SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes of History: An Evening with David Hume Kennerly
DESCRIPTION:Join Oregon History Maker and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly on a magical mystery tour through some of the major events of the past fifty-plus years as seen through his eyes and camera. From the night Robert Kennedy was shot\, to the battlefields of Vietnam\, to Watergate and the resignation of Nixon\, Kennerly’s photography has captured countless moments in history. This talk will transport you to the room where President Ford ended the Vietnam War\, Egyptian President Sadat’s historic trip to Israel\, the horrors of Jonestown\, Reagan and Gorbachev’s Fireside Summit in Geneva\, the governor’s mansion with George W. Bush as the 2000 election ended in a tie\, an elevator with President and Mrs. Obama on inaugural night\, and with Trump the night he won the presidential election in 2016. Kennerly was there for all of that and more\, and he will take you along for the photographic ride of your life. \nDavid Hume Kennerly has been a photographer on the front lines of history for more than 50 years. At 25\, he became one of the youngest winners of the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism. The 1972 award for Feature Photography recognized his work from the previous year\, and included images of the Vietnam and Cambodia wars\, refugees escaping from East Pakistan into India\, and the Ali v. Frazier “Fight of the Century” World Heavyweight Championship at Madison Square Garden. Two years later\, Kennerly was appointed President Gerald R. Ford’s Personal White House Photographer. \nKennerly’s photos have appeared on more than fifty major magazine covers\, and he has documented history in more than a hundred countries. He has photographed eleven U.S. presidents\, covered thirteen presidential campaigns\, served as a contributing editor for Newsweek magazine for ten years\, and was a contributing photographer for Time & Life magazines. American Photo Magazine named Kennerly “One of the 100 Most Important People in Photography.” \nIn 2019\, The University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography acquired the David Hume Kennerly Archive. It features almost one million images\, prints\, objects\, memorabilia\, correspondence\, and documents dating back to 1957. His work joins that of Ansel Adams\, Edward Weston\, Richard Avedon\, W. Eugene Smith\, and scores of other legendary photographers. The Oregon Historical Society honored Kennerly as a History Maker in 2016\, an award presented annually to contemporary individuals and organizations that are positively shaping the history\, culture\, and landscape of Oregon. In 2018\, University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins appointed Kennerly the university’s first Presidential Scholar. \n$36 / $26 for OHS members \nThis performance is 90 min with no intermission.

SUMMARY:Czech Mix
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate 15 years of 45th Parallel Universe performances with our debut at the Reser Center! Drawn from the Oregon Symphony\, the virtuosos of 45th Parallel seek to tell the whole story of classical music\, with programs that range from the baroque to cutting-edge modernity. During the pandemic year\, 45th Parallel used new technology to present 54 online concerts featuring musicians from around the world\, and providing over $70\,000 to musicians who’d been silenced by shuttered concert halls and empty stages. \nFor this special anniversary\, we’ll celebrate our return to live performances by shining a spotlight on the rich cultural heritage of the Czech Republic\, with rarely performed pieces of surpassing beauty by Martinů\, Janačék\, and Dvořák. \nBohuslav Martinů’s Sonata for Flute and Piano was composed in 1945 in Cape Cod\, during the composer’s five years in the USA following his escape from occupied France. Martinů’s sonata was inspired by the call of the whippoorwill\, gorgeously referenced in this melodic masterpiece. Oregon Symphony principal flutist Martha Long will be joined by acclaimed pianist Maria Garcia for this performance. \nAt the end of 1877\, during a trip to Vienna\, Antonín Dvořák attended a concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic whose program included Mozart’s Serenade in B flat major for wind instruments. He was so taken with the work that\, as soon as he arrived back in Prague\, Dvořák completed his own Serenade for Winds within fourteen days\, following Mozart’s example by adding a cello and bass to the wind instruments. While there are clear references to Mozart’s Serenade\, Dvořák’s Serenade is wholly Czech in character and looks back to the tradition of music-making in Czech castles and palaces. \nA friend of Dvořák’s\, Leoš Janáček received his musical education in Prague towards the end of the 1800s\, when the city was alive with artistic ferment and the desire to promote the Czech national identity. The sumptuous Idyll for Strings is a youthful work\, with harmonies and repetitive melodies influenced by the contours of his native Czech folk music. \n45th Parallel concerts are lively\, entertaining\, and a celebration of the rich cultural ferment of our beloved community. Join us for this special evening of beautiful music! \nProgram listing: \n\nSonata for Flute and Piano\, by Bohuslav Martinu\nIdyll for Strings by Leoš Janáček\nSerenade for wind instruments\, cello\, and double bass by Antonin Dvorák\n\n  \nThis performance is 80 mins. with no intermission. \nView our COVID-19 Health & Safety Policy

SUMMARY:Yearning for Christmas
DESCRIPTION:ISing Choir Yearning for Christmas \nAt a time when there is such a desire to “get back to normal\,” coming out of the global pandemic\, we yearn for the Christmas of old – the gathering of friends to listen to and sing songs of the season\, enjoy the warmth of the holidays\, and celebrate the midwinter.  This sense of yearning guided ISing Choir in the program selection for their Yearning for Christmas concert that will be presented at the Patricia Reser Reser Center for the Arts on December 3 and 4. \nISing\, under the direction of Stephen Galván\, will be joined by members of the Big Horn Brass Ensemble\, organist Dan Miller\, and pianist Yvonne Yang in a celebration of the season which includes familiar tunes like “Joy to the world\,” “Angels we have heard on high\,” and “The snow lay on the ground” in new arrangements. The choir will also share the stage with ICAN Production Assistant on All Classical Portland\, Steven Joinson\, who will narrate “Brother Heinrich’s Christmas”. Honoring the people of Ukraine\, the choir will perform two Ukrainian pieces\, one of which is familiar to many as “Carol of the Bells.”  The concert will conclude with the electrifying “Gloria” by John Rutter. \nConcerts will be held on Saturday\, December 3rd at 7:30 pm and Sunday\, December 4th at 3:00 pm at The Reser\, with convenient parking in the nearby parking garage. Tickets will be $10 which will cover the facilities and box office cost for the performances. In keeping with ISing’s mission\, the choir will be accepting separate donations (cash\, check\, or credit card) to support this season’s beneficiary\, the Parker Bounds Johnson Foundation. The foundation serves at-risk young people and their families through Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare programs and beyond. Your tax-free contribution to the Parker Bounds Johnson Foundation will help facilitate the use of wilderness therapy to help youth deal with life and death issues. \nISing’s mission is to share innovative and exceptional choral music while supporting local non-profit organizations. To date\, the choir has raised $384\,370 for worthy causes. ISing performs the finest that choral music has to offer and increases public awareness of non-profits that are making a positive impact in our community. \nThese concerts are made possible by grants from the Beaverton City Arts Program\, the Cultural Coalition of Washington County\, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

SUMMARY:Ron Artis II & Thunderstorm Artis
DESCRIPTION:Ron Artis II \nRon Artis II is a multi-instrumentalist who grew up in Hawaii among an exceptionally musical family. The second oldest of 10 other siblings\, Ron was surrounded by artists and musicians daily. In fact\, growing up\, Ron thought it was weird that everybody else didn’t have ten siblings running around with them every day. They even had an “Artis Family Band” and when they weren’t off painting\, at the beach\, they were learning their instruments. \nFull band\, trio or solo\, Ron has performed and collaborated with Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac)\, Jack Johnson\, Jake Shimabukuro\, Booker T Jones\, Eric Krasno (Soulive\, Lettuce) and G Love among others. If this wasn’t a rich line-up of names\, go spend a few moments reading the lyrics to Ron’s songs. Each song is laced with intention\, deep conviction\, story\, and a heart that has truly been there. It makes sense why Ron is often heard talking [and singing] about “walking the walk.” “I really try to write music that can be helpful not only for our generation\, but for life in general.” \nRon has been married to his beautiful wife Julia for 9 years and counting. They have 4 lovely [and musically inclined] daughters\, with a fifth on the way! If you’ve been to one of Ron’s shows\, then you may have had the immense pleasure of seeing a daughter or two take to the stage with her father. In fact\, being on the road is a family affair. Ron comments\, “It’s so easy to lose touch with life and lose touch with the things that inspired you originally to write music and do things. I can walk off stage at a festival with tons of people having a great time\, and then I go backstage and change my daughter’s diaper! It keeps life really in perspective of what’s important — I really enjoy this … They really keep me grounded and keep my heart full.” \nWith 4 studio albums\, 60+ songs\, 1000s of flights\, 100\,000s of diapers\, and 15 countries\, Ron and his family [full band included] continue to live by preparation and faith. Holding each day and person they meet as with immense privilege\, not to be taken for granted\, they look forward to meeting and delighting audiences around the world. \nThunderstorm Artis \nThunderstorm learned at a very young age to play piano\, guitar\, harp and percussion from his father Ron Artis and mother Victoria. Ron was a Motown session player who played keyboards on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” His mother Victoria was also a member of the Motown family\, touring as a vocalist with Lena Horne\, and many other Motown greats. Thunderstorm is a featured artist at the Wanderlust Festivals throughout North America and currently tours solo. He has toured for many years with his brother Ron Artis II\, who is one of the hottest guitar players out there today. Thunderstorm has also played with Jack Johnson\, Booker T\, and Mike Love. Thunderstorm’s music crosses many genres including Folk\, Rock\, Soul and Country. At his concerts he has been known to jump into Bowie\, Beatles\, Elton John and a heart wrenching version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” \nNo matter what Thunderstorm sings or writes he does it from his heart. His life experience has given him plenty of material to share. Thunderstorm does not consider his music as notes on a page but rather a window into his heart. He believes that through his music he can make our world a better place by lifting the hearts of others. Thunderstorm’s upbeat music and infectious smile bring people to their feet at every stop. \nReser Presents performances no longer require masks for entry. While face masks are no longer mandatory\, they are highly encouraged.\nIn addition\, COVID-19 vaccine proof is no longer a condition of entry. \nPerformance runtime:\nFirst: Set 60 min\nIntermission: 20 min\nSecond Set: 90 min \nSponsored by TriMet.
