SUMMARY:Yearning for Christmas
DESCRIPTION:ISing Choir Yearning for Christmas \nAt a time when there is such a desire to “get back to normal\,” coming out of the global pandemic\, we yearn for the Christmas of old – the gathering of friends to listen to and sing songs of the season\, enjoy the warmth of the holidays\, and celebrate the midwinter.  This sense of yearning guided ISing Choir in the program selection for their Yearning for Christmas concert that will be presented at the Patricia Reser Reser Center for the Arts on December 3 and 4. \nISing\, under the direction of Stephen Galván\, will be joined by members of the Big Horn Brass Ensemble\, organist Dan Miller\, and pianist Yvonne Yang in a celebration of the season which includes familiar tunes like “Joy to the world\,” “Angels we have heard on high\,” and “The snow lay on the ground” in new arrangements. The choir will also share the stage with ICAN Production Assistant on All Classical Portland\, Steven Joinson\, who will narrate “Brother Heinrich’s Christmas”. Honoring the people of Ukraine\, the choir will perform two Ukrainian pieces\, one of which is familiar to many as “Carol of the Bells.”  The concert will conclude with the electrifying “Gloria” by John Rutter. \nConcerts will be held on Saturday\, December 3rd at 7:30 pm and Sunday\, December 4th at 3:00 pm at The Reser\, with convenient parking in the nearby parking garage. Tickets will be $10 which will cover the facilities and box office cost for the performances. In keeping with ISing’s mission\, the choir will be accepting separate donations (cash\, check\, or credit card) to support this season’s beneficiary\, the Parker Bounds Johnson Foundation. The foundation serves at-risk young people and their families through Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare programs and beyond. Your tax-free contribution to the Parker Bounds Johnson Foundation will help facilitate the use of wilderness therapy to help youth deal with life and death issues. \nISing’s mission is to share innovative and exceptional choral music while supporting local non-profit organizations. To date\, the choir has raised $384\,370 for worthy causes. ISing performs the finest that choral music has to offer and increases public awareness of non-profits that are making a positive impact in our community. \nThese concerts are made possible by grants from the Beaverton City Arts Program\, the Cultural Coalition of Washington County\, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

SUMMARY:Ron Artis II & Thunderstorm Artis
DESCRIPTION:Ron Artis II \nRon Artis II is a multi-instrumentalist who grew up in Hawaii among an exceptionally musical family. The second oldest of 10 other siblings\, Ron was surrounded by artists and musicians daily. In fact\, growing up\, Ron thought it was weird that everybody else didn’t have ten siblings running around with them every day. They even had an “Artis Family Band” and when they weren’t off painting\, at the beach\, they were learning their instruments. \nFull band\, trio or solo\, Ron has performed and collaborated with Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac)\, Jack Johnson\, Jake Shimabukuro\, Booker T Jones\, Eric Krasno (Soulive\, Lettuce) and G Love among others. If this wasn’t a rich line-up of names\, go spend a few moments reading the lyrics to Ron’s songs. Each song is laced with intention\, deep conviction\, story\, and a heart that has truly been there. It makes sense why Ron is often heard talking [and singing] about “walking the walk.” “I really try to write music that can be helpful not only for our generation\, but for life in general.” \nRon has been married to his beautiful wife Julia for 9 years and counting. They have 4 lovely [and musically inclined] daughters\, with a fifth on the way! If you’ve been to one of Ron’s shows\, then you may have had the immense pleasure of seeing a daughter or two take to the stage with her father. In fact\, being on the road is a family affair. Ron comments\, “It’s so easy to lose touch with life and lose touch with the things that inspired you originally to write music and do things. I can walk off stage at a festival with tons of people having a great time\, and then I go backstage and change my daughter’s diaper! It keeps life really in perspective of what’s important — I really enjoy this … They really keep me grounded and keep my heart full.” \nWith 4 studio albums\, 60+ songs\, 1000s of flights\, 100\,000s of diapers\, and 15 countries\, Ron and his family [full band included] continue to live by preparation and faith. Holding each day and person they meet as with immense privilege\, not to be taken for granted\, they look forward to meeting and delighting audiences around the world. \nThunderstorm Artis \nThunderstorm learned at a very young age to play piano\, guitar\, harp and percussion from his father Ron Artis and mother Victoria. Ron was a Motown session player who played keyboards on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” His mother Victoria was also a member of the Motown family\, touring as a vocalist with Lena Horne\, and many other Motown greats. Thunderstorm is a featured artist at the Wanderlust Festivals throughout North America and currently tours solo. He has toured for many years with his brother Ron Artis II\, who is one of the hottest guitar players out there today. Thunderstorm has also played with Jack Johnson\, Booker T\, and Mike Love. Thunderstorm’s music crosses many genres including Folk\, Rock\, Soul and Country. At his concerts he has been known to jump into Bowie\, Beatles\, Elton John and a heart wrenching version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” \nNo matter what Thunderstorm sings or writes he does it from his heart. His life experience has given him plenty of material to share. Thunderstorm does not consider his music as notes on a page but rather a window into his heart. He believes that through his music he can make our world a better place by lifting the hearts of others. Thunderstorm’s upbeat music and infectious smile bring people to their feet at every stop. \nReser Presents performances no longer require masks for entry. While face masks are no longer mandatory\, they are highly encouraged.\nIn addition\, COVID-19 vaccine proof is no longer a condition of entry. \nPerformance runtime:\nFirst: Set 60 min\nIntermission: 20 min\nSecond Set: 90 min \nSponsored by TriMet.

SUMMARY:Fezziwig’s Fortune
DESCRIPTION:Anonymous Theatre’s Fezziwig’s Fortune by Josie Seid and Sara Jean Accuardi. \nWritten by local playwrights Josie Seid and Sara Jean Accuardi\, this world-premiere play lifts Mr. Fezziwig from the pages of A Christmas Carol to tell a story all his own. Set after the jubilant Christmas ball where we meet young Scrooge’s benevolent employer in Dickens’s tale\, this story looks past Fezziwig’s merry smile to find a man who may be in need of a Christmas miracle all of his own. Fezziwig’s Fortune is an origin story about family\, forgiveness\, and the importance of what ties us together. \nAbout Anonymous Theatre Company \nAuditions are held. The play is cast… in secret. No one knows who is in the show. Even cast members don’t know who else is in the show. Cast members rehearse individually and do not reveal their participation in the show or learn anything about the identity of the rest of the cast. On the night of the performance\, the actors arrive at the theatre as if they are members of the audience. They take their seats. They read their programs. They chat with their neighbors. The house lights dim and the play begins… with each actor delivering their first line from their audience as they reveal themselves. The audience gets to see the story happen as if it is happening for the first time… because it actually is happening for the first time. \n“It was theater. It was comedy. It was song and dance. And from the reaction of the audience\, it was sports all the way. The sold-out crowd clapped and roared and hollered\, cheering loudly every time an actor rose from among the audience\, shouted out a line of dialogue\, and hustled up to the stage to play ball with the rest of the cast. It was edge-of-the-seat stuff\, a little like watching game seven of the NBA championships with the outcome still on the line.” – Oregon ArtsWatch \n“It’s like going to a tent revival.” – Willamette Week \n“Actors rarely get to perform these kind of exhilarating stunts\, and audiences rarely get to see them.” – Portland Mercury \n“Fezziwig’s Fortune is technically a prequel to A Christmas Carol\, but that description is both accurate and inadequate. The play is something more… something sadder\, subtler\, and more beautiful… Fezziwig’s Fortune is a light unto itself.” – Oregon ArtsWatch \nhttps://www.anonymoustheatre.org/ \nPerformance run time:\nAct 1: 90 min\nIntermission: 20 min.\nAct 2: 45 min \nThis performance is General Admission Seating (non-reserved).

SUMMARY:Mark O’Connor’s An Appalachian Christmas
DESCRIPTION:We are monitoring the weather forecast closely. As of now\, The Reser Presents performance of Mark O’Connor’s Appalachian Christmas will go on as scheduled Friday\, December 23. Weather conditions are evaluated continually. Please continue to check the website and social media channels for the most up-to-date information regarding performance status. \n– \nThree-time Grammy winning composer and fiddler Mark O’Connor has created several arrangements of Christmas classics and fashions a wondrous mixture of both instrumental and vocal music in bluegrass and other American music genres. Concertgoers are treated to fresh takes on traditional songs with a few original compositions included. His renditions are playful and joyous\, but can be strikingly earnest too. \nMark O’Connor’s touring ensemble includes his wife Maggie O’Connor on fiddle and vocals as well as a variety of guest musicians on each tour. Having toured An Appalachian Christmas nine consecutive years\, O’Connor and his ensemble have a dynamic energy on stage that bring their individual expertise to holiday themes and classics in the most delightful and musically satisfying way! \nThere is no more aching line in contemporary American music than the melody in his Appalachia Waltz\, and the joy of his mandolin duet with his son in Macedonia\, a song Mark wrote years ago\, was pure delight. O’Connor is a composer and arranger of the highest order\, creating intriguing harmonies and rhythms in recognizable folk music. \nHe elevates a music with humble beginnings to impeccable elegance\, creating a whole different category. While the instrumentation is traditional in country music\, his deft treatment of the songs and choice of performers brings out unexpected elements. He’s more than a performer; he’s a suitor to the music\, to the instruments\, a passionate devotee of traditional forms and tools\, and his adoration is evident in every note he writes and every chord he plays. \nRuntime:\n45 min first set\n20 min intermission\n45 min second set

Closing the program is Nikolai Medtner’s “Night Wind” Sonata — a relentless frenzy of menacing\, nightmarish music that tests the performer’s physical and expressive limits. \nRuntime: 70 min no intermission \nRead our Covid Guidelines for attending our concerts/events.\nRead Program Notes \n

SUMMARY:Blind Boys of Alabama
DESCRIPTION:The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter\, who leads the group today)\, the band has persevered through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world. \nTouring throughout the South during the Jim Crow era of the 1940s and 1950s\, the Blind Boys flourished thanks to their unique sound\, which blended the close harmonies of early jubilee gospel with the more fervent improvisations of hard gospel. In the early 1960s\, the band sang at benefits for Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and were a part of the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement. But as the years passed\, gospel fans started to drift away and follow the many singers who had originated in the church but were now recording secular popular music. And the Blind Boys\, who refused many offers to ‘cross over’ to secular music\, also saw their audiences dwindle. However\, the Blind Boys persevered and their time came again\, starting in the 1980s with their starring role in the Obie Award-winning musical “The Gospel at Colonus\,” which began a new chapter in their incredible history. It’s almost unbelievable that a group of blind\, African-American singers\, who started out touring during a time of whites-only bathrooms\, restaurants and hotels\, went on to win five Grammy® Awards\, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy\, be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame\, and to perform at the White House for three different presidents. \nFew would have expected them to still be going strong—stronger than ever\, even—so many years after they first joined voices\, but they’ve proved as productive and as musically ambitious in recent years as they did in the beginning. In 2001\, they released Spirit of the Century on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label\, mixing traditional church tunes with songs by Tom Waits and the Rolling Stones\, and won the first of their Grammy Awards. The next year they backed Gabriel on his album Up and joined him on a world tour\, although a bigger break may have come when David Simon chose their cover of Waits’ ‘Way Down in the Hole’ as the theme song for the first season of HBO’s acclaimed series The Wire. Subsequent Grammy-winning albums have found them working with the likes of Ben Harper\, Robert Randolph\, Aaron Neville\, Mavis Staples\, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Allen Toussaint and Willie Nelson. \nIn 2013 the band worked with Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) to release I’ll Find A Way\, a powerful collection of gospel and spiritual songs new and old\, featuring some of the Blind Boys’ most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys fans\, including Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs\, Patty Griffin\, and Justin Vernon himself. In 2014 the Blind Boys released Talkin’ Christmas!\, a collaboration with Taj Mahal\, that continued the band’s streak of creating original and interesting work. It includes new versions of Christmas standards\, covers of hidden gospel gems\, and seven brand-new holiday songs featuring Money Mark on keyboards\, Taj Mahal on vocals and songwriting collaborations with Stax Records soul legend William Bell. \nIn 2017 the Blind Boys released Almost Home on the band’s own BBOA Records label\, in collaboration with Amazon Music. The 12-song collection serves as a fitting capstone to a seven-decade career that has both defined the sound of the American South and pushed it forward from the 20th century and into the 21st. Almost Home was recorded over four different sessions with four different GRAMMY-winning producers in four different cities. John Leventhal recorded the Blind Boys and their band in New York City\, Vance Powell in Nashville\, Chris Goldsmith in Seattle\, and Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. The album is composed primarily of original songs which focus on the remarkable journey of the band’s two surviving original members at the time\, long-time leader Clarence Fountain (who has since passed away)\, and current leader Jimmy Carter. It features songwriting contributions from an exceptional collection of artists including Valerie June\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Phil Cook\, John Leventhal\, Marc Cohn\, Ruthie Foster\, and more. Almost Home succeeds in looking backwards\, while still sounding as vital and modern as ever. \n2019 brought them back together with Marc Cohn and producer John Leventhal for Work To Do\, a unique collection that combines the songwriting talents of Marc Cohn with the soul-stirring harmonies of the Blind Boys which falls on the heels of more than a year of live collaborative dates. Work To Do is comprised of three studio tracks by Cohn and the Blind Boys (two originals\, including the title track\, and a version of the gospel standard “Walk In Jerusalem”) plus seven intimate live performances recorded at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook\, CT\, during a taping of the PBS series The Kate. Original plans were to release an EP containing the studio tracks\, but the excitement and magic captured during the taping inspired the decision to create this unique hybrid album. \nSince they released their debut single\, “I Can See Everybody’s Mother But Mine\,” on the iconic Veejay label in 1948\, the Blind Boys have been hailed as “gospel titans” by Rolling Stone and have collaborated with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Prince and Lou Reed\, and performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. The New York Times said that they “came to epitomize what is known as jubilee singing\, a livelier breed of gospel music\,” adding that “they made it zestier still by adding jazz and blues idioms and turning up the volume\, creating a sound…like the rock ‘n’ roll that grew out of it.” The New Yorker simply called them “legendary.” \nThe Blind Boys’ live shows are roof-raising musical events that appeal to audiences of all cultures\, as evidenced by an international itinerary that has taken them to virtually every continent. The Blind Boys of Alabama have attained the highest levels of achievement in a career that spans over 75 years and shows no signs of diminishing. \nRuntime: 90 min. No intermission.

SUMMARY:PitchBlack
DESCRIPTION:Built Oregon presents PitchBlack 2023 \nElevating\, amplifying\, and supporting Black businesses \nThe PitchBlack pitch competition gives Black entrepreneurs a platform to connect with the broader startup ecosystem — while also awarding them with cash prizes to help their concepts flourish. \nThis year’s event will be held at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts – the first time the event has been held on the west side of the metro area. \n\nWhat if the ‘Whitest City in America’ led the way in bridging the support and amplification of Black-owned businesses? What if the capital talks shift from simply being about money and moved toward the importance of social capital as well? \nThose ideas led Stephen Green to launch the first PitchBlack in Portland\, Oregon\, in 2015\, and since that time\, Portland has been home to five editions of the event. \nAnd this is only the beginning. What started in Portland has expanded to include events in Seattle\, Austin\, and Philadelphia. To date\, 100 founders have pitched their ideas\, more than 1000 people have attended the combined events\, and more than $100\,000 has gone directly to the winning companies. \nIn addition\, the Portland winners alone have gone on to raise an additional $40M in funding since 2015. \n“What started a party to celebrate some founders has grown into a beacon for how cities around the country can unearth\, connect and lift up the talent that already exists in their midst.” – Stephen Green \nAbout Pitch Black \nRuntime: 90 min

SUMMARY:BILL FRISELL FOUR
DESCRIPTION:Bill Frisell Four featuring Gerald Clayton\, Gregory Tardy\, Rudy Royston. \nPresented by PDX Jazz \n\n\n\n\nBill Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings\, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade”. \nTwo years after issuing his acclaimed trio album Valentine\, GRAMMY Award-winning guitarist and composer Bill Frisell returns with Four\, a stunning meditation on loss\, renewal\, and those mysterious inventions of friendship. Frisell’s third album for Blue Note Records proffers new interpretations of previously recorded originals as well as nine new tunes. The session brings together artists of independent spirits and like minds: Blue Note stablemates Gerald Clayton on piano and Johnathan Blake on drums\, and longtime collaborator Greg Tardy on saxophone\, clarinet\, and bass clarinet.  \nFor generations\, critics and peers have recognized Frisell as one of the music’s most treasured participants. Over the years\, he’s garnered praise and attention for his playing as well as the anatomy of his compositions – how he structures a form around often a simple melody or progression\, creating a gesture at once complex and elemental. Four presents this side of his artistry at its most intuitive. \nDuring the lockdown\, like so many prolific artists\, Frisell turned inward. “It was traumatic not to be with people\,” he says\, “so I picked up my guitar\, and my guitar saved me.” For those months\, he wrote stacks of melodies and compositional ideas. By the time he scheduled Four’srecording sessions\, he’d amassed piles of notebooks filled with fragmented music. Laying little more than a sketch of information before his fellow artists\, Frisell encouraged a kind of spontaneous\, cooperative orchestration.  \nWhile Frisell and Tardy have enjoyed a long association of mutual respect and friendship\, the former wondered how their musical familiarity might reactivate alongside two newer energies. Frisell met Clayton when Charles Lloyd asked the guitarist to sit in at a festival some years ago. “That was the first time I’d really played with Gerald\,” he says. “I could feel that trust and respect just instantly.” When Clayton joined Frisell’s trio as a guest during a run at the Vanguard\, their connection intensified. “He would transform things that I’ve played a thousand times\, find pathways through it that I never heard anyone do before.” Similarly\, Frisell felt an immediate kinship when he sat in on a date with Blake.  \nAspects of Four reflect Frisell’s affection for Americana\, and skilled saturation of blues. But what’s poised to give the record its staying is less tangible. “The album is capturing this first moment in time when we were\, all four\, together\, playing these songs\,” he says. “Music is incredible that way because we’ll never play these songs this way again. Once we start playing them live\, they’ll change.”

SUMMARY:American Strings: An Evening with Guy Davis
DESCRIPTION:American Strings: An Evening with Guy Davis. \nHosted by Bob Santelli\, rock historian and Oregon State University’s director of popular music and performing arts\, the American Strings series brings musicians from around the country for an in-depth look at the role stringed instruments play in American music. Each event includes a conversation and live performance from the invited artists. \nSantelli will sit down with two-time\, back-to-back Grammy nominee for Best Traditional Blues\, a musician\, actor\, author\, and songwriter\, Guy Davis and talk about his career\, music\, and creative process. The interview will be followed by a live performance. \nRun time: 90 min. No intermission. \nGuy uses a blend of Roots\, Blues\, Folk\, Rock\, Rap\, Spoken Word\, and World Music to comment on\, and address the frustrations of social injustice\, touching on historical events\, and common life struggles. His background in theater is pronounced through the lyrical storytelling of songs “God’s Gonna Make Things Over” about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre\, “Welcome to My World”\, and “Got Your Letter In My Pocket”. His storytelling is sometimes painful\, deep\, and real\, an earthy contrast to modern-day commercial music\, meant to create thought\, underlined by gentle tones from his guitar or banjo fingerpicking. \nGuy won “Keeping The Blues Alive” Award\, and was nominated by The Blues Foundation for Best Acoustic Album of the Year\, Best Acoustic Artist of the Year\, and Best Instrumentalist. In fact\, he’s been nominated nearly two dozen times by the Blues Foundation. \nAmong hundreds of newspaper appearances\, he’s also been featured in articles or reviews by New York Times\, Village Voice\, Boston Globe\, Pulse Magazine\, Blues Magazine\, Acoustic Guitar\, Dirty Linen\, Songlines\, Blues Blast Magazine\, Living Blues\, Down At the Crossroads\, The San Francisco Chronicle\, Association For Independent Music (formerly NAIRD)\, Playboy Magazine\, National Public Radio (NPR)\, “Folk Alley”\, and Sirius. \nWhen asked about his experience as a performer\, Guy has replied\, “There is no tale so tall that I cannot tell it\, nor song so sweet that I cannot sing it.”
