SUMMARY:Live Wire with Luke Burbank
DESCRIPTION:Special Guests: Lindy West\, Camille Dungy\, and Margo Cilker \nLive Wire Radio is an independently produced radio show based in Portland\, Oregon. Hosted by Luke Burbank and announced by Elena Passarello\, the show artfully blends unpredictable conversation\, live music\, and original comedy featuring all kinds of cultural talent and creative minds\, from emerging artists to established acts. Live Wire champions discovery by producing engaging\, spirited\, and genuine live and listening experiences for a local and national audience. \nLINDY WEST \nLindy West is a former contributing opinion writer for the New York Times and the author of “Shit\, Actually: The The Definitive\, 100% Objective Guide to Modern Cinema”\, as well as the New York Times bestselling memoir “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman” and the essay collection “The Witches Are Coming”. Her work has also appeared in This American Life\, The Guardian\, Cosmopolitan\, GQ\, Vulture\, Jezebel\, and others. She is the co-founder of the reproductive rights destigmatization campaign #ShoutYourAbortion. Her latest project\, a one woman show titled Every Castle\, Ranked\, takes her audience on a hilarious\, bittersweet\, razzle-dazzle journey through her fears\, aspirations\, disappointments\, the history of toilets\, and what it means to be a star. \nCAMILLE DUNGY \nCamille T. Dungy is the author of four collections of poetry and two collections of essays. Her most recent collection\, “Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden\,” recounts her seven-year odyssey to diversify her garden in the predominately white community of Fort Collins\, Colorado. BOOKLIST calls it “a significant\, beautiful\, meditative\, and wholly down-to-earth memoir.” She has been the finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award\, a Guggenheim Fellow\, an NAACP Image Award nominee\, and the winner of an American Book Award. Her poems have been published in Best American Poetry\, The 100 Best African American Poems\, the Pushcart Anthology\, Best American Travel Writing\, and over thirty other anthologies. \nMARGO CILKER \nMargo Cilker has spent the last seven years touring internationally as a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter. Her debut record\, “Pohorylle”\, was nominated for UK Americana Album of The Year alongside Brandi Carlile and Robert Plant which earned her a slew of festival performances and tours supporting American Aquarium\, Hayes Carll\, and Drive-By Truckers. Her sophomore album\, “Valley of Heart’s Delight”\, refers to a place she can’t return: California’s Santa Clara Valley\, as it was known before the orchards were paved over and became more famous for Silicon than apricots. Margo is the fifth generation of Cilker’s born there\, and in this 11-song collection\, family and nature intertwine as guiding motifs\, at once precious and endangered\, beautiful and exhausting. Her music\, which has been compared to that of Lucinda Williams\, Townes Van Zandt\, and Gillian Welch\, deftly explores the complex\, often-shifting terrain where love and loss meet. \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:BORIS GILTBURG
DESCRIPTION:Boris Giltburg\, whose “pianism is ideally suited to late Beethoven … enormously pleasurable and revelatory” (BBC Music Magazine)\, opens his PPI recitals with the composer’s lyrically rhapsodic Sonata No. 31 — a work of both serene respite and operatic pathos that\, even upon first listen\, envelops the soul with its loving embrace. \nFrom a dark\, desolate opening to the heavenly ascension experienced in its final phrase\, Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor charts a journey of emotional catharsis filled with plenty of heart-racing moments\, while Rachmaninoff’s final preludes showcase the composer’s ability to create grand cinematic scenes using even the most miniature of musical forms. \n“virtuosity in service to the sublime” \nBEETHOVEN Sonata No. 31 in A-flat Major\, op. 110 \nLISZT Sonata in B Minor \n— Intermission — \nRACHMANINOFF Thirteen Preludes\, op. 32

SUMMARY:The Klezmatics
DESCRIPTION:The Klezmatics are globally renowned world music superstars — and the only klezmer band to win a Grammy Award. The Klezmatics emerged out of the vibrant cultural scene of New York City’s East Village in 1986\, with klezmer steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality\, while incorporating contemporary themes such as human rights and eclectic musical influences including Arab\, African\, Latin and Balkan rhythms\, jazz and punk. In the course of over twenty years and nine albums\, they have continued making music that is wild\, mystical\, provocative\, reflective and ecstatically danceable. \n“a complete joy” —All Music Guide \nPerforming songs from Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah. \nWoody Guthrie lived in Coney Island\, Brooklyn\, across the street from his mother-in-law\, the Yiddish poet\, Aliza Greenblatt. They shared their dreams and their art\, their neighborhood and a family. \nKlezmatics trumpeter Frank London says\, “each of us found our own way to confront Woody’s poetry. The words are all his\, but the diversity of musical styles is quintessentially Klezmatic.” London says that some songs lent themselves to overtly Jewish klezmer music\, others to more American forms\, like classic dust-bowl country tunes. Some felt brand new to the musicians\, while others felt more like folks songs “that had been around forever.” The band’s influences in setting the lyrics to music ranged from sacred (Hasidic nigunim –wordless tunes often used in prayer – and Gospel) to secular (freylekhs – traditional dance music – and hoedowns).” \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:Artist Reception & Social Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Emerging artists from around the state spark creative conversation in a diverse range of concepts\, media\, and stylistic explorations. Come join The Reser as we ring in the new year with a celebratory reception on Friday\, January 5th from 6 – 9 pm. Artists will be in attendance to share their work\, concepts\, techniques\, and give viewers an opportunity to discover new dialogues from these creative voices. \nGuests are invited to join PNCA graduate student\, Jessica Joner as she features a participatory community engagement element to her installation Of What Was. Contributions to the work throughout the exhibition will continue in the upper Murdock gallery throughout the entire exhibition. \nOf What Was…\nOf What Was is a display of table settings that were used to host a gathering of people for a meal.  This event came about shortly after the end of the global pandemic as the artist and others renewed a passion for the value of personal community building and social connections. Dinner guests wrote statements identifying important aspects of community\, that later the artists embroidered. \nAs a way to extend the community engagement and connections\, small cloth napkins will be provided for guests to respond to the prompt: What is your favorite part of sharing a meal with friends?  The artist will embroider responses and add them to the installation throughout. \nImage: Of What Was by Jessica Joner \nList of Artists:\n\nOndrea Bell\nKatherine Curry\nJamie Dang\nKelsey Davis Hamilton\nMegita Denton\nAlexandra Easton\nNoelle Herceg\nJessica Joner\nTanner Lind\nConner Mowery\nIlsa Payne\nRae Sheridan\nEliza Williams\nHali Wilmunnson\nLeah Yao

SUMMARY:FILIPPO GORINI
DESCRIPTION:BERG Sonata\, op. 1 \nSCHUBERT Sonata in A Major\, D. 664 \n— Intermission — \nBEETHOVEN Diabelli Variations\, op. 120 \nOne of the piano world’s rising stars\, praised for “brave\, original playing” (Guardian) and performances “exploding with pure joie de vivre” (BBC Music Magazine)\, Filippo Gorini returns to PPI with a program exploring the vast range of human emotion. \nCharting a journey of tragedy and turmoil\, Berg’s only piano sonata is a work of searing intensity written at the crossroads of romanticism and modernism\, while Schubert’s bucolic Sonata in A Major lyrically evokes the beauty of summer in the Austrian countryside. And in his towering Diabelli Variations\, Beethoven uses a simple waltz as the springboard for daring feats of musical expression fueled by the composer’s boundless imagination.

SUMMARY:National Geographic Film: "The Space Race"
DESCRIPTION:THE SPACE RACE weaves together the stories of Black astronauts seeking to break the bonds of social injustice to reach for the stars\, including Guion Bluford\, Ed Dwight and Charles Bolden\, among many others. In THE SPACE RACE\, directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés profile the pioneering Black pilots\, scientists and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space\, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth. From 1963\, when the assassination of JFK thwarted Captain Ed Dwight’s quest to reach the moon\, to 2020\, when the echoes of the civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd reached the International Space Station\, the story of African Americans at NASA is a tale of world events colliding with the aspirations of uncommon men. The bright dreams of Afrofuturism become reality in THE SPACE RACE\, turning science fiction into science fact and forever redefining what “the right stuff” looks like\, giving us new heroes to celebrate and a fresh history to explore. \nLELAND MELVIN – EXECUTIVE PRODUCER\nLeland Melvin is an engineer\, educator\, former NASA astronaut and NFL wide receiver. He served on board the space shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist on missions STS-122 (2008) and STS-129 (2009)\, helping to construct the International Space Station. Upon hanging up his space boots\, Melvin led NASA Education and co-chaired the White House’s Federal Coordination in STEAM Education Task Force\, developing the nation’s five-year STEM education plan. After 24 years with NASA as a researcher\, astronaut and senior executive service leader\, he shares his life story as an athlete\, astronaut\, scientist\, engineer\, photographer and musician to help inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue STEAM careers. Melvin holds six honorary doctorates for his service in education\, the sciences and philanthropy. In May 2017\, Melvin released his memoir\, “Chasing Space: An Astronaut’s Story of Grit\, Grace\, and Second Chances.” In “Chasing Space\,” Melvin shares his personal journey from the gridiron to the stars and examines the intersecting roles of community\, perseverance and grace that align to create opportunities for success \nSponsored by Umpqua Bank

SUMMARY:International Guitar Night
DESCRIPTION:For the 24th annual tour\, Brian Gore has assembled a lineup of three IGN favorites and an exciting newcomer. LUCA STRICAGNOLI (Italy)\, the amazing acoustic rock interpreter\, will be returning for the 4th time. THU LE (Vietnam)\, whose nylon string artistry stretches from classical to contemporary) was on the IGN 2022 tour. MARCO PEREIRA (Brazil)\, the master composer and performer\, first toured with IGN in its early days and returns for his final go-round in 2024.  And MINNIE MARKS (Australia)\, the irrepressible blues slide guitarist and singer\, not only is new to IGN but will be making her North American debut. We are grateful and honored to present them all. \nLuca Stricagnoli\nWith his music videos exceeding 100 million views and bookings in every corner of the globe\, Luca Stricagnoli is considered one of the most interesting acoustic guitarists in the world. \nUsing up to five guitars in the same piece\, modified capos\, and self-conceived stratagems\, Luca continually leaves his audiences in awe and wondering what’s next for the up-and-coming guitarist. In addition to his musical abilities\, Luca brings an enthusiastic energy to the stage that makes him a true entertainer. \nHis latest invention\, a custom Triple Neck Guitar\, obtained once again a viral success with over 40 million views online. His performances with this instrument have been featured in magazines everywhere and even grabbed the attention of famous bands such as “Red Hot Chili Peppers”. Luca has played in more than 20 countries and in front of audiences up to 12\,000 people \nThu Le\nI am an International award-winning classical guitarist and certified guitar teacher. My love affair with the guitar began at the age of four thanks to my father\, Le Hanh\, At the age of five I gave my first public performance in Vietnam under his tutorship. I passed the entrance examination for the National Conservatory of Music\, Hanoi at the age of only seven\, making me the youngest ever student to be admitted to this prestigious establishment. To further enhance and develop my talent\, I took master classes with world-renowned guitarists such as Manuel Barrueco\, Nikita Koshkin\, Hubert Kaeppel\, Pavel Steidle\, Thomas Offermann\, Marcin Dylla\, Denis Azabagic\, Judicael Perroi\, and Gabriel Bianco. \nMy passion for guitar has seen me perform solo as well as hosting a series of successful master classes across several continents including North America\, UK and Europe\, the Middle East\, and Asia. And of course\, I stay close to my cultural roots performing regularly in Vietnam\, my beloved country of birth. \nIn 2018 I performed and held master classes at the prestigious Guitar Federation of America (GFA) convention held in Louisville\, USA. In addition\, I was a performing artist and jury member at the 2018 Alma Hanoi International Guitar Festival.  I also perform regularly at the famous Joaquin Rodrigo Guitar Festival in Spain and the renowned International Guitar Festival in Kolkata\, India. Besides my solo career\, I also collaborate and perform with orchestras\, string quartets\, vocalists\, violinists\, flutists\, and in guitar duo.  \nMarco Pereira\nMarco Pereira is an internationally renowned Brazilian composer\, guitarist\, and\nuniversity professor. He has performed and recorded with many top popular Brazilian singers/composers like Tom Jobim\, Milton Nascimento\, Edu Lobo\,\nPaulinho da Viola\, Gilberto Gil\, and Wagner Tiso. He has performed in North America on several occasions with International Guitar Night. He returns again for International Guitar Night XXIV in 2024. Marco was born in Sao Paulo and got classical guitar lessons with the Uruguayan master Isaias Sávio and music theory lessons at the Music and Drama Conservatory of São Paulo. He lived in France for five years and received a classical guitar master’s degree in performance from the Université Musicale Internationale of Paris\, and a master’s degree in Musicology from the University of Paris-Sorbonne with his thesis Hector Villa-Lobos and his guitar work (Editora Musimed – Brasília – Brasil). In Paris\, he was strongly influenced by jazz and Latin-American music which characterizes his compositional work\, in addition to Brazilian styles. He performed with great success at 9ème Festival de Jazz de Paris that allowed him to perform in Germany\, France\, Switzerland\, Denmark\, Italy\, Austria\, Canada\, and the United States. His compositions and playing have won awards in important international contests such as Spain’s Concurso Andrés Segóvia in Palma de Mallorca and Concurso Francisco Tárrega in Valencia. He has recorded over a dozen albums. In addition to performing internationally\, Marco is a professor in the Composition Department at the federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His compositions are published by Editions Lemoine\, Paris\, and GSP (Guitar Solo Publications)\, San Francisco\, and have been played and recorded by important guitarists all around the world. \nMinnie Marks\nMinnie Marks is not just some blazingly electrified guitar-playing freak of nature. She is also a rare and triple threat: Singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.    Relentlessly performing across the globe\, equipped with an old Goldtop in her hands and a revolutionary Farmer Foot Drum at her feet; Marks consistently pushes musical limits with her mind-blowing\, dynamic guitar wizardry and her insanely powerful voice\, that roars out her truth through song as if her own life depended on it. And\, if that’s not enough\, she simultaneously\, creates bone marrow-shaking grooves with spare limbs on her Foot Drum kit. Finally\, all three beasts are married together to forge a mammoth-sized wall of sound. From winning the world-renowned ‘Bluesfest Busking Competition’ in 2011\, to taking out the People’s Choice Award’ at both Blues At Bridgetown and Nannup Music Festival\, plus earning the winning place of ‘Best Guitarist’ for the Open Arms Festival competition\, Marks is no stranger on the block. \nHere’s what a few master musicians have to say…. \n“Minnie Marks\, she plays guitar like nothing I’ve ever seen before\, she sings like\nJanis Joplin\, she’s going to blow the world apart.” – Kim Churchill \n“I’m shakin’ in my boots. One word\, PRODIGY!” – Sarah McLeod (The\nSuperjesus) \n“One of the finest young guitar players in the country” – Julz Parker (Hussy Hicks) \n“Damn\, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a female shred harder than you in the flesh” –\nDallas Frasca \nOver the past twelve years\, Marks has paved her musical journey around the world with three studio albums and one live album recorded in Stuttgart\, Germany. The award-winning troubadour shows no sign of slowing down. Her new twelve-track album will be out for release in 2022. In 2024\, Minnie will make her North American debut with International Guitar Night. \nArts For All tickets are available.
