Mary Chomenko Hinckley is a Portland-based artist who works in diverse media, including bronze, resin, glass and photography. The juxtaposition between humankind and the natural world is an ongoing theme, and in recent years, her signature work is the coyote. The art installation spans 5 feet by 3 feet.
“As a first generation Ukrainian American, I identify with the coyote as a survivor,” said Chomenko Hinckley. “I saw the struggle of my WWII immigrant parents and admired their tenacious work ethic, gratitude, and desire to belong in our great country. I see art as a way of expressing humanity and to have a voice where perhaps none is given. It is a way to make my observation and experience count, be shared and create connection.”
Beaverton Coyote was cast at Maiden Foundry in Sandy, Oregon. It was installed in August 2019 with support from the Beaverton Arts Program, Beaverton Arts Commission and Beaverton Arts Foundation.
