ONN launches the season with a vibrant exploration of musical wit and transformation across time. Portland’s own Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw opens the program with Entr’acte, a work inspired by the elegant and surprising turns of Haydn’s string quartets. Next, Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury draws from the same Haydn source and Shakespeare’s Macbeth, weaving together visceral energy and literary allusions in a thrilling orchestral experience. At the center is Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 60, Il Distratto—a work originally written for the stage, brimming with invention, charm, and comedic brilliance. This imaginative program forms a rich dialogue between past and present, showcasing how composers reimagine the concert experience through daring and wit.
