SUMMARY:Summer Sings: A Community Sing of Brahms' German Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Join the Portland Symphonic Choir for an immersive audience participation concert experience as part of Summer Sings at The Reser. Whether you’re new to singing or an experienced chorister\, Summer Sings invites you to pick up a score and sing from your seat\, surrounded by members of the Portland Symphonic Choir.  If you prefer to listen\, we’d love to have you come\, listen\, and learn! \nThe first of three Summer Sings this Summer\, this series brings Portland-metro area people together in multigenerational\, participatory performances that uplift local conductors\, soloists and community singers. These sing-alongs broaden the reach and relevance of choral music in our region\, providing a collective exploration of great choral music together. \nThis Sunday\, July 20th\, we mark a special milestone — 20 years to the day since the very first Summer Sings in 2005\, which also featured Brahms’ German Requiem. This year\, we return to that work\, led by Artistic Director Dr. Alissa Deeter and guest conductor Dr. Katherine FitzGibbon. \nJoin us in a celebration of 20 years of Summer Sings at the start of PSC’s 80th year. Pick up a score (scores provided)\, lift your voice\, and become part of the music! \nFor further assistance\, please contact the box office at 971-501-7722 – Wednesday-Saturday from noon until 6 PM.

SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. \nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which Down Beat said\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award this year for Best Jazz Album. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist\, in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus\, Sun Ra and her late mentor Barry Harris. \nSponsored by Tim & Mary Boyle \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Lineage: Sound and Fury
DESCRIPTION:ONN launches the season with a vibrant exploration of musical wit and transformation across time. Portland’s own Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw opens the program with Entr’acte\, a work inspired by the elegant and surprising turns of Haydn’s string quartets. Next\, Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury draws from the same Haydn source and Shakespeare’s Macbeth\, weaving together visceral energy and literary allusions in a thrilling orchestral experience. At the center is Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 60\, Il Distratto—a work originally written for the stage\, brimming with invention\, charm\, and comedic brilliance. This imaginative program forms a rich dialogue between past and present\, showcasing how composers reimagine the concert experience through daring and wit.

SUMMARY:First Friday Art Walk & The Giving Tree Was Black Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join The Reser for an engaging and participatory performance during First Friday. Featuring the sculptural and performative works of Sadé DuBoise\, guests will enjoy sharing the story of The Giving Tree Was Black. Reimagining a familiar story through the lens of Black motherhood and generational endurance\, Sadé DuBoise stands in silence\, her body becoming a living form—rooted and adorned with paper charms\, seed pouches\, and crochet fragments. Viewers of all ages are invited to approach and gently remove these offerings from her form. Expanding DuBoise’s self-portraiture into a ritual of reclamation and reciprocity\, centering the labor of Black women who have long been asked to give everything. Here\, the tree gives—but on her own terms. \nEach seed pouch contains wildflower seeds and instructions to scatter in barren places\, extending this moment of care into the world beyond the Gallery. Alongside the performance\, a branch shelf with a wooden bowl remains as a space for continued interaction. Individuals are invited to write reflections—on grief\, growth\, or personal offerings—and place them in the bowl\, completing a quiet cycle of exchange. \nFirst Friday October 3\, 2025 | 6:00 – 9:00 pm (performance at 6:45) | Art Gallery\nFree and open to the public\, no ticket required. \nLearn more about Black Matter. \nPhoto Credit: Sadé Duboise
