from the Back O’ Town: A Musical Journey to the Birthplace of Jazz in 1920s New Orleans. \nThe Squirrel Nut Zippers’ Jazz from the Back ‘O Town is an intriguing look at the birth of Jazz\, focused on the prodigious musical neighborhood of New Orleans called Back O’ Town. \nThe Squirrel Nut Zippers present a delightful view into a magical era of the late 19th century through the Roaring 20s in New Orleans’ Back O’ Town neighborhood. Performing reverent yet exciting renditions of such seminal NOLA classics as Jelly Roll Morton’s “Animule Ball\,” Louis Armstrong’s “Back O’ Town Blues\,” the Zippers also perform favorites from their own catalog adapted and arranged to more closely echo the sounds of 1920s New Orleans. \nThroughout the show\, the band offers humorous\, insightful musings on both the musical history of one of America’s most fascinating cities and the stories and inspirations behind many of the Zippers’ most beloved songs. Performed in era appropriate attire\, but not so much a period piece as a living peek-behind-the-curtain of inspiration and celebration. \nThe Platinum selling group has sold over three million albums to-date\, with their watershed album\, Hot (1996)\, making them a household name. Recorded in the heat of New Orleans\, fueled by a smoldering mix of booze and a youthful hunger to unlock the secrets of old-world jazz\, this pivotal release was just the beginning for the band. \nSince then\, SNZ has unveiled such hits as Beasts Of Burgundy (2018)\, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart\, and Christmas Caravan (1998)\, which went on to sell a quarter of a million copies and reach #12 on the Billboard Holiday Albums chart. \nTheir most recent record Lost Songs of Doc Souchon debuted in late 2020. It featured 10 tracks – a combination of newly-penned Zippers songs\, along with a few tunes from past times – and has received acclaim from fans and critics alike. \nOpening Night Party\nAs part of The Reser’s Opening Night Celebration\, we are hosting an Opening Night Party. These tickets are limited\, and we anticipate them going quickly. The $75 event ticket will only include the 6pm Opening Night Party in The Lab prior to the Squirrel Nut Zippers performance\, including heavy hors d’oeuvres & beverages. \nPurchase your Opening Night Party tickets HERE. \n \nSponsored by U.S. Bank

SUMMARY:The Kingston Trio
DESCRIPTION:Fans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can re-discover their timeless music all over again\, after a forced nearly two-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions as the group returns to their national tour. All three current members\, Mike Marvin\, Tim Gorelangton and Buddy Woodward have intrinsic links to and experience with the original group: Mike is the adopted son of founding member Nick Reynolds\, who was also his musical mentor; Tim\, a close friend since boyhood\, is one of the few musicians outside the Trio who has recorded with Nick Reynolds; and Buddy\, who has performed with longtime Kingston Trio member George Grove. Many of their personal memories recall the iconic trio’s performances and journey as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture – and the top of the music charts.  They’ll perform such timeless classics “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” and “Tom Dooley”. \n \nSponsored by Andy & Nancy Bryant

SUMMARY:Duo Amal\, 2 Pianos w/ Yaron Kohlberg & Bishara Haroni
DESCRIPTION:“Hope\, poetry\, ancient longing.” \nRecognized for their “soulful and dynamic” musicality\, Duo Amal has captivated audiences worldwide since bursting onto the scene in 2014. The Israeli-Palestinian pianists Yaron Kohlberg and Bishara Haroni epitomize the true meaning of Amal (hope\, in Arabic). The energetic duo has curated a program of works embodying a collective dream of hope swirled in poetry and longing. \nThe recital will begin with Schubert’s fantasy\, which displays melancholic longing\, followed by a potpourri of musical styles that pepper Milhaud’s Scaramouche. The Adagio from Khachaturian’s ballet Spartacus taps into a vivid love scene set in ancient Greece\, while Shostakovich’s concertino displays the dissonance between the prophetic and the serene. Tying it all together is Rachmaninoff’s Suite No. 1\, each movement painting musical brushstrokes from a peaceful and intimate barcarolle to a bombastic celebration. \nSCHUBERT\nFantasy for Four Hands\, D. 940 \nMILHAUD\nScaramouche \nARAM KHACHATURIAN\nAdagio from Spartacus Sabre Dance \nSHOSTAKOVICH\nConcertino \nRACHMANINOV\nSuite No. 1

SUMMARY:Philip Glass' Dracula conducted by Michael Riesman
DESCRIPTION:Don your cape and fangs and celebrate Halloween Eve with the classic 1931 film Dracula\, starring Béla Lugosi\, accompanied by a live performance of Philip Glass’s original score. Philip Glass Ensemble Music Director Michael Riesman leads Third Angle in this hypnotic soundtrack for string quartet and two grand pianos. \nAlthough there have been numerous screen versions of Bram Stoker’s classic tale\, none is more enduring than this 1931 original. Towering ominously among the shadows of the Carpathian Mountains\, Castle Dracula strikes fear into the hearts of the Transylvanian villagers below. Bela Lugosi\, starring as the screen’s most popular vampire Count Dracula\, together with horror specialist Director Tod Browning\, create the film’s eerie and chilling mood. Dracula remains a masterpiece not only of the genre\, but for all time. \nThe original film was released with no musical soundtrack apart from a brief excerpt of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake used in the opening credits and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger during a scene at the opera. In 1998 Philip Glass was tasked with creating a new score for the re-release of the film which was premiered by the Kronos Quartet and Michael Riesman. \nEnsemble:\nMichael Reisman\, guest director/piano\nIan Scarfe\, piano\nGreg Ewer\, violin\nLing Ling Huang\, violin\nWendy Richman\, viola\nValdine Ritchie Mishkin\, cello \nTwo shows! \nOctober 30\, 2024 at 7 PM\nOctober 30\, 2024 at 9 PM \n  \n \nSponsored by Hillsboro Hops
