Introduction to Persian Music: Discourse aims to introduce the basic principles of Persian music (Classical and folk music of Iran) through live demonstration of musical instruments, listening, examples, basic elements of modal, music theory, and visual illustrations. Students will have the opportunity to try their hand at playing some Persian musical instruments, explore various playing techniques, compare, and contrast with Western instruments, and closely examine methods for creating the variety of sound textures found in Persian music. Basic elements of rhythm, pitch, compositional forms, and music theory will be covered. Among the instruments featured in the course are Santoor (hammered dulcimer), Kamancheh (spiked fiddle), Tombak (goblet drum), Daf (frame drum), Setar (long-necked lute), Ney (reed flute), and violin.
