SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. \nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which Down Beat said\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award this year for Best Jazz Album. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist\, in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus\, Sun Ra and her late mentor Barry Harris. \nSponsored by Tim & Mary Boyle \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Lineage: Sound and Fury
DESCRIPTION:ONN launches the season with a vibrant exploration of musical wit and transformation across time. Portland’s own Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw opens the program with Entr’acte\, a work inspired by the elegant and surprising turns of Haydn’s string quartets. Next\, Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury draws from the same Haydn source and Shakespeare’s Macbeth\, weaving together visceral energy and literary allusions in a thrilling orchestral experience. At the center is Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 60\, Il Distratto—a work originally written for the stage\, brimming with invention\, charm\, and comedic brilliance. This imaginative program forms a rich dialogue between past and present\, showcasing how composers reimagine the concert experience through daring and wit.

SUMMARY:First Friday Art Walk & The Giving Tree Was Black Performance
DESCRIPTION:Join The Reser for an engaging and participatory performance during First Friday. Featuring the sculptural and performative works of Sadé DuBoise\, guests will enjoy sharing the story of The Giving Tree Was Black. Reimagining a familiar story through the lens of Black motherhood and generational endurance\, Sadé DuBoise stands in silence\, her body becoming a living form—rooted and adorned with paper charms\, seed pouches\, and crochet fragments. Viewers of all ages are invited to approach and gently remove these offerings from her form. Expanding DuBoise’s self-portraiture into a ritual of reclamation and reciprocity\, centering the labor of Black women who have long been asked to give everything. Here\, the tree gives—but on her own terms. \nEach seed pouch contains wildflower seeds and instructions to scatter in barren places\, extending this moment of care into the world beyond the Gallery. Alongside the performance\, a branch shelf with a wooden bowl remains as a space for continued interaction. Individuals are invited to write reflections—on grief\, growth\, or personal offerings—and place them in the bowl\, completing a quiet cycle of exchange. \nFirst Friday October 3\, 2025 | 6:00 – 9:00 pm (performance at 6:45) | Art Gallery\nFree and open to the public\, no ticket required. \nLearn more about Black Matter. \nPhoto Credit: Sadé Duboise

SUMMARY:York the Explorer
DESCRIPTION:“York the Explorer” is a groundbreaking folk opera that amplifies the extraordinary story of York\, the enslaved Black man who accompanied Lewis and Clark on the Corps of Discovery expedition\, yet whose contributions have been largely forgotten by history. Based on historical accounts and set to an innovative score that blends folk\, classical\, jazz\, hip hop\, and reggae\, York the Explorer celebrates an unsung American hero whose skill and bravery helped map a nation. The opera also honors the indigenous nations who were displaced by the expansion of the United States\, acknowledging the complex legacy of westward exploration. \nYork the Explorer‘s book and music are composed by GRAMMY®-nominated producer Aaron Nigel Smith\, with lyrics co-written by Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist Dr. Renee Mitchell. This compelling musical work illuminates York’s remarkable journey of self-discovery and determination as he navigates a complex role in the expansion of the American territory. \nYork the Explorer is a groundbreaking folk opera by Aaron Nigel Smith. \nSponsored by Ronni Lacroute \nhttps://yorktheexplorer.org/ \nSee the York Program HERE.

SUMMARY:Liberace and Liza: The Cedar Hills Have Eyes (A Tribute)
DESCRIPTION:For the first time ever\, David Saffert and Jillian Snow bring their eerily accurate portrayals of Liberace and Liza Minnelli to The Reser—just in time for Halloween\, because nothing says “spooky” quite like sequins\, jazz hands\, and unresolved mother issues. \nIn a show nobody asked for (but everyone will be glad exists)\, these two musical creeps channel the spirits of showbiz legends who famously never performed together—possibly for reasons of cosmic self-preservation. \nExpect piano pyrotechnics\, vocals with zero regard for restraint\, and costume changes that may induce mild motion sickness. It’s cabaret meets séance\, and yes\, we’re hoping for a fog machine. We love fog machines. \nCome for the nostalgia. Stay for the sheer audacity. \nThis Halloween\, Liberace and Liza take The Reser by storm in “Liberace & Liza: The Cedar Hills Have Eyes (A Tribute).” \nWe lock the doors. You’ve been warned. \nSponsored by The Reser Family Foundation

SUMMARY:Dia De Los Muertos: Cuentos y Leyendas (Day of the Dead: Tales and Legends)
DESCRIPTION:Be ready to be immersed and transported as Ballet Folklórico Las Rosas de Oregon presents Día de los Muertos: Cuentos y Leyendas. This unforgettable performance invites audiences on a journey through Mexico’s rich traditions of storytelling\, folklore\, and remembrance\, honoring the beauty of Día de los Muertos through music\, dance\, and storytelling. \nMore than a holiday\, Día de los Muertos is a celebration of life\, love\, and memory. Families come together to honor their ancestors\, filling altars with flowers\, candles\, and offerings\, welcoming the spirits of loved ones with joy instead of sorrow. In this spirit\, Cuentos y Leyendas brings to the stage timeless myths and tales that reflect the values of family\, heritage\, and the eternal bond between the living and the departed. Each performance is a living story that connects us to the past while keeping tradition alive in the present. We invite you to remember\, to celebrate\, and to be part of this beautiful continued  tradition.
