Don your cape and fangs and celebrate Halloween Eve with the classic 1931 film Dracula, starring Béla Lugosi, accompanied by a live performance of Philip Glass’s original score. Philip Glass Ensemble Music Director Michael Riesman leads Third Angle in this hypnotic soundtrack for string quartet and two grand pianos.
Although there have been numerous screen versions of Bram Stoker’s classic tale, none is more enduring than this 1931 original. Towering ominously among the shadows of the Carpathian Mountains, Castle Dracula strikes fear into the hearts of the Transylvanian villagers below. Bela Lugosi, starring as the screen’s most popular vampire Count Dracula, together with horror specialist Director Tod Browning, create the film’s eerie and chilling mood. Dracula remains a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time.
The original film was released with no musical soundtrack apart from a brief excerpt of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake used in the opening credits and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger during a scene at the opera. In 1998 Philip Glass was tasked with creating a new score for the re-release of the film which was premiered by the Kronos Quartet and Michael Riesman.
