SUMMARY:Calexico
DESCRIPTION:Founded in Tucson\, Arizona\, by guitarist/singer Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino\, the band first emerged to widespread acclaim in the mid-1990s with a string of arresting\, evocative records that blurred the lines between their roots\, rock\, and Latin influences. The Washington Post hailed the band’s live show as “near-flawless\,” while The Chicago Tribune lauded the “vibrant” energy and “compelling conviction” of their performances\, and WNYC marveled at the group’s ability to both “roar like Sonic Youth [and] whisper like Elliott Smith” onstage. \nSponsored by Bank of America

SUMMARY:Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Sleeping Beauty is a beautiful ballet about the power of love\, dreams\, and exploration\, which has been delighting audiences on the world’s stages for more than 100 years. The three-act ballet extravaganza is based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale of the same name. \nAll of the finest elements were thought of in this production down to the smallest detail\, from the general atmosphere of the French court of King Louis XIV to the enchanting music and exquisite classical choreography. The ballet is full of a variety of dances\, variations of soloists\, sensual duets\, and spectacular scenes with the corps de ballet. A special treat is given by the amazing\, colorful dances of the fairies: The Lilac Fairy and fairies of Tenderness\, Liveliness\, Generosity\, Courage\, and Serenity\, who\, according to the storyline\, endow the newborn girl with their gifts. This performance became a serious event in the history of musical and choreographic art in the end of the 19th century. Since then\, the classical ballet has been a treasure in the repertoire of almost all major theaters of the world. \n

DESCRIPTION:FREE & Open to the public with a reserved ticket. This event takes place in The Lab. \nJoin Sabina Haque for an artist talk exploring (UN) Belonging\, her immersive installation that delves into emotional\, political\, and physical boundaries. Through projected maps\, life-size ink drawings\, and live performances\, Haque invites viewers to experience the spaces between inclusion and exclusion. SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Demo: Helen Liu
DESCRIPTION:Helen Liu (she/her) will speak about her large new works on paper in Chinese ink and homegrown indigo. She will also talk about the growing and harvesting of Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) and the pigment extraction process. Attendees will get to enjoy seeds that Liu will share with gardeners interested in growing their own indigo! \nFREE & Open to the public with a reserved ticket. This event takes place in The Lab. \nLearn more about Infinite Possibilities. \nImage: detail of Deconstructed Calligraphy by Helen Liu \nHelen Liu Bio: \nHelen Liu (she/her) was born in Taiwan and raised on a chicken farm in the southern part of the island. Since leaving the country in the early 70’s with her parents\, she lived in Jakarta and Bangkok and eventually came to study at the University of Oregon. After receiving her BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in painting and graphic design\, Helen worked in advertising firms in Portland and Eugene. Later\, after her daughter was born\, she worked from home and began to explore her own art. \nOver time\, Helen Hui-Ling Liu\, the immigrant from Taiwan\, became a naturalized citizen of the United States\, a world citizen\, a gardener\, and a strong advocate for composting. She grew increasingly concerned about the state the environment. In 2014 American Luminosity was the first large-scale work using her own household plastic waste and non-recyclable bags from local coSee shops. Several large works followed with the biggest one measuring 40ft x 12ft. Plastic Waste to Art Quilt (2021) was funded in part by the Springfield Arts Commission and displayed at the Academy of Arts and Academics in downtown Springfield during Earth Day week. \nTrips to Japan in 2019-2020 opened Helen’s eyes to natural indigo and the long Japanese tradition of working with this blue dye. Beginning in 2021\, she started growing Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria)\, learning how to harvest and extract the pigment. She feels humbled by this magical plant and the ancient peoples around the world who worked with it\, weaving and making textiles that survived the millennia. Helen’s art practice was changed by Persicaria tinctoria and the wondrous color that it yields. Today\, she continues to grow this beautiful ancient plant\, producing a wondrous blue pigment that she uses in her art.

SUMMARY:Forest Grove Mariachi Tradición 10th Anniversary Celebration feat. Las Cafeteras
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening as we celebrate Mariachi Tradición’s 10th Anniversary—a decade of music\, culture\, and community. Founded in 2015 by Lesslie Nuñez in the Forest Grove School District\, this dynamic\, audition-based Forest Grove High School ensemble has become a cherished group in the Portland Metropolitan Area. Featuring violins\, trumpets\, guitars\, vihuela\, guitarron\, harp\, and powerful vocals\, Mariachi Tradición showcases the talent and dedication of its student musicians. \nAs the program has grown over the years\, Mariachi Tradición has had the honor of being invited to be the opening act for Latin Grammy Award-winning artists such as La Santa Cecilia\, Mariachi Flor de Toloache\, and Mariachi Los Camperos on some of the most prestigious stages in Oregon. Additionally\, the group has been featured as performers at the Portland Jazz Festival\, the Pickathon Festival\, as well as the  Festiba Mariachi Festival and the Tucson International Mariachi Conference. \nTo mark this special anniversary milestone\, we are thrilled to welcome the incredible Las Cafeteras—an East-LA band that has toured the world with their unique blend of traditional folk\, Afro-Mexican rhythms & cumbia\, all inspired by their immersion in Son jarocho & zapateado dance. The evening will also feature collaborations with Ballet Folklorico Mexico en la Piel Academia\, students from the FGSD mariachi program and FGMT alumni. The night will be full of surprises and collaborations. \nDon’t miss this special anniversary event\, an unforgettable night of music\, dance\, and celebration!

SUMMARY:It’s Our Time
DESCRIPTION:In its inaugural concert\, the Portland Sage Singers presents an evening of music and stories extolling the simple\, and not so simple\, joys of elderhood. The concert opens with Stephen Sondheim’s powerful anthem\, “Our Time” from Merrily We Roll Along. From there\, the chorus of singers aged 55 and above\, whisks the audience on a journey of shared emotions as varied as the music that ranges from J.S. Bach to Whitney Houston. \nIf laughter is the best medicine\, there will be lots of medicine including a new commissioned piece from Los Angeles composer Dave Volpe. The piece titled “Organ Recital\,” shares the maladies reserved for folks of a certain age. “Senior Psalm” by composer Daniel Gawthrop will also have its world premiere. \nSongs of empowerment include Iconic singer/songwriter Holly Near’s powerful “I Ain’t Afraid” and Labi Siffre’s “Something Inside So Strong.” \nThe chorus sings about coming out about our love in the stunning love song\, “Secret Love” from Calamity Jane and the stunning “in Whatever Time We Have” from Stephen Schwartz’ Children of Eden. The evening ends proudly proclaiming “We Are Survivors” in a rousing finale by Broadway composer Andrew Lippa from Unbreakable. There will be many surprises along the way. The message from Portland Sage Singers is clear. It’s not just “Our Time\,” but high time Portland had a chorus consisting of Q+ Elders and Allies. It will be an auspicious debut. \n80 minutes\, no intermission.\nArtistic Director Dr. Timothy Seelig
