SUMMARY:Marian Masterworks
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Chorale\, Marian Masterworks \nThe Oregon Chorale’s debut at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts features the hauntingly emotional music of two of Central Europe’s most renowned modern composers. Henryk Górecki’s Marian Songs (Pieśni Maryjne)\, op. 54 features five a cappella movements comprised of musical prayers to different aspects of the Virgin Mary\, the patron saint of Poland. Gorecki incorporates Polish folk and sacred music into a gorgeous\, flowing\, and seemingly simplistic style shaped by modernist elements. Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Passion and Resurrection uses texts drawn from Catholic\, Protestant\, and Byzantine liturgy brought to life through powerfully emotional music. Our guest artist\, soprano Arwen Myers lends her stunning talent to this captivating masterpiece accompanied by a professional string orchestra. \nSaturday\, June 3\, 2023\, @ 7:00 pm \nSunday\, June 4\, 2023\, @ 3:00 pm \nRuntimes: 30/15/30

SUMMARY:¡Viva el amor!
DESCRIPTION:¡Viva el amor! is a rich and vibrant tapestry of choral music from Peru\, Venezuela\, Cuba\, Argentina\, México\, and the United States\, presented by ISing Choir under the direction of Stephen Galván. ISing will provide a veritable feast for the senses with this concert\, which features a collection of Hispanic love songs as well as sacred music based on folk rhythms and melodies native to these countries. “Hanacpachap\,” a processional hymn to the Virgin Mary in the Quechua language\, was composed by an Inca student of Franciscan priest Juan Pérez de Bocanegra between 1620 and 1631\, and is the earliest work of vocal polyphony printed in the New World. “Misa Criolla” by Argentinian composer Ariel Ramírez is an invitation of love encompassing pieces traditionally sung in the Roman Catholic mass. The multicultural folk ensemble Grupo Condor will accompany the choir on both these works. Audiences will be sure to remember “Oblivion”\, based on the tango music of Astor Piazzolla\, long after leaving the concert hall\, along with the smooth and sensuous melodies of compositions such as “Al Tribunal De Tu Pecho” by Carlos Guastavino and Z. Randall Stroope’s “Amor De Mi Alma”. \nIn keeping with ISing’s mission\, the choir will be accepting separate donations (cash\, check or credit card) to support this season’s beneficiary\, Mariachi Una Voz\, a Mariachi band composed of middle and high school students. Mariachi is a beautiful art form from México\, and this program provides an opportunity for the audience to explore and enjoy part of México’s rich culture.

SUMMARY:Portland Cello Project 90s v. 90s
DESCRIPTION:Oregon’s acclaimed and beloved genre-defying chamber ensemble is traversing through time in its upcoming performance: 90s v. 90s. In this newest installment\, Portland Cello Project explores and showcases both well- and lesser-known works from the 1790s\, 1890s\, and especially the 1990s. This night won’t just smell like teen spirit; the performance will feature Beethoven and other classical and romantic heavyweights\, seamlessly crossing over to everything from Jane’s Addiction to No Doubt.  \nPatti King of The Shins joins the group as a guest vocalist for a night of musical homage that transcends the ages. Always innovative and bringing the unexpected\, PCP will usher you through time in a friendly competition of eras and soundscapes doing what they do so well: reimagining what makes all music special. Bring your best flannel (or waistcoat) and see which period wins — no matter what happens\, it will be a ton of fun. \n—- \nIn the fall of 2006\, a group of 9 cellists got on stage at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge to perform western classical music in an informal setting. \nMany of the cellists that night thought it would only happen once. \nBut slowly that one-off event became a second\, and a third\, cellists joined and left and rejoined the group again\, to perform in Portland’s most popular clubs. By 2009 the group had evolved into a nationally-recognized performing\, recording\, and educational group with a revolving cast of cellists. Cello Project (or PCP as their fans affectionately call them) were quickly appearing anywhere and everywhere in North America\, from punk rock clubs to symphony halls\, from street parties to exclusive private events. By 2010 self-described horde of cellos were spending more than a quarter of the year touring\, featuring a diverse repertoire that quickly ballooned to over 1\,000 pieces of music. \nUnder the artistic direction of Douglas Jenkins\, the group grew and evolved\, working with an all-star group of cellists in the Pacific Northwest (Skip vonKuske\, Diane Chaplin\, Nancy Ives\, Gideon Freudmann\, Kevin Jackson\, to name just a few…). The group developed a three-part philosophy that has mostly remained unchanged over the years: \nTo bring the cello places you wouldn’t normally see it (from wild dance parties\, to formal symphony halls\, to street parties\, to Millennium Park in Chicago…). \nTo perform music on the cello you wouldn’t normally associate with the instrument alongside music from the Western Classical Tradition (from Pantera to Taylor Swift to Kanye West to Elliott Smith\, alongside Bach\, Rossini\, and Saint-Saens\, to name just a few…). \nTo build bridges between different musical communities through educational\, community outreach\, and through collaboration with myriad artists\, from The Dandy Warhols to Garrison Keillor to Ural Thomas to Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) to Jolie Holland to Peter Yarrow (Peter\, Paul and Mary)\, among many others\, and cellists such as Ben Sollee\, Maya Beiser and Zoe Keating. \n“It doesn’t get much more genre-crossing than this.”—MTV \n“This indie orchestra gives classical music a jolt of energy.”—Spin Magazine \n“The PCP has come to epitomize Portland’s offbeat music scene\, one where boundaries are blurred and cellos are in abundance.” —The Strad

SUMMARY:Live Wire with Luke Burbank
DESCRIPTION:Live Wire at The Reser with Jenny Conlee\, Mohanad Elshieky\, José Olivarez\, Timothy Egan\, and more! \nLive Wire Radio is an independently produced radio show and non-profit based in Portland\, Oregon. Hosted by Luke Burbank and announced by Elena Passarello\, the show artfully blends unpredictable conversation\, live music\, and original comedy featuring all kinds of cultural talent and creative minds\, from emerging artists to established acts. We champion discovery by producing witty\, engaging\, spirited\, and genuine live and listening experiences for our audience and for ourselves. \n“Live Wire is a joy of a show and a joy of a community. I’d return at the drop of a hat! It’s where I go to have a great time as a guest and as a listener.” – Aubrey Gordon\, Author\, Your Fat Friend  \nJenny Conlee\, the multi-instrumentalist best known for her 23-year tenure as a member of indie icons The Decemberists\, is stepping once more to center stage with the release of Tides: Pieces for Accordion and Piano. The humble yet deeply emotional album of instrumentals finds Conlee pulling from her vast well of influences and knowledge to work in a more neo-classical mode. Written during a week-long artist’s retreat on the coast of Washington State\, Conlee found inspiration within the natural environment she was surrounded by: the ocean\, sand\, dune grass\, wind\, and a hawk she spotted hunting along the beach. The finished compositions are like an oil portrait of a seaside scene — multi-colored\, richly textured\, and able to draw on sense memories buried deep within the mind and body. \nJosé Olivarez is a literary star on the rise and the son of Mexican immigrants. His debut book of poems\, Citizen Illegal\, was a finalist for the PEN/Jean Stein Award and a winner of the 2018 Chicago Review of Books Poetry Prize. It was named a top book of 2018 by the Adroit Journal\, NPR\, and the New York Public Library. Along with Felicia Chavez and Willie Perdomo\, he co-edited the poetry anthology The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 4: LatiNext\, and his latest collection of poetry Promises of Gold\, translated into Spanish by poet David Ruano\, has already been described as “visceral and moving.” When he’s not writing\, he cohosts the poetry podcast The Poetry Gods. \nMohanad Elshieky is a New York-based comedian who has made his national tv debut on Conan\, has been featured on Comedy Central\, and toured with the beloved POP UP Magazine. He has appeared in an episode of Epix’s “Unprotected Sets” and was listed as one of Thrillist’s “50 Best Undiscovered Comics.” Mohanad\, who most recently worked as a digital producer on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee\, has a special skill for making you laugh at the seemingly unlaughable. The Libyan-born comedian combines a deceptively laid-back demeanor with his whip-smart perspective on politics and culture. The Portland Mercury called him “an undisputed genius of comedy\,” and he’s been featured on podcasts such as Lovett or Leave It\, Pod Save The People and Harmontown. \nTimothy Egan is a literary superstar. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and the author of eight books\, most recently The Immortal Irishman\, a New York Times bestseller. Furthermore\, his acclaimed book on the Dust Bowl\, The Worst Hard Time\, won a National Book Award for nonfiction and was named a New York Times Editors’ Choice\, a New York Times Notable Book\, a Washington State Book Award winner\, and a Book Sense Book of the Year Honor Book. Egan returns to the literary scene with his latest book\, A Fever in the Heartland\, which is a historical thriller that investigates and unravels the Ku Klux Klan’s rise to power and the woman who stopped them. In his free time\, he writes a weekly opinion column for The New York Times. \nRun of show 120 min with no intermission.
