SUMMARY:International Guitar Night
DESCRIPTION:For the 24th annual tour\, Brian Gore has assembled a lineup of three IGN favorites and an exciting newcomer. LUCA STRICAGNOLI (Italy)\, the amazing acoustic rock interpreter\, will be returning for the 4th time. THU LE (Vietnam)\, whose nylon string artistry stretches from classical to contemporary) was on the IGN 2022 tour. MARCO PEREIRA (Brazil)\, the master composer and performer\, first toured with IGN in its early days and returns for his final go-round in 2024.  And MINNIE MARKS (Australia)\, the irrepressible blues slide guitarist and singer\, not only is new to IGN but will be making her North American debut. We are grateful and honored to present them all. \nLuca Stricagnoli\nWith his music videos exceeding 100 million views and bookings in every corner of the globe\, Luca Stricagnoli is considered one of the most interesting acoustic guitarists in the world. \nUsing up to five guitars in the same piece\, modified capos\, and self-conceived stratagems\, Luca continually leaves his audiences in awe and wondering what’s next for the up-and-coming guitarist. In addition to his musical abilities\, Luca brings an enthusiastic energy to the stage that makes him a true entertainer. \nHis latest invention\, a custom Triple Neck Guitar\, obtained once again a viral success with over 40 million views online. His performances with this instrument have been featured in magazines everywhere and even grabbed the attention of famous bands such as “Red Hot Chili Peppers”. Luca has played in more than 20 countries and in front of audiences up to 12\,000 people \nThu Le\nI am an International award-winning classical guitarist and certified guitar teacher. My love affair with the guitar began at the age of four thanks to my father\, Le Hanh\, At the age of five I gave my first public performance in Vietnam under his tutorship. I passed the entrance examination for the National Conservatory of Music\, Hanoi at the age of only seven\, making me the youngest ever student to be admitted to this prestigious establishment. To further enhance and develop my talent\, I took master classes with world-renowned guitarists such as Manuel Barrueco\, Nikita Koshkin\, Hubert Kaeppel\, Pavel Steidle\, Thomas Offermann\, Marcin Dylla\, Denis Azabagic\, Judicael Perroi\, and Gabriel Bianco. \nMy passion for guitar has seen me perform solo as well as hosting a series of successful master classes across several continents including North America\, UK and Europe\, the Middle East\, and Asia. And of course\, I stay close to my cultural roots performing regularly in Vietnam\, my beloved country of birth. \nIn 2018 I performed and held master classes at the prestigious Guitar Federation of America (GFA) convention held in Louisville\, USA. In addition\, I was a performing artist and jury member at the 2018 Alma Hanoi International Guitar Festival.  I also perform regularly at the famous Joaquin Rodrigo Guitar Festival in Spain and the renowned International Guitar Festival in Kolkata\, India. Besides my solo career\, I also collaborate and perform with orchestras\, string quartets\, vocalists\, violinists\, flutists\, and in guitar duo.  \nMarco Pereira\nMarco Pereira is an internationally renowned Brazilian composer\, guitarist\, and\nuniversity professor. He has performed and recorded with many top popular Brazilian singers/composers like Tom Jobim\, Milton Nascimento\, Edu Lobo\,\nPaulinho da Viola\, Gilberto Gil\, and Wagner Tiso. He has performed in North America on several occasions with International Guitar Night. He returns again for International Guitar Night XXIV in 2024. Marco was born in Sao Paulo and got classical guitar lessons with the Uruguayan master Isaias Sávio and music theory lessons at the Music and Drama Conservatory of São Paulo. He lived in France for five years and received a classical guitar master’s degree in performance from the Université Musicale Internationale of Paris\, and a master’s degree in Musicology from the University of Paris-Sorbonne with his thesis Hector Villa-Lobos and his guitar work (Editora Musimed – Brasília – Brasil). In Paris\, he was strongly influenced by jazz and Latin-American music which characterizes his compositional work\, in addition to Brazilian styles. He performed with great success at 9ème Festival de Jazz de Paris that allowed him to perform in Germany\, France\, Switzerland\, Denmark\, Italy\, Austria\, Canada\, and the United States. His compositions and playing have won awards in important international contests such as Spain’s Concurso Andrés Segóvia in Palma de Mallorca and Concurso Francisco Tárrega in Valencia. He has recorded over a dozen albums. In addition to performing internationally\, Marco is a professor in the Composition Department at the federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His compositions are published by Editions Lemoine\, Paris\, and GSP (Guitar Solo Publications)\, San Francisco\, and have been played and recorded by important guitarists all around the world. \nMinnie Marks\nMinnie Marks is not just some blazingly electrified guitar-playing freak of nature. She is also a rare and triple threat: Singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.    Relentlessly performing across the globe\, equipped with an old Goldtop in her hands and a revolutionary Farmer Foot Drum at her feet; Marks consistently pushes musical limits with her mind-blowing\, dynamic guitar wizardry and her insanely powerful voice\, that roars out her truth through song as if her own life depended on it. And\, if that’s not enough\, she simultaneously\, creates bone marrow-shaking grooves with spare limbs on her Foot Drum kit. Finally\, all three beasts are married together to forge a mammoth-sized wall of sound. From winning the world-renowned ‘Bluesfest Busking Competition’ in 2011\, to taking out the People’s Choice Award’ at both Blues At Bridgetown and Nannup Music Festival\, plus earning the winning place of ‘Best Guitarist’ for the Open Arms Festival competition\, Marks is no stranger on the block. \nHere’s what a few master musicians have to say…. \n“Minnie Marks\, she plays guitar like nothing I’ve ever seen before\, she sings like\nJanis Joplin\, she’s going to blow the world apart.” – Kim Churchill \n“I’m shakin’ in my boots. One word\, PRODIGY!” – Sarah McLeod (The\nSuperjesus) \n“One of the finest young guitar players in the country” – Julz Parker (Hussy Hicks) \n“Damn\, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a female shred harder than you in the flesh” –\nDallas Frasca \nOver the past twelve years\, Marks has paved her musical journey around the world with three studio albums and one live album recorded in Stuttgart\, Germany. The award-winning troubadour shows no sign of slowing down. Her new twelve-track album will be out for release in 2022. In 2024\, Minnie will make her North American debut with International Guitar Night. \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:The Evolve Experience
DESCRIPTION:For two shows only\, The Reser and the Red Door Project present The Evolve Experience\, an award-winning series of monologues that inspire true dialogue. Afterward\, a chance to reflect together to deepen perspective and foster understanding. \nIt’s a simple\, powerful idea. See and hear real-life stories from racially diverse police officers\, judges\, and community members. Emerge moved and prepared to evolve the conversation about race and justice. \n\nDirected by Co-Founder and Artistic Director\, Kevin Jones\, The Evolve Experience makes a compelling statement about the complexity of racial profiling from a wide variety of perspectives. “Through the telling and hearing of stories\, we can understand\, and perhaps even appreciate\, the similarities in who we are\,” says Jones. “We don’t have to like or even agree with what we hear\, but through our common humanity we will build the world we want to live in\, and that begins with listening.”\n\nHands Up: 7 Playwrights\, 7 Testaments premiered in 2016\, commissioned by The New BlackFest in the wake of police shootings of Mike Brown in Ferguson and John Crawford III in Beavercreek\, among many others. The Red Door Project created Cop Out: Beyond Black\, White & Blue in 2018\, which reflects the complicated personal and professional experiences of police officers in our country today\, based on interviews with law enforcement personnel.\n\nThe Evolve Experience includes monologues from both Hands Up and Cop Out alongside newly added judicial monologues commissioned by the National Center for State Courts. The goal is to stimulate conversation and equip participants with the self-awareness necessary to help overcome this seemingly intractable divide.\n\nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:The Triplets of Belleville w/ a live score by Benoit Charest
DESCRIPTION:The Triplets of Belleville Cine-Concert\nBenoit Charest\, Composer-Conductor \nIn 2003\, the animated French feature The Triplets of Belleville swept the globe\, raking up dozens of awards and nominations—not to mention the hearts of countless admirers—along the way. Much of it came down to the Oscar-nominated score by Benoit Charest\, which grabbed audiences by the ears and dragged them into the streets of 1920s Paris and Le Jazz Hot. Benoit is back; with Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville he recreates live the original score as the film itself is beamed onto the big screen. \nSaddle up for the misadventures of a kidnapped Tour de France cyclist\, his would-be rescuer grandmother\, and the titular trio of larger-than-life divas\, all accompanied by the speakeasy slick sounds of un orchestre sans pareil. \nFeaturing Le Terrible Orchestre de Belleville with composer Benoit Charest \nArts For All tickets are available. SUMMARY:Beethoven Mass in C\, Op. 86
DESCRIPTION:Choral Arts Ensemble welcomes the Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra for a special performance of Beethoven’s colossal Mass in C major. Inhabiting the dramatic world of the symphony\, this beautiful Mass is one of the most significant works in the choral repertoire. \nWhile often overshadowed by his subsequent Missa Solemnis\, this “long-underrated masterpiece” is the first of Beethoven’s two masses and set the standard for Mass settings in the 19th century. Commissioned by Prince Nikolaus Esterházy II to celebrate his wife’s name-day in 1807\, Beethoven’s Mass in C contains some of the composer’s most sublime music for voices. \nThe Mass was written while Beethoven was composing another work in C … his Fifth Symphony. The resulting structure of the Mass is powerfully symphonic. With a combination of spirituality and humanity\, Beethoven treated the text and sentiments of the Mass as they had never been treated before. Anchored in the Haydn-Mozart style of Mass\, Beethoven goes beyond it\, adding to their grace a muscular strength\, a festive tone and the personal feel that distinguishes almost all of Beethoven’s music. The work’s grandeur\, power\, and spiritual depth make it an enduring masterpiece that continues to inspire and move audiences. \nCurrently celebrating its 55th season\, CAE is Portland’s choir\, both geographically and in spirit. We uphold our tradition of choral excellence\, sharing a passion for our art while having a little fun along the way. As one of the region’s premiere choral ensembles\, we continue our tradition of building community\, educating\, enriching\, and entertaining our audiences with exceptional performances of unique and diverse programming performed at the highest artistic level. We are singers who represent a variety of professional occupations and diverse singing experiences\, but we have all joined for a simple reason –passion – for music\, for our fellow singers and for our audiences. Through artistic excellence and creative collaboration\, we are committed to creating inspiring concert experiences. \nStudent tickets $5\, to purchase please contact The Reser Box Office – boxoffice@thereser.org\, (971) 501-7722.\nAdd 8 or more tickets to your cart for a 20% group discount on Standard tickets.

SUMMARY:Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Beaverton Symphony’s 40th anniversary by welcoming Music Director finalist Pierre Chevalier and violinist Nelly Kovalev for the Spring Concert. The program includes Rossini’s Overture from “The Italian in Algiers\,” the Glazunov Violin Concerto\, and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. The melancholic Glazunov Violin Concerto pairs beautifully with the unrestrained joy of Dvorak’s 8th Symphony. These tremendous pieces capture the transition from the end of winter to the beginning of spring. \nPierre-Alain Chevalier \nConductor and educator Pierre-Alain Chevalier has worn many hats in his career\, crossing the entire country while performing with numerous ensembles and teaching students of all ages. With a community-centered approach toward programming and performance\, Chevalier made a name for himself as music director of the Baytown Symphony Orchestra\, ultimately winning third in the American Prize in Orchestral Conducting in 2019 and Orchestra Performance in 2021. Chevalier is currently the Marketing and Administrative Coordinator for the renowned Oregon Repertory Singers in Portland. Dr. Chevalier holds degrees from the Moores School of Music (DMA)\, The Hartt School (MM) and Willamette University (BM). \nNelly Kovalev \nA magnetic violinist\, Nelly Kovalev shines in vibrant performances\, full of “thrilling life and deep feeling.” (San Francisco Classical Voice) With her bold approach and signature chic style\, Kovalev exudes warmth and vivacity\, both onstage and off. Her “precise\, yet effortless playing… [is] just plain gorgeous” (Oregon ArtsWatch) and translates equally well in front of the orchestra\, on movie soundtracks\, and in concert stadiums. Kovalev thrives across genres\, and is especially adept in pop and rock environments\, contributing high-caliber skills with star power. She has toured Asia and across Europe (including in her home country of Latvia)\, with performances in Radio City Music Hall\, The Kennedy Center\, Nokia Theater\, The Hollywood Bowl\, and most recently\, playing the national anthem to open a Trailblazers game at the Moda Center in Portland\, Oregon. Her session work includes scores for Frozen\, Renfield\, Outlander\, Ben Hur\, The Age of Adeline\, as well as Halo and Spider-Man video games\, and albums for Alesana\, Federale\, and Pink Martini. \n  \nPre-concert talk at 6:45 pm.

SUMMARY:“of Love” – A Personal Requiem
DESCRIPTION:How do we transform and transcend loss as we grieve? The violinist and composer Curtis Stewart spent four years caring for his cancer-stricken mother\, a composer and violinist herself. His latest album\, of Love.\, is a personal requiem and tender tribute to his mother’s memory. This concert brings together excerpts from Stewart’s album and Grieg’s buoyant yet nostalgic Holberg Suite\, and also features Missy Mazzoli’s gothic and shadowy violin concerto\, Dark with Excessive Bright. \nCurtis Stewart’s was hailed by The New York Times as “a giant…combining omnivory and brilliance.” A fierce advocate for other living composers\, Stewart was recently appointed artistic director of American Composers Orchestra. \nCurtis Stewart:  Selections from “of Love” \nGrieg:    Holberg Suite \nGesualdo: “Resta di darmi noia” (arr. SUMMARY:Pamyua
DESCRIPTION:Pamyua\, Alaska’s most famous Inuit band\, is bringing Indigenous culture and music to the forefront of entertainment. The group’s compelling performances blend traditional Inuit drum/dance melodies and songs of their ancestors with contemporary R&B and soul music\, often referred to as “tribal funk” or “Inuit soul.” The group’s performances honor and share indigenous Inuit cultural traditions and stories of their heritage through music and ceremony passed down through generations. \nPamyua showcases Inuit culture internationally through their music and dance concerts\, sharing their indigenous knowledge and history. Their unique style and sound derive from combining traditional melodies with contemporary vocalizations and instrumentation\, paired with traditional dances and the artful inclusion of symbolic\, native masks. \nFounded by brothers Phillip and Stephen Blanchett\, Pamyua includes Ossie Kairaiuak and frequent guest members. The band is proud to represent indigenous culture\, and believes music and dance create unity. Together\, each member masterfully interprets the Inuit traditions with joy and sincerity. The response to their message is tremendous and the group is a symbol of pride for Alaska’s indigenous people and all who see them perform. \nPamyua’s music and videos are now part of the Library of Congress’ permanent video archive in its American Folklife Center. The Library recently commissioned the group to provide a music video for their special “Homegrown Concert Series.” The concert video and oral history of the group are now permanently accessible to the public online to view anytime for free. \nPamyua is also busy bringing the indigenous sounds of Alaska to television. They made two special appearances performing their original music live on ABC-TV’s recent hit series “Alaska Daily\,” starring Oscar winner Hilary Swank. They scored original music and songs for multiple episodes of Nat Geo’s Emmy-winning docuseries “Life Below Zero: First Alaskans\,” and were asked by the BBC to provide more music for the popular show. The weekly series follows new Alaska Natives as they try to thrive and survive the challenges of today’s climate change in the brutal Alaskan environments\, using the techniques and methods passed down from prior generations. For more information on “Life Below Zero: First Alaskans\,” please visit the press site page. The group also performed and co-wrote the theme to the popular PBS children’s show Molly of Denali and composed original music for Discovery Channel’s Flying Wild Alaska. \nThis Fall\, Pamyua made their debut concert appearance at the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and headlined the first L.A. SUMMARY:Chris Thile
DESCRIPTION:MacArthur Fellow and Grammy Award-winning mandolinist\, singer\, songwriter Chris Thile\, who the Guardian calls “that rare being: an all-round musician who can settle into any style\, from bluegrass to classical\,” and NPR calls a “genre-defying musical genius\,” is a founding member of the critically acclaimed bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek. For four years\, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook\, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike\, giving the listener “one joyous arc\, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty” (New York Times). \nMost recently\, Chris recorded Laysongs\, out June 4\, 2021\, on Nonesuch. The album is his first truly solo album: just Thile\, his voice\, and his mandolin\, on new recordings of six original songs and three covers\, all of which contextualize and banter with his ideas about spirituality. Recorded in a converted upstate New York church during the pandemic\, Laysongs’ centerpiece is the three-part “Salt (in the Wounds) of the Earth\,” which was inspired by C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters. The album also features a song Thile wrote about Dionysus; a performance of the fourth movement of Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin; “God Is Alive\, Magic Is Afoot” based on Buffy Sainte-Marie’s adaptation of a Leonard Cohen poem; a cover of bluegrass legend Hazel Dickens’ “Won’t You Come and Sing for Me\,” and “Ecclesiastes 2:24\,” original instrumental loosely modeled after the Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Partita for Solo Violin in E Major. \nArts For All tickets are available. Location and quantities may vary.\nPlease contact the box office for more information. SUMMARY:Rhiannon Giddens
DESCRIPTION:Sold Out!\nRhiannon Giddens has made a singular\, iconic career out of stretching her brand of folk music\, with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities\, into just about every field imaginable. A two-time GRAMMY Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning singer and instrumentalist\, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient\, and composer of opera\, ballet\, and film\, Giddens has centered her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased\, and advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art. As Pitchfork once said\, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration”—a journey that has led to NPR naming her one of its 25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century and to American Songwriter calling her “one of the most important musical minds currently walking the planet.” \nFor her highly anticipated third solo studio album\, You’re The One\, out August 18 on Nonesuch Records\, she recruited producer Jack Splash (Kendrick Lamar\, Solange\, Alicia Keys\, Valerie June\, Tank and the Bangas) to help her bring this collection of songs that she’d written over the course of her career—her first album of all originals—to life at Criteria Recording Studios in Miami last November. Together with a band composed of Giddens’s closest musical collaborators from the past decade alongside Miami-based musicians from Splash’s own Rolodex\, and topped off with a horn section making an impressive ten- to twelve-person ensemble\, they drew from the folk music that Giddens knows so deeply and its pop descendants. \nYou’re the One features electric and upright bass\, conga\, Cajun and piano accordions\, guitars\, a Western string section\, and Miami horns\, among other instruments. “I hope that people just hear American music\,” Giddens says. “Blues\, jazz\, Cajun\, country\, gospel\, and rock—it’s all there. I like to be where it meets organically.” \nGiddens also is exploring other mediums and creative possibilities just as actively as she has American musical history. With 1858 replica minstrel banjo in hand\, she wrote the opera Omar with film composer Michael Abels (Get Out\, Us\, Nope) and\, with her partner Francesco Turrisi\, she wrote and performed the music for Black Lucy and the Bard\, which was recorded for PBS’ Great Performances; she has appeared on the ABC hit drama Nashville and throughout Ken Burns’ Country Music series\, also on PBS. Giddens has published children’s books and written and performed music for the soundtrack of Red Dead Redemption II\, one of the best-selling video games of all time. She sang for the Obamas at the White House; is a three-time NPR Tiny Desk Concert alum; and hosts her own show on PBS\, My Music with Rhiannon Giddens\, as well as the Aria Code podcast\, which is produced by New York City’s NPR affiliate station WQXR. \n \nIn the news: \n2023 Pulitzer Prize Winner in Music for Omar \nRead the Smithsonian Magazine‘s feature on Rhiannon Giddens \nRead the Time Magazine feature on Rhiannon Giddens and the Songs of Our Native Daughters project \nRecipient of a 2017 MacArthur Genius Grant \n  \nSponsored by Ronni Lacroute

SUMMARY:Finding Light
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Repertory Singers and Youth Choir join with Portland Youth Philharmonic for a profound reflection on life\, meaning\, and the search for light in the darkest of times with two stunning works for choir and orchestra. \nOregon Repertory Singers concludes their 50th season with Finding Light\, a new work for choir and orchestra by Filipino-American composer Matthew Lyon Hazzard. ORS commissioned Hazzard to write a complement to Lux Aeterna\, commonly considered the most beautiful twentieth-century work for choir and orchestra\, composed by National Medal of Arts winner and beloved Oregonian composer Morten Lauridsen. While Lauridsen’s oratorio approaches the theme of light from a religious perspective\, Hazzard’s new work is the ideal companion piece to conclude the concert\, with poems by young Chinese-American (and Portlandian!) poet Sophia Mautz about finding light in the darkest of times. Camerata from Portland Youth Philharmonic—celebrating their 100th Anniversary—is collaborating on this performance\, along with members of ORS Youth Choir—celebrating 30 years this season! It’s a season of milestones! Join us for this celebration of light\, life\, and longevity!
