SUMMARY:ISing Choir Winterfest with Big Horn Brass Trombone Consort
DESCRIPTION:ISing Choir will perform some of the most marvelously festive music of the season under the direction of Stephen Galván. The concert will feature the music of Johann Sebastian Bach\, with a movement out of the “Christmas Oratorio” along with a motet “Lobet den Herrn\, alle Heiden.” These concerts will premiere “Maria Regina Caeli” by Mr. Galván. The romantically sumptuous “Abendlied” by Josef Rheinberger and the raucous “Gaudete” by Steven Sametz will be on the program. Two pieces will commemorate the life of poet and teacher Beverly Galván with the ever-popular “Pie Jesu” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and recent arrangement of “Ubi Caritas” by Dan Forrest.  Guest artists will include the Big Horn Brass Trombone Consort and Jerry Bobbe on cello.  A double choir work\, “Alleluja\, freuet euch ihr Christen alle” by Andreas Hammerschmidt\, will be accompanied by the consort on sackbut\, an early ancestor of the modern tenor trombone. \nConcerts will be held on Saturday\, December 9th at 7:30 pm and Sunday\, December 10th at 3:00 pm at The Reser\, with convenient parking in the nearby parking garage. Tickets will be $14 which will cover the facilities and box office cost for the performances. In keeping with ISing’s mission\, the choir will be accepting separate donations (cash\, check or credit card) to support this season’s beneficiary\, Depave\, empowering disenfranchised communities to overcome social and environmental injustices and adapt to climate change through urban re-greening. \nISing’s mission is to share innovative and exceptional choral music while supporting local non-profit organizations. To date\, the choir has raised $407\,533 for worthy causes. ISing performs the finest that choral music has to offer and increases public awareness of non-profits that are making a positive impact in our community. \nThese concerts are made possible by grants from the Beaverton City Arts Program\, the Cultural Coalition of Washington County\, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

SUMMARY:The Klezmatics
DESCRIPTION:The Klezmatics are globally renowned world music superstars — and the only klezmer band to win a Grammy Award. The Klezmatics emerged out of the vibrant cultural scene of New York City’s East Village in 1986\, with klezmer steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality\, while incorporating contemporary themes such as human rights and eclectic musical influences including Arab\, African\, Latin and Balkan rhythms\, jazz and punk. In the course of over twenty years and nine albums\, they have continued making music that is wild\, mystical\, provocative\, reflective and ecstatically danceable. \n“a complete joy” —All Music Guide \nPerforming songs from Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah. \nWoody Guthrie lived in Coney Island\, Brooklyn\, across the street from his mother-in-law\, the Yiddish poet\, Aliza Greenblatt. They shared their dreams and their art\, their neighborhood and a family. \nKlezmatics trumpeter Frank London says\, “each of us found our own way to confront Woody’s poetry. The words are all his\, but the diversity of musical styles is quintessentially Klezmatic.” London says that some songs lent themselves to overtly Jewish klezmer music\, others to more American forms\, like classic dust-bowl country tunes. Some felt brand new to the musicians\, while others felt more like folks songs “that had been around forever.” The band’s influences in setting the lyrics to music ranged from sacred (Hasidic nigunim –wordless tunes often used in prayer – and Gospel) to secular (freylekhs – traditional dance music – and hoedowns).” \nArts For All tickets are available. Location and quantities may vary.\nPlease contact the box office for more information. Email boxoffice@thereser.org or Phone (971) 501-7722. \nSponsored by TriMet \n \n

SUMMARY:BORIS GILTBURG
DESCRIPTION:Boris Giltburg\, whose “pianism is ideally suited to late Beethoven … enormously pleasurable and revelatory” (BBC Music Magazine)\, opens his PPI recitals with the composer’s lyrically rhapsodic Sonata No. 31 — a work of both serene respite and operatic pathos that\, even upon first listen\, envelops the soul with its loving embrace. \nFrom a dark\, desolate opening to the heavenly ascension experienced in its final phrase\, Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor charts a journey of emotional catharsis filled with plenty of heart-racing moments\, while Rachmaninoff’s final preludes showcase the composer’s ability to create grand cinematic scenes using even the most miniature of musical forms. \n“virtuosity in service to the sublime” \nBEETHOVEN Sonata No. 31 in A-flat Major\, op. 110 \nLISZT Sonata in B Minor \n— Intermission — \nRACHMANINOFF Thirteen Preludes\, op. 32

SUMMARY:Issho Rhythm Connection
DESCRIPTION:Issho: Rhythm Connection is Portland Taiko’s first major theater production since 2019. After spending much of the last three years in virtual rehearsals and outdoor performances\, the members of Portland Taiko felt a need to reconnect: to each other\, to friends and family\, to longtime supporters and the greater community. \n“Issho\,” meaning “together” in Japanese\, represents a powerful return to the indoor stage. The performance will explore the connections possible with taiko – linking each performer with each other\, with their instruments and with everyone their sound reaches. \nThe performance will include pieces not performed in many years in addition to fan favorites. The world–class Patricia Reser Center of the Arts is the perfect space to present this wide range of compositions\, from intricate numbers featuring just two drummers\, to beautiful combinations of taiko with violin and flute\, to thunderous full ensemble pieces. \nPortland Taiko blends the tradition of Japanese taiko drumming with a sense of Asian American identity\, creativity and empowerment. The group has headlined at arts festivals and concert halls and performed at hundreds of schools and community events. In recent months\, Portland Taiko has performed at Oregon Rises Above Hate\, Portland’s Refuge Day Walk\, the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Memorial Service and the Rose Festival Starlight Parade. \nFor those who have never seen taiko before\, Issho will be an excellent introduction. Those already familiar with taiko can look forward to intricate rhythms\, exciting choreography and abundant energy and enthusiasm from the crowd and performers. \nPhoto by: Mark Shigenaga

SUMMARY:Brad Mehldau Trio
DESCRIPTION:One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano\, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path\, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration\, classical romanticism and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader to major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny\, Renee Fleming\, and Joshua Redman\, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms\, in both trio (with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums) and solo settings\, has seen brilliant re-workings of songs by contemporary songwriters like The Beatles\, Cole Porter\, Radiohead\, Paul Simon\, Gershwin and Nick Drake; alongside the ever evolving breath of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training\, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times). \n

SUMMARY:Jad Abumrad: How to Talk to a Human
DESCRIPTION:How to Talk to a Human \nIn this innovative and timely talk\, Abumrad explores the art of conversation. For the last year\, he’s been deep diving into the art of interviewing.  Not just how journalists in his industry do it\, but how do therapists do it?  Salespeople?  Hostage negotiators?  Social workers?  What are the techniques we can all steal and use in our own lives when having difficult conversations with fellow humans? He’ll share insights\, play clips and even lead the audience through a few interactive games. \nMacArthur Fellow & creator of Public Radio’s Radiolab \nJad Abumrad is the creator and former host of Radiolab\, a public radio program broadcast on nearly 600 stations across the nation and downloaded more than 12 million times a month as a podcast. Abumrad hosts Everything. Together. Radio on Apple Music Hits. Each episode offers a kaleidoscopic mix of uptempo\, electro\, dance\, funk\, hip-hop\, experimental noise\, soul\, and everything in between. \nAbumrad employs his dual backgrounds as composer and journalist to create what’s been called “a new aesthetic” in broadcast journalism. He orchestrates dialogue\, music\, interviews and sounds into compelling documentaries that draw listeners into investigations of otherwise intimidating topics\, such as the nature of numbers\, the evolution of altruism\, or the legal foundation for the war on terror. \nHe’s won three George Foster Peabody Awards\, and in 2011 Abumrad was honored as a MacArthur Fellow (also known as the Genius Grant).  The MacArthur Foundation website says:  “Abumrad is inspiring boundless curiosity within a new generation of listeners and experimenting with sound to find ever more effective and entertaining ways to explain ideas and tell a story.” \nJad also created and hosted three seasons of More Perfect\, a series about untold stories of the Supreme Court\, which The New York Times called “…possibly the most mesmerizing podcast.”  And in 2019\, Jad Abumrad created Dolly Parton’s America (along with osm Audio’s Shima Oliaee) a Peabody Award-winning 9-part series that explores a divided America through the life and music of one its greatest icons.   Alongside his radio work\, Abumrad continues to work as a composer and remixer and is currently hosting a radio show on Apple Music. In April 2022 Jad began a joint appointment at Vanderbilt University as a Distinguished Research Professor of Cinema and Media Arts and of Communication of Science and Technology at the College of Arts and Science\, and he will have an advisory role with Vanderbilt’s Communications and Marketing team. \nSponsored by The Reser Family Foundation \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret w/ Alan Cumming and Ari Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:We have added a second performance of Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret on Sunday\, November 5 at 7 pm. \nAlan Cumming (Cabaret\, The Good Wife) and Ari Shapiro (NPR’s All Things Considered\, Pink Martini)  both transport audiences to other worlds through their stories. Now\, they’re joining forces in SONG. Witness the exclusive debut of their new evening of tunes and tall tales titled “Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret”. Musical direction by Henry Koperski. \n“A friend of Ari Shapiro’s once told him\, unlike a musical revue\, a cabaret is visceral. It comes alive. It needs to evolve\, to go somewhere unpredictable and take the audience along for the ride…Perhaps after a pandemic-induced hiatus\, it’s a precious opportunity to spend time in a room laughing with strangers.” — Cristela Guerra\, WBUR \nIn a statement\, Cumming said\, “I’ve got to know Ari over the last few years\, both socially and when he interviewed me for a couple of events. The last time was an evening in D.C.\, and by the end of it I realized our chemistry and the unusual combo of us\, as well as the fact that Ari has an amazing voice\, would make for a really great cabaret show. And kapow! We’re doing it! What I love most is it’s fresh and ever-changing.” \nShapiro added\, “When Alan first suggested that we create a show together\, I didn’t quite believe him. Then as we started to dig in to this collaboration\, I realized how much our professional lives actually complement each other.
