SUMMARY:American Strings: Eliades Ochoa
DESCRIPTION:One of the most renowned Cuban soneros of all time\, a notable defender of traditional Cuban music\, and a legendary guitarist and tresero of his generation\, Eliades Ochoa joins American Strings host Kelly Bosworth for a one-on-one conversation before playing a full set with his band. \nCome hear how Ochoa\, alongside Compay Segundo and the veteran musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club\, inspired a global craze playing traditional songs that pay homage to the Spanish and African roots of Cuban music. And yes\, you can expect to see this legendary\, multi-Grammy-winning champion of the Son Cubano wearing his signature cowboy hat. \nEliades Ochoa was born in Santiago de Cuba on June 22\, 1946\, in Songo la Maya\, Santiago de Cuba. Eliades is considered one of the most renowned Cuban “soneros” of all time\, a notable defender of traditional Cuban music\, and the best guitarist of his generation. His distinctive cowboy hat and his penchant for wearing black have led some to call him “The Cuban Johnny Cash.” \nFrom a very young age\, he began to play the guitar with his parents of peasant origin as teachers and in a self-taught way. He alternated with itinerant troubadours from a very young age. In his walks through “guateques\,” bars\, and “zonas de tolerancia\,” he began to learn the vast traditional repertoire of Cuban music\, of which he is a teacher today. His musical style is due to his place of origin\, the Cuban countryside\, the anecdotes he listened to\, the “guateques campesinos\,” and a series of other elements that marked him and made him the artist he is today. \nNow in its seventh year\, PRAx and the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University present American Strings\, a series of conversations and intimate performances with iconic musicians from the Americas whose perspectives shape our world. Prior guests have included Keb’ Mo’\, Rosanne Cash\, esperanza spalding\, and many more. \nHosted by ethnomusicologist and public historian Kelly Bosworth\, American Strings performances offer audiences the chance to hear artists play and reflect on their practice. In conversation\, artists discuss process\, biography\, and the themes of their work. Conversation is followed by musical performance. Guests typically perform unaccompanied\, but in select cases may appear with their ensembles. \nDr. Kelly Bosworth is Mary Jones and Thomas Hart Horning Assistant Professor of Public History and Ethnomusicology at Oregon State University\, where she teaches courses such as “Social Change and American Popular Music” and “Musical Worlds of the Pacific Northwest.”She works at the intersection of sound\, place\, and belonging. Her research on music/sound/noisein U.S. history delves into the diverse archives of musicmaking\, reconstructing often-silenced histories through the songs and sounds associated with place. Her PhD dissertation (Indiana University\, 2024) explored “The Music of Miracle City: Vanport\, Oregon and the Sonic Imaginaries of Multiracial Democracy.” \nSponsored by John and Kate Stirek

SUMMARY:Camerata Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Camerata PYP closes its season with a program that blends elegance\, lyricism\, and a spotlight on seldom-heard voices in classical music. Featuring clarinetist David Hattner and conductor Huw Edwards\, this spring performance highlights a range of musical styles from the 18th to the 20th century. The evening opens with William Boyce’s Symphony No. 2 in A Major\, a celebratory and refined work originally composed for Ode for the King’s Birthday. Boyce’s symphony offers a glimpse into the grandeur and charm of English Baroque music. Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings in E minor follows a beloved staple of the string orchestra repertoire. This three-movement work is introspective and warm\, with Elgar’s characteristic sensitivity to line and texture. It remains one of the composer’s most enduring early successes. \nThe first half concludes with a rare performance of Ruth Gipps’ Clarinet Concerto\, Op. 9\, with David Hattner as soloist. Composed in 1940\, this lyrical and expressive piece is filled with unexpected turns and finely crafted orchestration. Gipps\, a 20th-century British composer and conductor\, is gaining renewed attention for her contributions to the repertoire\, and this performance marks a meaningful addition to Camerata PYP’s season. \nAfter intermission\, the orchestra returns with Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor\, K. 550\, one of the most frequently performed symphonies in the classical canon. Darker in tone than many of Mozart’s other works\, this symphony is tightly structured and emotionally charged\, offering a dramatic and satisfying conclusion to the program. \nThis concert is an ideal introduction to classical music for new audiences while offering depth and discovery for long-time concertgoers. Join us for a dynamic evening of music at The Reser\, presented by Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Camerata ensemble.

On this night\, they step into the spotlight to reflect\, to reckon\, and to share their truths—inviting us to listen deeply\, find common ground\, and remember that our shared humanity is stronger than our differences. \nThe evening culminates in a world premiere performance by Talilo Marfil\, 2026 Fields Artist Fellow. Created exclusively for I Am An American Live\, this original musical set traces Talilo’s own arduous journey—shaped by the streets of Portland—and the path that led him to become a powerful force uplifting and mentoring the city’s youth. \nNow in its fifth year\, this acclaimed live production brings the voices of Asian Americans to the stage in a dynamic fusion of storytelling\, music\, and performance. The result is an evening that moves the heart\, challenges assumptions\, and reminds us who we are—together. \nThis free performance is made possible through the generous support of Anne Naito-Campbell. Additional programming support is provided by the Ronald W. Naito\, MD Foundation and a grant from the Richard B. Siegel Foundation. \nJoin Us for a Special Pre-Event Happy Hour! \nCome early and celebrate our stories with drinks and great company. Drinks and light snacks will be available for purchase. \nMeet Elizabeth Mehren\, author of I Lived to Tell the World—purchase a copy of her award-winning book and have it signed. \nConnect with our partner nonprofits sharing stories and resources about the immigrant experience. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to mingle\, learn\, and celebrate together before the main event begins. \nThe auditorium opens at 6:30 PM. \nContent Advisory:\nSome stories shared during this event include references to trauma\, drug use\, and self-harm. SUMMARY:National Geographic Live: Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:Communities across the world are experimenting with new ways to live in the midst of a global climate crisis and persistent environmental change. Filmmaker\, anthropologist\, and National Geographic Explorer Alizé Carrère guides a journey to the floating gardens of Bangladesh\, the ice pyramids of India\, and the latest menu items (invasive species) at U.S. restaurants. At the heart of these stories is a mindset everyone can learn from: when our approaches harmonize with nature\, transformational solutions emerge. \nAlizé Carrère is a filmmaker and anthropologist who documents human adaptations to environmental change. After starting with projects related to agriculture\, her work evolved into broader storytelling and education about human resilience. She brings her social science background and extensive field experience to her filmmaking\, with the goal of elevating the human dimensions of climate change. She is currently pursuing her doctorate at the University of Miami where she is examining the relationship between architecture\, climate change\, and ecological urban utopias. \nSponsored by Bank of America.

SUMMARY:Rearview Mirror
DESCRIPTION:In a world that moves at a crazy pace\, we often rush forward\, barely pausing to reflect on what has brought us to this moment. The Portland Sage Singers have traversed many miles in our lives\, and we love the songs that have accompanied us through both the joys and sorrows of growing into elderhood. \nRearview Mirror gives us the perfect platform to look at decades gone by…specifically the ones in which Sage Singers were born: the 40’s\, 50’s\, and 60’s! We are paying homage to that soundtrack of our early years. We’ll be taking you from Tuxedo Junction to Jailhouse Rock and If I Had a Hammer! \nFun music\, such as “Tuxedo Junction\,” “The Peppermint Twist\,” and “”Hair” kept things lively even in difficult times of unrest in our country. This was reflected in powerful protest songs that are still front and center today\, from Woodie Guthrie to Pete Seeger. \nSprinkled in will be songs we would share with our younger selves if we could as well as what we would like to tell the next generation about what we’ve learned. \nYou’ll want to sing along\, no doubt. While some memories may feel distant\, our musical rearview mirror reveals that “objects are closer than they appear.” \n*Public on-sale begins April 7th.

SUMMARY:The OBT Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our season’s grand finale is a trove of discovery—a collection of bold West Coast voices pushing ballet into uncharted territory. San Francisco Ballet’s Davide Occhipinti bends light into motion\, while OBT’s own Lauren Flower crafts movement that lingers in the mind long after the curtain falls. Dani Rowe embarks on a new choreographic journey\, sparked by the restless\, searching energy of a “beehive”—a world buzzing with movement\, thought\, and transformation. And\, as always\, The OBT Collection holds one last surprise—an unexpected gem\, unearthed from 2025’s OBT by Design. These are the ballets you haven’t seen yet but won’t forget. Be there when they emerge. \nPhoto credit: Hannah Davis by Christopher Peddecord

SUMMARY:Echoes of Life
DESCRIPTION:An evening of contrast\, beauty\, and reflection\, Echoes of Life brings together the brilliance of classical ballet and the searching voice of contemporary creation.\nThe program opens with Paquita (Act III)\, a dazzling celebration of classical ballet technique and virtuosity. Rooted in the grand tradition of 19th-century ballet\, this iconic work showcases precision\, elegance\, and the radiant unity of the ensemble\, embodying the enduring spirit and discipline of classical Ballet. \nIn contrast\, Ye Li’s new contemporary Ballet work Can You See? offers an introspective and deeply human exploration of light—not only as a physical presence\, but as a metaphor for awareness\, compassion\, and our shared humanity. The work traces both an inner and collective journey\, searching for meaning\, identity\, and the quiet moments that define what it is to be human. \nAt its core lies a simple yet profound question: can we truly see one another? Through evolving movement and shifting relationships\, the piece reflects the fragile yet powerful connections that bind us. It invites us to pause\, to look closer\, and to recognise the unseen impact of our actions—how even the smallest gesture of kindness can illuminate another’s life. \nTogether\, these two works form a dialogue between past and present\, form and feeling\, clarity and ambiguity. Echoes of Life celebrates not only the evolution of ballet\, but also the shared human experience—where tradition meets transformation\, where connection takes shape\, and where every movement leaves a lasting echo. \nPhoto by Jingzi Zhao \n*Ticket prices increase May 1st
