DESCRIPTION:Aside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar\, John Scofield is a creative artist of an even rarer sort: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent\, rock-solid aesthetic identity. Looking to commemorate his 73rd year\, Scofield has penned a collection of new compositions and re-formed the swinging group – formerly Combo 66 – to tour the music. Rising star Gerald Clayton is an obvious choice on piano\, an instrument central to the tunes. The connection between Scofield and drummer Bill Stewart strengthens as the decades pass. It was Stewart who introduced bassist Vicente Archer to the project eight years ago. Scofield is thrilled with the group and in addition to the musical combustion\, especially enjoys the inter-generational quality – seventies\, fifties and forties represented! Scofield will close 2025 with this band on tour. \nNow in its seventh year\, PRAx and the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University present American Strings\, a series of conversations and intimate performances with iconic musicians from the Americas whose perspectives shape our world. Prior guests have included Keb’ Mo’\, Rosanne Cash\, esperanza spalding\, and many more. \nHosted by ethnomusicologist and public historian Kelly Bosworth\, American Strings performances offer audiences the chance to hear artists play and reflect on their practice. In conversation\, artists discuss process\, biography\, and the themes of their work. Conversation is followed by musical performance. Guests typically perform unaccompanied\, but in select cases may appear with their ensembles. \nDr. Kelly Bosworth is Mary Jones and Thomas Hart Horning Assistant Professor of Public History and Ethnomusicology at Oregon State University\, where she teaches courses such as “Social Change and American Popular Music” and “Musical Worlds of the Pacific Northwest.”She works at the intersection of sound\, place\, and belonging. Produced by Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada\, the long running show features top Irish music\, song and dance in an engaging performance rich in humor and boundless energy. \nThe family-friendly performance features stunning vocals from Cathy Jordan along with lively instrumental tunes on fiddle by Mac Diarmada\, flute and uilleann pipes by Caoimhín Ó Fearghaíl and harp by Gráinne Hambly. They perform along with thrilling old-style Irish dancing from Samantha Harvey. In addition\, evocative photographic images provide a backdrop to some of the rich historical traditions of Ireland. \nThe holiday show was first conceived in 2005 with past tours featuring such stellar guest vocalists as Niamh Farrell\, Séamus & Méabh Begley\, Teresa Horgan\, Lumiere. DESCRIPTION:Kalani Pe‘a’s “Hawaiian Christmas” is a celebration of the warmth and special “aloha” of the Holiday Season\, sharing much-loved songs from both western and Hawaiian roots. A four-time Grammy winner in the Regional Roots category\, Kalani is a not-to-be-missed charismatic performer with a gorgeous voice\, powerful presence\, and joyful appeal. SUMMARY:Reaching for the Stars
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of their 20th Anniversary\, ISing Choir will perform the West Coast premiere of “To Shiver the Sky\,” a musical journey celebrating the spirit of exploration and mankind’s quest to conquer the heavens. This monumental oratorio on the history of flight\, composed by Grammy Award winner Christopher Tin\, will be performed under the direction of Stephen Galván with full orchestral accompaniment\, and feature acclaimed soloists Arwen Myers (soprano) and Steven Evans-Renteria (tenor). The work sets to music various texts by the world’s greatest astronomers\, authors\, inventors\, and pilots\, including da Vinci\, Copernicus\, Jules Verne\, Amelia Earhart\, and John F. Kennedy. Also included on the program will be the world premiere of “Perfect Silence\,” a new work by composer and former ISing Assistant Conductor David Walters commissioned by ISing Choir. “Perfect Silence” is a musical exploration of how and why we come to know the universe. The concert will conclude with “We Come A-Darkly Caroling” by David Lovrien\, a compilation of Christmas favorites sprinkled with humor and wit.

Three-time Grammy winner Mark O’Connor has redefined American string music\, blending classical\, jazz\, and bluegrass into his own signature style. Joined by his wife\, violinist Maggie O’Connor\, the duo delivers dazzling fiddle tunes and soul-stirring duets that celebrate the depth and beauty of American string traditions. \nMark O’Connor began his creative journey at the feet of American fiddling legend Benny Thomasson\, and the iconic French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Today\, he has melded these influences into a new American classical music\, and is perpetuating his vision of an American School of String Playing. Mr. O’Connor has won three Grammys\, seven CMA awards and several national fiddle\, guitar and mandolin champion titles. Mr. O’Connor has composed nine concertos and two symphonies recorded by the Baltimore Symphony\, London Philharmonic\, Colorado Symphony among others. O’Connor is well-known for his chamber music including his million-selling composition “Appalachia Waltz” featuring Yo-Yo Ma for the Sony Classical label.
