SUMMARY:Duo Amal\, 2 Pianos w/ Yaron Kohlberg & Bishara Haroni
DESCRIPTION:“Hope\, poetry\, ancient longing.” \nRecognized for their “soulful and dynamic” musicality\, Duo Amal has captivated audiences worldwide since bursting onto the scene in 2014. The Israeli-Palestinian pianists Yaron Kohlberg and Bishara Haroni epitomize the true meaning of Amal (hope\, in Arabic). The energetic duo has curated a program of works embodying a collective dream of hope swirled in poetry and longing. \nThe recital will begin with Schubert’s fantasy\, which displays melancholic longing\, followed by a potpourri of musical styles that pepper Milhaud’s Scaramouche. The Adagio from Khachaturian’s ballet Spartacus taps into a vivid love scene set in ancient Greece\, while Shostakovich’s concertino displays the dissonance between the prophetic and the serene. Tying it all together is Rachmaninoff’s Suite No. 1\, each movement painting musical brushstrokes from a peaceful and intimate barcarolle to a bombastic celebration. \nSCHUBERT\nFantasy for Four Hands\, D. 940 \nMILHAUD\nScaramouche \nARAM KHACHATURIAN\nAdagio from Spartacus Sabre Dance \nSHOSTAKOVICH\nConcertino \nRACHMANINOV\nSuite No. 1

Towering ominously among the shadows of the Carpathian Mountains\, Castle Dracula strikes fear into the hearts of the Transylvanian villagers below. Bela Lugosi\, starring as the screen’s most popular vampire Count Dracula\, together with horror specialist Director Tod Browning\, create the film’s eerie and chilling mood. Dracula remains a masterpiece not only of the genre\, but for all time. \nThe original film was released with no musical soundtrack apart from a brief excerpt of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake used in the opening credits and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger during a scene at the opera. In 1998 Philip Glass was tasked with creating a new score for the re-release of the film which was premiered by the Kronos Quartet and Michael Riesman. \nEnsemble:\nMichael Reisman\, guest director/piano\nIan Scarfe\, piano\nGreg Ewer\, violin\nLing Ling Huang\, violin\nWendy Richman\, viola\nValdine Ritchie Mishkin\, cello \nTwo shows! \nOctober 30\, 2024 at 7 PM\nOctober 30\, 2024 at 9 PM \n  \n \nSponsored by Hillsboro Hops

SUMMARY:Caroline Shaw and Gabriel Kahane: Hexagons
DESCRIPTION:Both Caroline Shaw and Gabriel Kahane are respected as performers and contemporary composers whose work exists at the intersection of art and social practice. Now\, the two embark on their first large-scale collaboration after working together for more than a decade. \nHexagons is a new work\, co-commissioned by the Oregon Symphony\, inspired by the magical realism of Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges’s 1939 short story\, “The Library of Babel.” In this enigmatic narrative\, Borges conjures a captivating and perplexing universe where the notion of infinity collides with the fragility of human understanding. Randomly arranged books\, each containing exactly 410 pages\, fill the Library of Babel’s infinite expanse of interlocking hexagonal rooms\, encompassing all knowledge that currently exists or may exist in the future while paradoxically offering no true enlightenment. Shaw and Kahane invite audiences to contemplate the joy\, grief\, wonder\, and bewilderment that spring from a life oversaturated in information. \nGabriel Kahane is a musician and storyteller. Highlights of this season include duo tours with fellow composer/performer Caroline Shaw in the U.S. and Europe; the premiere of an orchestral oratorio\, co- commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony and Oregon Symphony\, chronicling the aftermath of the 2020 Almeda Wildfire; a solo debut with the Orchestre National de Lyon; and his San Francisco conducting debut with Carla Kihlstedt’s Twenty-six Little Deaths. Heirloom\, a piano concerto written for his father\, Jeffrey Kahane\, will be released this fall by Nonesuch Records. Gabriel has released five albums as a singer-songwriter\, and has collaborated with artists including Phoebe Bridgers\, Sufjan Stevens\, Sylvan Esso\, the Danish String Quartet\, Anthony McGill\, and Pekka Kuusisto\, his bandmate in the duo ‘Council.’ Kahane’s writings on music\, literature\, and politics can be found at http://gabrielkahane.substack.com. He lives in Portland\, Oregon\, with his family. \nCaroline Shaw is a musician who moves among roles\, genres\, and mediums\, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed. She is the recipient of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music\, several Grammy awards\, an honorary doctorate from Yale\, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. She has worked with a range of artists including Rosalía\, Renée Fleming\, and Yo Yo Ma\, and she has contributed music to films and tv series including Fleishman is in Trouble\, Bombshell\, Yellowjackets\, Maid\, Dark\, and Beyonce’s Homecoming. Her favorite color is yellow\, and her favorite smell is rosemary. \nCommissioned by Newman Center for the Performing Arts\, San Francisco Performances\, University Musical Society\, Duke Arts\, Philharmonie de Paris\, Philharmonic Society of Orange County\, Wigmore Hall\, and the Oregon Symphony. \nOregon Symphony co-commission sponsored by Tim & Sarah Wright \nSponsored by Ronni Lacroute

SUMMARY:Portugal. The Man: A Live Recording Experience
DESCRIPTION:An Unforgettable Live Recording Experience and Benefit Concert Featuring: Grammy Award Winning Portugal. The Man. \nJoin us for an intimate evening with Grammy award winning Portugal. The Man. This one-night-only experience features a special live recording and an opportunity to come together as a community to support a vital cause\, Frances Changed My Life. All ticket sales will help drive advancements in medical research and bring hope to those affected by this condition. Join us for an extraordinary night of celebration\, community and Rock history in the making. \nABOUT PORTUGAL. THE MAN: \nOver the past decade\, Portugal. The Man has established themselves as one of rock’s most prized possessions and a live performance phenomenon; having rocked over 1\,600 shows and a storied reputation as festival favorites. \nOriginally heralding from Alaska\, the Portland-based band soared to new heights in 2017 with the release of their now RIAA certified-Platinum album\, Woodstock. The album was marked by the astounding success of their infectious single\, “Feel It Still\,” which earned the group a plethora of new accolades – including a GRAMMY for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance\,” a 7x RIAA Platinum certification\, a record setting 26-week residency at #1\, which is the longest running #1 in Alternative Radio History. \nAlongside the shine of their myriad of musical accomplishments lies the group’s long-standing passion for social justice. Throughout their career\, the band has consistently exemplified how to deeply commit to both artistry and activism. This ultimately inspired them to officially launch PTM Foundation in 2020\, focused on universal issues related to human rights\, community health\, and the environment\, with an emphasis on causes directly impacting Indigenous Peoples\, including Alaska Native Health (providing the highest quality of health services for Alaska Native people) and Seeding Sovereignty (radicalizing and disrupting colonized spaces through land\, body\, food sovereignty work and more). \nPortugal. The Man have also partnered with an array of organizations such as National Coalition Against Censorship\, The Skatepark Project (helping communities build public skate parks for youth in underserved communities)\, March for Our Lives (Gun Reform)\, Keep Oregon Well (Mental Health)\, and Protect Our Winters (Climate Change)\, to name just a few. In 2022\, the band furthered their passion for activism when they launched PTM’s NIGHT OUT initiative – supporting disabled fans requiring ADA access. \nABOUT FRANCES CHANGED MY LIFE: \nIn 2021\, John and Zoe’s daughter\, Frances Gourley was diagnosed with a one in a billion genetic disease called DHDDS. Kids with DHDDS and other rare\, neurodegenerative diseases experience the symptoms of mental and physical decline that are usually associated with diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Their debilitating effects include confusion\, seizures\, uncontrollable movements\, and even dementia in very young kids. \n70% of rare diseases are diagnosed in childhood and more than 90% of rare diseases including Frances’ are without an FDA approved treatment. This means that even with great healthcare plans\, there’s no actual treatment protocol for insurance to cover. It’s up to parents & families to seek out and independently fund research and development of treatments\, medicines\, and therapies they hope will save their kids’ lives. \nJohn and Zoe\, like many other parents of rare diseases\, are in an urgent race against the clock to help save their daughter’s life and prevent further deterioration of her mental and physical capacities while they desperately search for a cure. \nYour support will help them fund research and development of breakthrough therapies that will lead to life-saving treatments for Frances and the 150M kids around the world living with rare diseases. \nFor more info or to make a donation\, visit: https://www.franceschangedmylife.com/. \nABOUT THE MUSIC TIME FOUNDATION:    \nMusic Time began in 1992 as a family owned Record Store in Downtown Beaverton. Over the decades Music Time grew into a community cornerstone destination where people from around the world visited for an experience and connection through music. Bringing together a community with a passion for sound preservation & storytelling while inspiring the next generation of music lovers to keep the music playing for the next\, The Music Time Family is proud to present: Portugal.
