SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes of History: An Evening with David Hume Kennerly
DESCRIPTION:Join Oregon History Maker and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly on a magical mystery tour through some of the major events of the past fifty-plus years as seen through his eyes and camera. From the night Robert Kennedy was shot\, to the battlefields of Vietnam\, to Watergate and the resignation of Nixon\, Kennerly’s photography has captured countless moments in history. This talk will transport you to the room where President Ford ended the Vietnam War\, Egyptian President Sadat’s historic trip to Israel\, the horrors of Jonestown\, Reagan and Gorbachev’s Fireside Summit in Geneva\, the governor’s mansion with George W. Bush as the 2000 election ended in a tie\, an elevator with President and Mrs. Obama on inaugural night\, and with Trump the night he won the presidential election in 2016. Kennerly was there for all of that and more\, and he will take you along for the photographic ride of your life. \nDavid Hume Kennerly has been a photographer on the front lines of history for more than 50 years. At 25\, he became one of the youngest winners of the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism. The 1972 award for Feature Photography recognized his work from the previous year\, and included images of the Vietnam and Cambodia wars\, refugees escaping from East Pakistan into India\, and the Ali v. Frazier “Fight of the Century” World Heavyweight Championship at Madison Square Garden. Two years later\, Kennerly was appointed President Gerald R. Ford’s Personal White House Photographer. \nKennerly’s photos have appeared on more than fifty major magazine covers\, and he has documented history in more than a hundred countries. He has photographed eleven U.S. presidents\, covered thirteen presidential campaigns\, served as a contributing editor for Newsweek magazine for ten years\, and was a contributing photographer for Time & Life magazines. American Photo Magazine named Kennerly “One of the 100 Most Important People in Photography.” \nIn 2019\, The University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography acquired the David Hume Kennerly Archive. It features almost one million images\, prints\, objects\, memorabilia\, correspondence\, and documents dating back to 1957. His work joins that of Ansel Adams\, Edward Weston\, Richard Avedon\, W. Eugene Smith\, and scores of other legendary photographers. The Oregon Historical Society honored Kennerly as a History Maker in 2016\, an award presented annually to contemporary individuals and organizations that are positively shaping the history\, culture\, and landscape of Oregon. In 2018\, University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins appointed Kennerly the university’s first Presidential Scholar. \n$36 / $26 for OHS members \nThis performance is 90 min with no intermission.

SUMMARY:Michael Kaeshammer
DESCRIPTION:Michael Kaeshammer has invested a lot – countless hours at the keyboard\, hundreds of recordings\, thousands of live performances\, millions of miles in the air and on the road – all in pursuit of a mastery of 12 notes across 88 keys. But for the acclaimed Canadian pianist and singer\, there is no set destination\, no achievable end point on his path; it’s all about the journey itself\, and that journey will always be ongoing. \nOver the course of decades as a professional performer\, Kaeshammer has developed a signature blend of classical\, jazz\, blues\, and boogie-woogie with effortless pop hooks for a compelling crossover style that’s immediately engaging yet impressively substantial. \n“When I play\, I don’t worry about if it’s jazz or pop or classical or whatever; I just play what I hear and let the music decide what it wants to be\,” begins Kaeshammer. “Sure\, there are different styles\, different eras\, different approaches\, but when you really look at it\, it’s all just music based on 12 notes.” \nBorn and raised in Germany\, Kaeshammer began performing club\, theatre\, and festival stages throughout Europe in his early teens and continued on that trajectory after emigrating to Canada’s West Coast with his family in the mid-‘90s. His first studio album\, Blue Keys\, dropped in 1996 and spurred a consistent sequence of heralded releases and high-profile international performances. Through it all\, the world watched as he grew from child prodigy to full-fledged phenom; from unparalleled pianist to virtuosic singer-songwriter. \nMichael’s many experiences have helped to hone his skills as a vocalist and lyricist to the point that Kaeshammer is now pushing firmly into the realm of pop crossover as exemplified with his latest collection\, Turn It Up. Expected in the Spring of 2023\, the 10-track collection finds Kaeshammer building on his mastery of the keyboard with deft and dynamic tinges of modern pop. The result is simultaneously his most ambitious and accessible offering to date\, its songs and stories both instantly engaging yet deserving of a deep\, disarming dive. \nFans will soon get to enjoy more fruits from that harvest as Kaeshammer returns to the road with a string of highly anticipated performances across Canada and the U.S. to close out 2022\, followed by a tour of Germany in the spring of 2023. \nTurn It Up seems like a particularly fitting label for this exciting new stage in an already-illustrious career; however\, despite all the achievements and accolades – the JUNO Awards\, the shows on iconic stages with international stars and symphony orchestras\, the strings of stellar reviews from major media outlets – Michael Kaeshammer doesn’t rest on his laurels; these are merely temporary stops on his journey\, and as always\, he’s solely focused on reaching the next one\, and then the one after that. \nMICHAEL KAESHAMMER – American Public Television (Trailer 2020) \n \n“Stop That Train”

This comedy hour will bring you closer to many of your favorite classical musicians from around Portland that are\, by coincidence\, really really funny! \nThe Amadeus Chamber Orchestra was founded by Adam LaMotte in 2018. It presents intimate but powerful performances. As a conductor-less chamber orchestra\, its strength lies in its flexibility\, and the reliance on the cumulative strength of all the musicians\, not just one musician calling the shots. Call it chamber music on steroids.

SUMMARY:Amythyst Kiah
DESCRIPTION:“One of Americana’s great up-and-coming secrets.”— Rolling Stone \n“She really is important in reminding people that there is a great tradition of African-American\, old-time musicians. I love that she sings in this really rich low vocal range\, just straight from the chest\, resonant.” — NPR \n“Her razor-sharp guitar picking alone guarantees her a place among masters\, but it’s her deep-hued voice that can change on a dime from brushed steel to melted toffee that commands attention.” — The New York Times \nAmythyst Kiah recently released her latest EP Pensive Pop (Rounder Records). With Pensive Pop\, Amythyst further illuminates how her artistic prowess cannot be defined in a single style. This 4-track release – which features her renditions of Tori Amos’ standard “Sugar\,” Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart\,” and Green Day’s “Hitchin’ A Ride” – highlights the iconoclastic alt-rock and hard-hitting\, diary-like songwriting that first sparked her artistic passion and shaped her musical palate. \nOn the EP\, Amythyst adds: “The songs on Pensive Pop were chosen before the title\, before any real concept came to light. Quite simply\, I chose songs that I love and wanted to see if I could keep their integrity while also matching a sound that’s authentic to me. I enjoy games and this process was like a puzzle. The common themes throughout this record address the lamenting external factors that can impede us on our journey in life and the struggle to accept and work through those challenges. Fear is at the center of all of these songs: fear of rejection\, fear of change\, fear of sobriety\, fear of living in the present. Pensive Pop is my reinterpretation of pop/rock songs in order to bring more attention to the stories being told.” \nThe tracks of Pensive Pop and of her 2021 Rounder Records debut Wary + Strange – which was lauded by The New York Times\, NPR Morning Edition\, Pitchfork\, Rolling Stone and more – are just a selection of her setlist for her U.S. and European tours this Summer and throughout the rest of the year. Kiah – who was recently named one of CMT’s Next Women of Country – just recently capped a run of shows with The Who and will be headed out on the road with CAM this year. \nKiah – a Grammy-nominated songwriter – was recently featured in Amazon Music’s For Love & Country documentary and one of the faces of Gibson’s Sister Rosetta Tharpe & Generation Acoustic campaigns. \nThe Rounder Records debut from Amythyst Kiah\, Wary + Strange marks the glorious collision of two vastly different worlds: the iconoclastic alt-rock that first sparked her musical passion\, and the roots/old-time-music scene where she’s found breakout success in recent years\, including recognition from Rolling Stone as “one of Americana’s great up-and-coming secrets.” Along with tapping into the vibrant musicality she honed in part through her studies in East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass\, Old Time\, Country Music program\, the Chattanooga-bred singer/songwriter expands on the uncompromising artistry she’s displayed as a member of Our Native Daughters—an all-women-of-color supergroup whose Kiah-penned standout “Black Myself” earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song of the Year at the Folk Alliance International Awards. \nProduced by Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers\, Amos Lee\, Andrew Bird) and made with esteemed musicians like Blake Mills\, Wary + Strange arrives as a deeply immersive body of work\, endlessly redefining the limits of roots music in its inventive rhythms and textures. With an unforgettable voice that’s both unfettered and exquisitely controlled\, Kiah gracefully interlaces political commentary and personal revelation\, ultimately offering a raw yet nuanced examination of grief\, alienation\, and the hard-won triumph of total self-acceptance. \nSponsored by TriMet. \n

SUMMARY:DakhaBrakha + THE FILM “EARTH"
DESCRIPTION:DakhaBrakha performing a live score to the silent film\, Earth by Alexander Dovzhenko. \nReturning to The Reser after an unforgettable concert in April\, DakhaBraka hails from Kyiv\, the now devastatingly war-torn capital city of Ukraine. With their multicultural traditional instrumentation\, theatrical costuming\, and the quartet’s astonishingly powerful vocal range\, they create a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian soil. They have built enormous critical acclaim and a large global fanbase. \nThis time DakhaBrakha provides the live musical score to a screening of the legendary 1930 Ukrainian silent film masterpiece\, “Earth.” Directed by Alexander Dovzhenko\, “Earth” is considered to be one of the most important films of the Soviet era. Dovzhenko is a master of composition\, and the film—with its intense close-ups and the impressive expanses of the landscape—is a passionate tribute to the countryside\, to nature\, and to the people that work on it. \n“Earth” was banned 9 days after it’s original release\, and was glorified in Ukraine only after Dovzhenko’s death in 1956. Full of lyrical pantheism and utopian exaltation\, it demonstrated the ambiguity of Ukrainian geopolitical choice in the 1920s. In 1958\, a film critics’ forum in Brussels named “Earth” one of the 12 best films in the history of world cinema. \n“Earth” captures a moment in time when traditional rural life in Ukraine was about to undergo massive upheaval as a result of overwhelming political forces. It was named one of the top 10 greatest films of all time by the International Film Critics Symposium. The Village Voice’s esteemed critic J. Hoberman has proclaimed\, “The astonishingly beautiful Earth is unlike anything else in movies” and Leonard Maltin called it “a lyrical\, deservedly famous classic.” It has been championed as one of the most important and controversial of the Soviet era\, with its intense close-ups and the impressive expanses of the landscape-a passionate tribute to the countryside\, to nature\, and to the people that work on it. As the group’s vocalist Marko Halanevych describes\, DakhaBrakha’s aim is to “create music with an ethnic message that makes the motion picture seem even more authentic and Ukrainian.” \nThe group had this to say about the creation of their soundtrack for “Earth”: \n“Making music for Alexander Dovzhenko’s “Earth” was a great honor for us and a difficult creative challenge. Frame by frame\, this Ukrainian masterpiece of world cinema impressed us every time we worked on it. No matter how we tried to work on the film as a self-contained artistic endeavor\, avoiding ideological evaluation\, we could not. Of course\, we voiced the film in the human terms of the 21st Century\, even while being aware that after 1930\, when the work was completed on “Earth”\, came the years of the Communist famine of 1932-1933\, the years of repression\, and we know about the difficult fate of the Dovzhenko socialist empire. Together\, we tried to convey the authenticity\, and also the naivety\, of those feelings and messages brought to us from that time and that era\, to us today and our Earth.” \nBUY TICKETS HERE \n

SUMMARY:DakhaBrakha
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Kyiv\, Ukraine\, DakhaBrakha reflects the fundamental elements of sound\, soul\, and “ethno-chaos” to create a world of unexpected new music. Accompanied by Indian\, Arabic\, African\, Russian\, and Australian traditional instrumentation\, this quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture and ethos. \n“The group mixes everything from punk-pop to traditional Ukrainian songs in cool yet beguiling textures\, often with the close harmonies usually associated with Balkan music. But it’s really the live shows that take DakhaBrakha beyond mere curiosity to utter brilliance.” — NPR \nThe name DakhaBrakha means “give/take” in Ukrainian\, and reflects their resilience and philosophy. Having experimented with Ukrainian folk music\, the band added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music to create their own unique and original style. \nFirmly rooted at the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater\, DakhaBrakha’s musical spectrum is both intimate and riotous\, plumbing the depths of traditional and contemporary roots and rhythms\, and inspiring “cultural and artistic liberation.” DakhaBrakha is a musical gift both unforgettable and rare.

SUMMARY:HIROMI : THE PIANO QUINTET ft. PUBLIQuartet
DESCRIPTION:PDX Jazz 2022 Fall Season \nEver since her debut release\, Another Mind\, Hiromi has electrified audiences with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz\, classical and pop\, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. \nOn her new album\, Silver Lining Suite\, Hiromi further exemplifies her virtuosic hybridity and emotional range\, finding strength and hope amidst the turmoil of the pandemic. \nBorn in Hamamatsu\, Japan in 1979\, Hiromi’s first piano teacher\, Noriko Hikida\, exposed Hiromi to jazz and introduced her to the great pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. She enrolled in the Yamaha School of Music and started writing music. \nHiromi moved to the United States in 1999 and studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Among her mentors was jazz bassist/arranger Richard Evans\, who took Hiromi’s demo to his friend\, the legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal. Evans co-produced Another Mind with Jamal. \nAnother Mind was a critical success in North America and Japan\, where the album shipped gold and received the Recording Industry Association of Japan’s Jazz Album of the Year Award. Hiromi’s astonishing debut was but a forecast of the shape of jazz to come. \nIn 2009\, she recorded with pianist Chick Corea on Duet\,a live recording of their concert in Tokyo. She also appeared on bassist Stanley Clarke’s Grammy-winning release\, Jazz in the Garden. \nIn the summer of 2021\, Hiromi performed at the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics. \n

SUMMARY:Pink Martini with China Forbes and Storm Large
DESCRIPTION:NEW SHOW JUST ADDED! \nSunday\, September 18\, 7:30 pm\nTickets onsale Monday\, August 29 \nIn 1994\, in his hometown of Portland\, Oregon\, Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics\, thinking he would run for mayor one day. Like other eager politicians-in-training\, he went to every political fundraiser under the sun… but was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming\, lackluster\, loud\, and un-neighborly. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world—crossing genres of classical\, jazz and old-fashioned pop—and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike\, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994. His aim? To provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers supporting causes such as civil rights\, affordable housing\, the environment\, libraries\, public broadcasting\, education\, and parks. \nOne year later\, Lauderdale called China Forbes\, a Harvard classmate living in New York City\, and asked her to join Pink Martini. They began to write songs together. Their first\, “Sympathique\,” was an overnight sensation in France and nominated for Song of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Awards. To this day\, it remains a mantra for striking workers: “Je ne veux pas travailler (I don’t want to work)”. \nPink Martini has sold well over 3 million albums worldwide on their own independent label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog). In 2016\, Pink Martini released its ninth studio album\, Je dis oui!\, which features vocals from China Forbes\, Storm Large\, Ari Shapiro\, fashion guru Ikram Goldman\, civil rights activist Kathleen Saadat\, and Rufus Wainwright. The album’s 15 tracks span eight languages (French\, Farsi\, Armenian\, Portuguese\, Arabic\, Turkish\, Xhosa and English)\, and affirm the band’s history of global inclusivity and collaborative spirit.  In 2019\, Pink Martini collaborated on a new release with the international singing sensation Meow Meow\, entitled Hotel Amour\, and also released two 5-song EPs\, Besame Mucho\, featuring regular guest singer Edna Vazquez\, and Tomorrow\, featuring regular guest singer Jimmie Herrod\, a finalist on 2021’s season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. During their pandemic hiatus\, the band released two new digital singles written by Thomas Lauderdale\, China Forbes\, and producer Jim Bianco\, “Let’s Be Friends\,” and “The Lemonade Song\,” which already has nearly 8 million streams on Spotify alone. \nFeaturing more than a dozen musicians\, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire throughout the world. Says Lauderdale\, “We’re very much an American band\, but we spend a lot of time abroad and therefore have the incredible diplomatic opportunity to represent a broader\, more inclusive America… the America which remains the most heterogeneously populated country in the world… composed of people of every country\, every language\, every religion.” \nThe band made its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony the following year. Since then\, Pink Martini has played with more than 50 orchestras internationally\, including Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Boston Pops\, National Symphony\, San Francisco Symphony\, Cleveland Orchestra\, and the BBC Concert Orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Other appearances include a performance at the official post-Oscars celebration Governors Ball\, four sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall\, the opening party of the remodeled Museum of Modern Art in New York\, multiple sellouts and a festival opening at Montreal Jazz Festival\, and multiple appearances\, including sellouts\, at the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. In its 20th year\, Pink Martini was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. In 2022\, the band is celebrating its 28th year of performing with its first full season of global touring since 2019\, due to the disruptions brought about by the pandemic. \nPerformances:\nFriday\, September 16\, 7:30 pm\nSaturday\, September 17\, 7:30 pm\nSunday\, September 18\, 3 pm\nSunday\, September 18\, 7:30 pm \nSponsored by The Reser Family Foundation\, Oregon State University Foundation\, and The Standard. \n

SUMMARY:Youth Concerts: The Portland Cello Project
DESCRIPTION:This concert is specifically geared to young people (recommended for ages 8 and up) and all minor attendees will need a supervising adult in attendance with them throughout the performance. \nThe Portland Cello Project is a nationally-recognized performing\, recording and educational group with a revolving cast of cellists. Cello Project (or PCP as their fans affectionately call them) have grown their following and now appear frequently around North America\, from punk rock clubs to symphony halls\, from street parties to exclusive private events. \nThe group developed a three-part philosophy that has mostly remained unchanged over the years: \nTo bring the cello places you wouldn’t normally see it (from wild dance parties\, to formal symphony halls\, to street parties\, to Millennium Park in Chicago…). \nTo perform music on the cello you wouldn’t normally associate with the instrument alongside music from the Western Classical Tradition (from Pantera to Taylor Swift to Kanye West to Elliott Smith\, alongside Bach\, Rossini\, and Saint-Saens\, to name just a few…). \nTo build bridges between different musical communities through educational\, community outreach\, and through collaboration with myriad artists\, from The Dandy Warhols to Garrison Keillor to Ural Thomas to Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) to Jolie Holland to Peter Yarrow (Peter\, Paul and Mary)\, among many others\, and cellists such as Ben Sollee\, Maya Beiser and Zoe Keating. \n“[PCP] concerts are purposely suitable for all demographics: boogie-ing grannies\, head nodding hipsters\, budding middle-school musicians and everyone in between because bringing everyone together in a spirit of collaboration only adds to the philosophy of diversity that PCP proudly upholds.” \nMusic Workshop’s Summer Soundwaves Series brings young people and their families to The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts\, for interactive performances with exciting and inspiring musicians.
